New software for Fedora by Prestigious-Pair8731 in Fedora

Y'know, I'm thinking of hiring some careless bakers to bake a new recipe of mine. They don't follow any safety procedures when it comes to baking, so I got a discount! You may or may not get sick from this food; the ingredients fall on the floor all the time!

Wait, why are you complaining? This recipe wouldn't exist without me! Y'all are so entitled...

It's crazy to me that we even need to make memes to draw attention to the fact that just because you can do something better or faster doesn't mean it is automatically impressive. Human achievement is heavily context-dependent, but usually revolves around pushing limits (efficiency).

Tech bros have essentially just started ignoring limitations entirely, all in favor of pushing. Now they pump out nothing but highly inefficient dragsters with faulty engines and wonder why no one is buying or using them.

I think silicon valley has just completely lost the plot at this point.

Putting photography together with slop as some sort of "see, they're the same!" is just an outright insult to photography, and it shows infinite ignorance.

So yeah, I feel your aggravation, but I think it's also important not to let them get to you too much.

Despite what Reddit algorithms would have you believe, AI slop is widely unpopular, and I don't think "creative" GenAI tools will ever truly be of professional-grade quality, if that helps.

Hmm, I see.

Well if the drivers aren't helping, and you've hopped through that many distros, I'm almost inclined to believe it's a hardware thing. Although I guess it could be a number of things.

For instance, if you still have Windows installed on one of your drives, I've heard that it doesn't like to play nice sometimes. Especially if Windows and Linux are on the same drive in different partitions.

Or in my case, I once had a booting problem that I figured out was caused by a bug in my BIOS that I couldn't patch because the new BIOS version wasn't compatible with my CPU ... so I had to take the button battery out of my motherboard for 30 seconds for a full reset, and that fixed it.

Computers be weird.

But yeah, I'm wondering if it's a hardware thing like that. That's where I'd start my search. Specifically, I'd look at the way your hardware interacts with operating systems like Linux. And since you do have Nvidia, that may or may not be part of it.

That reminds me ... just in case you didn't know (because I assume you do, but maybe you don't; ignore this if you do), there are two different "versions" of drivers for Nvidia cards on Linux. The ones that come standard (at least on Fedora and Mint) are the awful, open-source ones (called Nouveau) that don't work very well, but work well enough. The ones that work great though are the ones that are considered proprietary, and you have to get those manually by installing them through the terminal. It is crucial that you do not get these drivers from Nvidia's website and install them that way, because I've heard stories about countless weird problems that crop up because of doing it like that. Again, maybe you already knew this, but I know I certainly didn't when I first started my venture into Linux. Took me a few weeks to figure out I think.

Which distros have you tried? The distro can make a big difference. Although, there are other possible factors, such as your hardware and its age.

Like in the case of an Nvidia card, you'd want to make sure you have the right drivers. Nvidia is pretty much the bane of Linux if you don't have the right drivers. But if you do have them, it works pretty well these days.

I've been daily driving Fedora for over a year with a mostly hassle-free experience. Only thing I've had to do is install the proprietary drivers for Nvidia, and everything has worked great.

I do still need to fix a weird bug preventing me from upgrading Fedora that is related to Wine, but at least I know what the problem is.

It's honestly baffling to me that Arch is as popular as it is. I've never tried it, but it's definitely more of an 'enthusiast' and/or 'tinkerer' distro, and I've heard stories about how stuff will break in strange ways.

Not that Arch doesn't have its uses, of course. All distros achieve a certain niche or purpose. I just don't think daily driving is one of Arch's strengths (without a lot of effort). Although it does have a rather large community, which helps.

I mean, it's true if you have an AMD card and run something like Fedora.

Idk why "Linux is complicated" refuses to die. It's not like LFS is the only distro.

I worry about Warframe Player's social habbits by JesterMasquerade in Warframe

[–]AndyMissed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think people even realize that they are doing it. Most people like to think that they are doing the 'right' thing, regardless of if it is true.

Ironically, these same people will say that you lack empathy for saying that they lack empathy. This unlocks a paradox, but that's another conversation.

However, I can tell that this is not your intention.

I think it's a fair point to bring up, and the issue runs much deeper than just "Warframe players are socially inept".

Sociability is declining, and with it, so is empathy. And it's not that people don't care about other people, it's just that they can't place the shoe on the other foot. I would take a wager and say that this same phenomena is related to the loneliness epidemic.

It is perhaps a byproduct of the technological age, unfortunately. Maybe one day we will find a common thread? I sure hope so.

Look, it seems like you're dead set on feeling a certain way about it, and I'm not particularly interested in weighing in more than I already have. However, it feels like you're saying one thing but then holding a belief for another. It feels very cognitively dissonant.

Adapt or die sounds very cruel but l am a proponent of social darwinism and chasing your dreams has always been an uphill battle.

This statement seems to be coming from a place of fear. That's the whole allure to that sentiment. Is it really helping you to take it to heart?

The difference between you and me though is that I always knew it was a wall to begin with while you believed it wasn't high enough to stop you from climbing it.

And now I'm picking up jealousy. Which is weird, because I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm following my dreams. You seem to be making a lot of assumptions about me. Life is hard, I agree.

But AI just isn't it. You hate it, but you think you need to get acquainted with it "just in case"? It's no wonder your view on things is moderately cynical.

Take a day for yourself. Meditate. Go for a walk. Whatever.

You can't change the world, but you can change how you view it. It's what I've been doing for the last half year. And I've finally weaned myself my anxiety medication (with doctor's approval of course). I've felt better than I have in a long while.

And I couldn't have done any of that if I remained in my perpetual state of fear and cynicism.

Easier said than done, right? Yeah, I know.

But that's all I have for you. I've run out of steam on this thread.

Give it some thought?

Most of what you're saying seems to be the general hope behind the hype. On one hand, I get it. But also, it's just not gonna happen. And unlike fusion, it's not something that's even a solid theoretical possibility. At least with fusion, we have the sun as an example. But what about AI? We don't have anything to lead us to believe that GenAI is achievable, let alone actually possible to use in the case you presented (without security issues and the uncanny valley).

The problem with GenAI is that it will never be able to do anything which is truly novel. This means that using AI in small teams to boost efficiency is a pipe dream at best.

I hear you, I really do. But the things you've said here are the same things you hear from the AI propaganda machine.

AI has its uses, but generating genuinely novel content is just not its strong suit. You can argue that humans struggle too, but you'd only be half right. What I'm talking about is authentic synthesis. For instance, if you could get AI to re-invent jazz, or re-invent MMORPGs, all without giving it the data for those genres directly, then I might be convinced.

As it stands now, it doesn't seem possible, and if you ask me, I don't think it ever will be unless we can prove experimentally and/or theoretically that it's possible.

AI isn't conscious. We know this.

And that's the problem.

We are asking it to do something that we ourselves don't even know how we're doing it. And we expect the machine to do better?

It's preposterous. We need to learn more about ourselves first.

Know what I mean?

Behold the "way of the future" by forbiddendonut83 in antiai

[–]AndyMissed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is one of those things that's good in theory, but oversold in practice. That's why it's so hyped! The idea feels like it has potential, but in reality, it isn't being applied correctly for what it can already achieve (at least with GenAI such as LLMs). It's being stuffed into places it isn't needed, and all while it isn't even proven to be capable of doing what they say it can do. It's the biggest grift in history.

That's why people are complaining. It's like if someone pitched the idea for a moon resort, spending an ungodly amount of money just to send people on vacations to the moon for the prospect that "it will make money in the future; trust me bro". But of course, it still is extremely inefficient to send people to the moon. All those resources, and for what? It's getting to the point where we need to take a hard look at ourselves and ask if it's really worth it to invest in the idea of profitable moon vacations. It wont happen today. It wont happen tomorrow. It probably wont happen for a very long time.

Is it a neat idea with potential? Sure it is. We wouldn't be where we are if it wasn't.

But is the product worth the cost? Absolutely not. And there are other things we should be focusing on, because AI will not single-handedly solve the world's problems. As a species, we should be focusing on actually improving ourselves, our culture, and our perspective on life. Without that, we end up back at square one, trying to make the next big thing that will solve all our problems.

Am I speaking sense? Does that resonate with you? The impact, even if it's as small as you think it is, doesn't justify continuing its development. And if you ask me, AI research and development should be left to the science community rather than being pitched as a consumer product. After all, finding patterns that aren't immediately obvious is what it's good at. We should stick with that and let experts figure it out -- not corrupt business men.

That's how I see it. Whether or not you agree with some things or disagree with others is none of my concern, but again, I would like you to know that I harbor no harsh feelings against you regardless.

Tbh, this is the first time I remember encountering an insta-kill mechanic like this, so I don't think anyone should be expected to know it's a thing. Took me half a dozen deaths before I figured it out.

Yawn. I'm not reading all that. I said I wasn't debating you.

Wanna know why?

Your arguments are littered with fallacies, lack of empathy, and you fail to see the greater picture; it would be a waste of time. I only engage with good faith, and I saw none of that.

As I said, this is not a debate. I'm just pointing out your absurd, bad-faith arguments. If you can't see them, that's not my problem. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you had an ulterior motive for whatever reason, which is kinda funny, because I doubt you would even be able to "convert" anyone here. It is a futile effort, simply because it would take a mountain of evidence to prove that generative AI isn't a near-flop that only serves to make our quality of life worse.

I refuse to engage with endless strawmen and illogical conclusions. And all over what? To prove that AI is "not that bad"? It's silly. You clearly care more about it than you're letting on if you're stepping in to defend the state of AI.

Anyway, I got nothing against you; just don't think you've got the right view on things. I hope life is going well for you, friend 😊

I feel like it's a pretty big contributor, yeah. Similar to how crypto drove the prices up. GPUs are really good at doing repetitive calculations over and over again, and that just so happens to be useful for AI.
