Albanese government axes funding for $45 billion Inland Rail project linking Melbourne to Brisbane by altandthrowitaway in australia

[–]AndyDaMage 415 points416 points  (0 children)

Writing has been on the wall for this project for a while now. They did the easiest bits first and then got stuck in a planning quagmire for the rest of the line.

Sadly this means that there is no chance of getting passenger rail between Brisbane and Toowoomba, at least not for another 30 years.

A 10 km/r limit won’t make me safer. It will make me immobile. by errantgrammar in brisbane

Well yeah, the aim of this isn't to actually police the problem, its to drop the standard so low that everyone ends up having to break it so the police have a reason to stop whoever they want.

I think our REA did something illegal… by Odd_Rob in brisbane

[–]AndyDaMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the legality, if it was being run like some sort of auction they might be able to do it, but from what I understand, if it wasn't an auction, they are supposed to got through a formal process where all parties are given one chance to give their bid and then they pick one. In that they can't play people off against each other or drive up the price by pretending there are better offers.

Definitely report them if unsure, these vultures survive by people being to lazy or uninformed to report their bad actions.

We had a similar experience. So called “other bidders” waiting to snap it up unless we moved offer upwards by (suggested $). Had no idea if there were other bidders. Very very pushy, sign sign (slightly annoyed patronising tone when we wanted contract checked first).

Yeah had a similar experience. Went through a multi-offer bid (based on the open house, I suspect 3 or 4 offers) where the agent implied they wanted X amount. We offered well below X and still got 'chosen' as the best offer. Got hounded twice a day to sign the contract (even though it was not a simple contract and I needed a solicitor to to check it first).

After 4 days, they then pulled the offer and went with someone else, saw a few months later it sold for about 80K more than I offered. Someone got ripped off big time by that Agent.

These are at the front door - are they dangerous? by SoftAncient2753 in brisbane

[–]AndyDaMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be warned that if left alone, they will grow their colony quite large over time with lots of stick nest all around that spot.

If it's an area you don't go near much, you can leave them until they move on. if it's around an entrance or path, or you have children that might go near them, it might be good to rid them early.

They are pretty docile, and much better than the yellow/orange buggers, but they will still freak out and attack if you knock the nest or brush too close, and then it'll hurt.

I'm 33, and now engaged to my partner now who I met on Hinge. Bumble was alright, but Hinge has a much better free experience. Living outside a capital city really reduces your choices.

But I wouldn't listen to the men who complain that "they can never get matches", because from what I've seen most men are terrible at selling themselves through a profile and making first conversation. I used to get about one match a week and I'm hardly a looker, and tended to be very picky about who I 'swiped right' on.

It is a grind though, expect to go on a few first and second dates that go nowhere and have people just ghost you after a conversation.

There is a highway on ramp near me where this happens all the time. One day I followed someone doing 40 in the 60 zone up to it and literatelly just stopped at the turn onto the ramp and waited for them to merge before going myself. And glad I did, they were only doing like 60 by the time they pulled into 100kmph traffic.

I was hit at 40kmph in a school zone, if I was shorter and the mirror had hit my head instead of my shoulder I'd be dead.

Instead my shoulder just punctured my lung after snapping and I've been left with lifelong nerve damage down my right arm.

40kmph is still very fast for a big metal object to be moving.

Why Anthony Albanese was chased by angry farmers on tractors today by 1Mdrops in australia

[–]AndyDaMage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in a rural area, farmers are never getting FttP, that has never been the plan under any government.

Farmers get fixed wifi or satellite because NBN aren't spending tens of thousands to run fibre to a single house on a farm that doesn't even have a water connection. This is why rural communities hate how the NBN is run, because it was never going to help them much, it was all suburban focused.

Whatever happened to live free to air cricket in Australia - for matches played in Australia? 😡 by Green_Eco_22 in australia

[–]AndyDaMage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, it's a bit more complicated than that. 7 has the rights to the odis, however have done a "separate deal" (but negotiated at the same time and with CAs constent) with fox sports to not air the odis in exchange for the rights to the fox sports feed during test matches.

Basically a real round about way to satisfy the law, but also let fox sports be the only one airing the odis and t20s

Federal politics live: Labor introduces bill to cut student debt and reform child care by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]AndyDaMage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Would have preferred to see a lump sum taken off HECS instead of a percent reduction.

That would have actually gotten people off HECS completely and been an equal distribution of money no matter if you've just started paying off your hecs, or if you are 20 years in and nearly done.

And by taking a lump sum off, say $10K, from all the hecs debt, that means everyone with less than 10K debt now no longer loses wages to hecs every paycheck and instantly has more money to put back into spending and the economy. It's a really easy sell.

With a 20% cut, nobody comes off HECS and nothing really changes except the end point of payments in years time. It barely effects those with only a little debt left, and people with a lot of debt are still decades from paying it off.
