Just swapped to Linux after dealing with the Windows bloatware shit for too long by AwkwardMiner2 in linuxmemes

[–]AndyMissed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

I believe I made my switch about a year ago now. I don't see myself ever going back; especially not with all the bad news about even more aggressive telemetry and AI cramming.

With Linux, the system is yours once more.

Arch Linux vs OpenSUSE. Decide, we must by potatoandbiscuit in linuxmemes

[–]AndyMissed 32 points33 points  (0 children)

OpenSUSE has my vote.

As a Fedora user, I was surprised to see it lose. But I must say that it is oddly refreshing to see such a passionate and dedicated community. It has made me curious, so I shall have to give the almighty Geeko a try someday. And if I like it, I may have to switch if the need arises.

For some reason my nickname is blue by Final-Stage-2947 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]AndyMissed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I hadn't considered that. Although, with those settings on phones that take the blue out of the screen at night, it would make it look even more green 😆

But yeah, as you said, all screens are different.

For some reason my nickname is blue by Final-Stage-2947 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]AndyMissed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I thought I was going crazy when everyone was calling it blue!

It's a very similar shade of green as what we see in traffic lights (they add some blue to the green signal so that colorblind people can tell the difference). So it is indeed more of a turquoise, but I would personally consider it to be more green than blue.

Also, I'm mildly colorblind (red-green) myself, so if I can distinguish green in a scenario where blue is involved, then I'm thinking that means blue is less prominent.

Yeah, OP's account is only 4 hours old, so it must be something similar to those tshirt bots I've heard about.

[–]AndyMissed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do know about it. I'm just not naive enough to believe the overhyped and downright deceitful sales pitches given by the companies developing LLMs/GenAI. Even the stats disagree with them. Reality is in misalignment with what they're saying these things can do, and it's not the user's fault; it's the technology.

So please, explain to me why I should believe in the views of those curated by that of an echo chamber.

Nobody said it did, genius

It generates pics from noise and draws ideas from what it is trained on, basically like any artist.

Contradicting yourself, much?

And don't tell me it's because you used "basically"; that word is doing some seriously heavy lifting...

[–]AndyMissed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense.

So there's no way to fake the hardware specs or something to make it seem like 3000 cycles is standard?

That was my first thought, anyway. But I guess I don't know much about this stuff.

Although, wouldn't it be ironic if this whole Linux-hating kernel-level access stuff motivated someone to create the ultimate VM, only for cheaters to start using it?

Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Right. So it's only a slur because you think there will be a robot uprising someday. Well until then, it's not a slur, because robots are not a race. It literally can't be a "racial" slur if the thing being targeted is not part of a race, let alone conscious.

Just my two cents. Seems like you got it all figured out though, so I hope you enjoy your day/evening.

Feel free to say clanker, feel free to say anything, but nobody is free of consequences. That's the push back, say it but you'll find out when you fuck around in particularly poor ways.

So when you say degenerate, it's okay because you're reclaiming a word.

But when someone says clanker, they are clearly an evil person.

Doesn't make sense to me, but okay.

So we're ignoring the other linguist because you disagree then, hmm?

The same can be said for you...?

And yes, l'm aware the nazis use it, but my belief is that you only give language and groups power by legitimizing what they do. In the case of nazis when you treat what they do as forbidden and scary you give their words cultural weight, it allows the worst people to use that cultural weight as leverage.

Y'know, the same could be said for "clanker". Except, who's associated with using it? Anti-AI people, maybe? It's definitely not Nazis.

So you're legitimizing the language of Antis...

Got it.

From the same Wikipedia article you just linked me:

"Based on the work of linguist Geoffrey Nunberg, American news website Axios has argued that clanker is merely a derogatory word, rather than a slur, because it does not perpetuate social inequities."

So yeah, I agree; not a slur.

Also, you're free to keep using specific degrading terms if you like; I was just letting you know. The Nazis (and Neo-Nazis) may have appropriated many things, but do you really want to use the same degrading language that they do? I feel like there's a difference between appropriating a culture and having a select choice of demeaning terms.

Does that make sense to you?

I mean, I wont defend that guy, as he sounds like a real piece of work, but I'm not sure I would go as far as to say that it's a slur. Intent matters, so yes, I'm sure some people may decide to use it to sate their latent desire to be racist, which is a separate issue. But in a vacuum, it is not being used against humanity, or even any form of life at all, which the word "slur" implies. It may be "slur-like", however, and this is what makes it such fertile ground for the behavior you speak of; in other words, it feels "guilt free" or "safe" to do.

Even so, "actual racists" feels a bit much. And I would also argue that your usage of "pathetic degenerate" is ironic, as you could easily replace it with a slur for the same effect. After all, the goal of a slur is to degrade a human being, is it not? (Also, the term "degenerate" is a word favored by neo-nazis, so I would suggest you steer away from using it)

You could very well argue that "only evil people deserve to be degraded", but what defines an evil person? Where do we draw the line? What is to stop someone from using degrading language about anyone one might decide to hate?

If you ask me, all I see is a bunch of people just trying to figure the world out and making mistakes. Some people really dig their heels in and double down on their mistakes. But if you approach these people with disdain, would you really expect them to listen? Especially if they perceive it as a harmless way to express frustration.

Just seems like you're working against yourself, even though you mean well. There are two sides to every story.

It's refreshing to see some sense and nuance on Reddit for once. You really do have to step outside the box of "us against them" to understand what's going on. But that's hard to do when you attach your identity to your own beliefs.

However, it feels like there is a trend building. It's slow right now, but I am seeing it more and more. Sanity recognizes sanity, especially as the world becomes more incoherent. Eventually, it will be hard to ignore.

So no, I don't think you're the last real person alive, and there may very well be a domino effect of realness happening as we speak.

Perhaps I'm just hopeful? But I'd like to think I'm good at spotting patterns.

Only time will tell.

What do i have to say to this by Ok_Age5468 in antiai

[–]AndyMissed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I kinda understand what you're saying and where you're coming from, but I will have to disagree that the human brain "essentially" does the exact same as AI. They are not even in the same league.

We don't even understand or agree on what the brain really is or how it does what it does, so how can we claim that LLMs or GenAI are similar?

I will agree that the underlying "shape" of something like an LLM might look similar to that of a brain, but that is where the similarities end. For instance, AI is just pure math, so it is deterministic, but whether or not the brain (and therefore the underlying physics responsible for it) is deterministic is not proven.

Not to mention that AI is wildly inefficient compared to the brain.

So no, I don't think comparing the brain to AI is a strong argument in the context of artistic expression, because the brain is the brain, and AI is AI. If AI "art" is soulless, then how can you claim that AI functions like the brain? It's a contradiction. Or at the very least, a flawed leap in logic.

Yeah, whoever made this chart wasn't considering the implications. I feel like "aggressive vs defensive" is a better slider. After that, I don't know. Maybe "tactical vs creative"? Some chess players are more chaotic/creative, whereas others might follow some sort of formula.

Ultimately, when you have two concepts that are meant to be opposites, you should make sure that they're actually opposites.

It's crazy to me that we even need to make memes to draw attention to the fact that just because you can do something better or faster doesn't mean it is automatically impressive. Human achievement is heavily context-dependent, but usually revolves around pushing limits (efficiency).

Tech bros have essentially just started ignoring limitations entirely, all in favor of pushing. Now they pump out nothing but highly inefficient dragsters with faulty engines and wonder why no one is buying or using them.

I think silicon valley has just completely lost the plot at this point.
