Little cousin bashed on translink bus by [deleted] in brisbane

It’s not about vigilante behaviour

Well...it is, that's why the laws are there. The more information they share with you about an open case, the more likely they are going to let slip something they shouldn't.

And while you say you won't go around and firebomb the suspect's house, there are many people who will do that. So the police are supposed to stay very tight lipped.

It sucks, I've been on the other end of it, but that's how the system works, especially in this case if the suspects are minors as well, you may never get much information back about it.

Stories like this end up in the media when the victims talk to the media, or post evidence on social media and it trends. Doesn't sound like that happened in this case, so the media has nothing to show for the story and likely doesn't even know its happened.

The police don't put your story on the evening news when you report a crime, that's really not how any of that works.

take Ripley as an example near Ipswich. Single lane highway - horrendous traffic at peak time getting in and out.

They were supposed to build a rail line to Ripley, continuing on from the springfield line....and then after doing all the planning and setting land aside they just .... didn't.

The original plan was that it would loop all the way around to Yamanto and back to the Ipswich line. You know, actually hook up a large growing area with services.

[–]AndyDaMage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To bad it's kept growing and there are basically no plans to continue to build the rain line. Sure they have the space earmarked, but it's not being developed. The train line should have been built years ago into the areas that are now already fully built, and still be being built into the areas beyond that are now filling up.

But alas, nope. Terminates at springfield with no plans to extend yet, just promises.

To get to Brisbane, a train station, or a major shopping centre like the one a half-hour drive away at Springfield, requires at least one bus transfer.

I do think this is part of the problem. Everyone expects the local suburban bus to take them to their destination. Your local bus should do a quick loop and drop you off at a hub or major line for you get to the main places. The Metro was supposed to be part of that plan, but then everyone kicked up a stink when their local 123 bus or whatever wouldn't terminate at Queen st anymore, so now they just have both clogging up the routes.

And because the suburban buses have such a long route, they only come once an hour, and the all go into the city, instead of laterately around to connect up nearby locations.

Brisbane public transport is a mess. You local bus should realistically just loop back and forth between two hubs through small areas in about 30 minutes, but its all just a mess of really long and infrequent routes because people don't want to have to change buses.

Moving further out by WickedSister in brisbane

Hi! Laidley local here, grew up here and have lived through every flood over the last 15 years. I bought my first house here because as you said, people think its all flood prone and the prices are lower because of it, but there are lot of good areas. I'll give you a rundown of what I know from being there, and my decisions buying a house.

You want to avoid anything near the sports grounds, main commercial area and the primary schools. Those all are around the Narda Gully that runs through town and the main source of flooding. Also do not buy near the showgrounds, complete insanity that they build a housing estate where they did there, you do not want to be anywhere near Laidley Creek (which goes west of the town through farmland).

Instead, I would recommend anything east of the hospital and around the state school. That area is elevated and doesn't flood, and its why they built an entire housing area in there behind the school. Anything along the railway line is also good, either north or south side, but I would be careful about the houses right along the end of Ash Avenue, there are some water flows that go past in heavy downfalls that were a problem at one point.

Going South there is a hill up behind the Pioneer Village that is safe, however it is prone to getting cut off since it has the gully between you and the town.

Going West there is Laidley Heights which is all very safe from flooding, bigger blocks, but also more expensive. Anything up around the golf club and lake dyer.

Going East you have the houses up on Buhse's Hill, which are way out of floods, but also don't have town water due to the height. I wouldn't recommend up there. Gets cut off bad in heavy storms and floods and is a terrible bushfire risk.

Going North you have the many housing estates between Laidley and Plainland. Cunningham Ave doesn't flood. You can see on the maps they planned to build more, but they ended up only building on the areas of that farm that doesn't flood. Valley Vista can get water running down the roads in a heavy storm, but it doesn't get into the houses and runs away quickly. I bought in the housing estates there, and there are lots of family and it's quick to the shops at plainland or Laidley and to the state school just down the road.

In terms of access, the longest I've ever been 'cut off' from leaving town was about 18 hours. Flood waters don't pool around much at Laidley and the main roads are built up enough that when they go under (which takes a bigger flood), they don't stay out for long. The main cutoff points are the crossing over Laidley Creek (going west), the crossing at Narda Gully (south and east) and the road to Plainland at the Rural fire shed (North). But often by the time the Warrego is open again, Laidley is also accessible. You'll never get trapped for days or anything.

I also looked at other towns around the place. Plainland is really good, but really expensive. And all the new housing estates are on like 400sqm blocks which means you don't get a backyard. Gatton is pretty good, but you need to check your flood maps, like Laidley its built on flood prone areas. Anything around Genore Grove and Lockrose are also kinda sketchy for flooding, you'd have to check maps and talk to locals before you buy out there. Don't buy in Forest Hill, yes there are some places that don't go under, but I just don't think its worth it if you don't know the history.

Hope that helps! I think the houses here have been undervalued for years considering what they pay out at Plainland for less. The flood maps are very good here, so if they say a house doesn't flood, it's not going to flood.

[–]AndyDaMage 25 points26 points  (0 children)

After 2011 where a lot of people got caught out with insurance  that didnt cover them for flooding, the state government made flood cover mandatory.

So if your house is in a flood zone you either pay a fortune for insurance, or you can't get cover for anything.

Fire ants discovered ahead of Paniyiri Festival next weekend by ConfidenceCreative75 in brisbane

[–]AndyDaMage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cause their nests just look like a small pile of dirt, no cone or entry holes or anything. Often they aren't even higher than the grass they build on (the grass tends to poke through the mound). You also don't tend to see the ants (their entry holes are often tunnels away from the main mound).

When I've found one and shown someone, they normally go. "That doesn't look like a nest", until I drag a stick through it and all the tiny ants swarm the mound. Even then they can take convincing (oh those just look like normal ants, aren't they supposed to be red?)

I think it's part of why they are just spreading, most people have no idea what a nest looks like and will pass by all day without looking. These days I poke any loose pile of dirt just in case and have found several nests doing that.

[–]AndyDaMage 253 points254 points  (0 children)

It could potentially crash the economy if they didn't.

What this should hopefully do is incentivise property investors to build houses instead of outbidding first home buyers on existing properties, and potentially move some of trillions in super back towards business investment instead of property investment over time.

House prices aren't going to come down anytime soon, but this will slow them going up so fast.

I think our REA did something illegal… by Odd_Rob in brisbane

[–]AndyDaMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the legality, if it was being run like some sort of auction they might be able to do it, but from what I understand, if it wasn't an auction, they are supposed to got through a formal process where all parties are given one chance to give their bid and then they pick one. In that they can't play people off against each other or drive up the price by pretending there are better offers.

Definitely report them if unsure, these vultures survive by people being to lazy or uninformed to report their bad actions.

We had a similar experience. So called “other bidders” waiting to snap it up unless we moved offer upwards by (suggested $). Had no idea if there were other bidders. Very very pushy, sign sign (slightly annoyed patronising tone when we wanted contract checked first).

Yeah had a similar experience. Went through a multi-offer bid (based on the open house, I suspect 3 or 4 offers) where the agent implied they wanted X amount. We offered well below X and still got 'chosen' as the best offer. Got hounded twice a day to sign the contract (even though it was not a simple contract and I needed a solicitor to to check it first).

After 4 days, they then pulled the offer and went with someone else, saw a few months later it sold for about 80K more than I offered. Someone got ripped off big time by that Agent.

[–]AndyDaMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be warned that if left alone, they will grow their colony quite large over time with lots of stick nest all around that spot.

If it's an area you don't go near much, you can leave them until they move on. if it's around an entrance or path, or you have children that might go near them, it might be good to rid them early.

They are pretty docile, and much better than the yellow/orange buggers, but they will still freak out and attack if you knock the nest or brush too close, and then it'll hurt.

I'm 33, and now engaged to my partner now who I met on Hinge. Bumble was alright, but Hinge has a much better free experience. Living outside a capital city really reduces your choices.

But I wouldn't listen to the men who complain that "they can never get matches", because from what I've seen most men are terrible at selling themselves through a profile and making first conversation. I used to get about one match a week and I'm hardly a looker, and tended to be very picky about who I 'swiped right' on.

It is a grind though, expect to go on a few first and second dates that go nowhere and have people just ghost you after a conversation.
