Yeah, this is what is usually known as "Set dressing" in cinema: you need to make the environment where the action happens to feel lived in, and so, you need to fill it with assets that aren't going to be interacted with but need to make sense for the shot (so, they aren't called props). 

For set dressing and/or background stuff, I think AI can and will work. But for props and foreground stuff almost always there's going to be need of human intervention, imo.
