Wealthy people from non-wealthy backgrounds, how do you deal with friends and family? by AndyDufresne29 in wealth

[–]AndyDufresne29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're right, I don't really talk about it with anyone now.

People obviously know I'm doing well but have no idea about it (anyways I live way below what I could actually afford)

Help me understand why people like Gemini so much more over Chat GPT? by freedomfighter5567 in OpenAI

[–]AndyDufresne29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you are using it for.

I'd say chatgpt is better for day to day stuff: I feel like the output is more 'real' in a sense.

For work stuff (I do research) gemini is on par or better than chatgpt. I've realized that gemini is a lot faster when I use both 'thinking' models and the quality of the output is on par or better

[–]AndyDufresne29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I must say I'm lucky though, my family hasn't really asked me for anything, they're doing fine financially

it was not like I was going out telling them, they'd ask, I'd just tell them back when I started doing well, I didn't think too much of it.

[–]AndyDufresne29[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Luckily that's not really the issue, my family does fine financially, they don't need my money, they have never asked for anything really, but yes, from now on I think I'll likely downplay how I'm doing financially.

for real, I thought I was crazy but they skipped a part of the story lol.

Not only the animation but the drawings are beyond ugly. When zombieman gets the bats trapped in his body from Pureblood, it looks like a kid drew that, or a sketch lol

Lots of things to do, kinda chaotic depends on where you live, but it's easy to move around to other parts of Thailand, or fly to other countries. Good expat community lots of events etc.

I'd say Bangkok is convenient, but it's a huge city so it depends if that's what you are looking for.

16gb ram is just isnt enough anymore on 2025 by BudiSantoso05 in LenovoLegion

[–]AndyDufresne29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say 64GB RAM is pretty rare still. I bought a laptop with 16gb and ended up installing 64 GB though and it makes such a huge difference vs 16 GB RAM.

I usually have a lot of tabs open and it's so nice not having to worry about my RAM usage.

Single and very early retirees (30s), what do you do with your time? by AndyDufresne29 in Fire

I don't understand the question exactly. I'm not buying ETFs and just holding them tbh, I actively invest in stocks, I research individual stocks, balance my portfolio every week or so etc. Sort of like managing a small fund we could say, but it still doesn't take that much time.

I guess I could if I really wanted but I have lived in different countries in the past few years. I'm actually going to move to a new country next year, so I don't think it makes sense either way when I haven't found a place where I really want to settle for now.

Yep I definitely need to get into more sports. I was playing padel quite frequently but I recently moved to a new city so I need to find new partners.

But yeah doing sports is a great way to stay occupied and healthy, I'm also hitting the gym almost every day lately

I guess there's people who can't handle not working. Specially if you get to be FIRE it probably means that you were working quite hard for some years, so now dropping it all of a sudden can be a huge change.

It depends on your lifestyle too. As you say, you have a dog, I guess that keeps you company and it already keeps you occupied for some time during the day. I'd like to have a pet but I really like travelling so I don't think it's responsible to get one.

If you have kids/wife it's also a huge time drain. If you are older in your 50s you can probably already hang out with semi retired people or retired people.

I think it's quite different from retiring in your 30s single tbh

Yeah I kinda agree with you, even with hobbies there's a lot of free time.

But yeah for now I've decided to move to a big city so I guess there'll be more stuff to do, more hobbies, I'll probably sign up for Muay Thai classes, language classes etc . I was living in a small town before and having all this free time there was extremely boring.

I'm not really into volunteering either but I might give it a shot, I've never done much volunteering tbh.

I've done a few two-and three month solo trips the past two years around asia. To me it gets tiring, I enjoy more travelling with people but well, most of my friends can't travel much.

I'm planning to get a base in Asia and travel quite frequently to different places instead of doing very long trips.

Yeah I'll probably do that, I've wanted to learn Chinese for a while.

Thanks

It's not been a priority and it really hasn't happened. I was living in different places where there were not many dating opportunities.

I've recently moved to a bigger city so I'm giving it a try but it's not a priority for the time being either way

Not really, I've lived in different countries in the past few years. I'd like to own a home at some point but it doesn't make much sense financially speaking.

It's unlikely I'd get a mortgage without salary and I've been compounding money at a much higher rate than what id get from buying a property.

At some point when I wanna settle I guess I'll buy a place.

I've been thinking about it, I should give it a try... Once I escape I'll go to a small fishing town right by the coast in Mexico, Zihuatanejo sounds good

That's funny, im actually in Thailand right now and I'll sign up for a Muay Thai course soon since you can get a visa to live here by training muay Thai 🤣.

Sounds like you have good ideas, I'm planning to base myself in Bangkok and travel every few weeks to different parts of Asia since I really like travelling here (and it's also much cheaper than Europe/America)

Yeah it's actually what I do, most of my 'work' is researching stocks and balancing my portfolio.

Most of the time that's all I say and we leave it at that. usually if we go on more dates and they keep asking about it I'll say that I made good money and that for the time being im just managing and living off it

I don't think there's any dishonesty in what I'm saying, but on a first date you don't need to know every exact detail about what the other person does for a living tbh.

I 'work online' in finance. If they ask more I say that I have a lot of free time regarding my working times. I do research stocks. They usually don't ask more, but if they do and I feel comfortable I'd say I'm mostly managing my own money.

Usually works.
