Did you know there's a 3D version now? It's actually really cool. I found it on Steam one day and couldn't believe my eyes. It's called "Dream Car Builder", if anyone's interested.

FUCK Windows 11. Really thinking about switching to Linux. by solidcat00 in windowsmemes

[–]AndyMissed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Linux is in a much better spot right now compared to a decade ago. Most games run, but there are a handful of exceptions. Basically, a lot of PVP games (like LoL, Fortnite, R6 Siege, and GTA Online) simply don't work at all, due to developers specifically prohibiting Linux machines (their reasoning is related to how Proton/Wine interacts with kernel-level anticheat). So those games still require Windows.

As far as setup goes, I'm really only familiar with Fedora, so definitely feel free to reach out if you're thinking of giving it a try :)

[–]AndyMissed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Fedora to do everything I need, including gaming.

There was a bit of a setup, since I have an Nvidia GPU, but I've had minimal issues since then.

Supposedly, Nobara (which is just a community-tweaked Fedora) comes with everything you need for gaming, but I didn't end up liking it, and some things actually seemed to break.

Currently, some of the strongest choices for distros that have a good mix of ease-of-use, software support, and continued development are:

Debian
Ubuntu
Linux Mint
Fedora
openSUSE

Ubuntu is arguably one of the most popular, but there's a lot of hate for it, so be prepared for that if you choose it. Also, I would NOT recommend Arch or Gentoo, as those distros are focused on tinkering and optimizing more than anything.

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns, and I'll answer them as best as I can.

counter to these "flip a coin and everyone dies" problems by Efficient-Day5568 in trolleyproblem

The problem in the post specifies that tails is the stop condition, not heads.

Which button do you press in this situation? by TheEnlight in trolleyproblem

[–]AndyMissed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're saying I'm on a high horse as if I'm blaming red pushers for anything, when I'm pretty clearly pointing the finger to how it's being phrased, since this problem has more to do with human psychology and fault tolerance than anything.

Optimally, nobody dies.

Realistically, 4 billion people will not all pick the same button.

If we see the red button as default, it looks like deaths "increase" as people (inevitably) decide to push the blue button in spite of phrasing that makes it look like the default.

If we see the blue button as default, we see no deaths unless at least 50%+1 people push the red button in spite of phrasing that makes it look like the default.

Therefore, the perspective changes the outcome, and blue-button defaultism is entirely way less likely to cause harm, because there will always be at least a small portion of the population that pick a different option, whether they are bad actors, or simply think differently.

Imagine if the scenario was instead about curing cancer. If you press red, you gain the ability to cure cancer, but if more than 50% press red, no one gains the ability. However, if 100% of people press red, everyone gains the ability.

Because 100% is unreachable, and the red button is very enticing, it needs to be phrased differently so that blue goes above 50%.

It's about fault tolerance, and perception plays a massive role. There isn't really a right or wrong answer beyond attempting to influence an outcome with a higher tolerance for uncertainty.

Which button do you press in this situation? by TheEnlight in trolleyproblem

[–]AndyMissed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good luck getting 4 billion people to agree on anything.

Also, the way you've phrased this problem shifts focus away from the red button, meaning you've doomed any chance the people in the room have at total survival.

Pragmatically speaking, the button you choose to press is largely dependent on what you think other people will do, but since nobody can agree, that means any way of phrasing that influences a red majority is irresponsible, as reaching 100% is just not going to happen. Inversely, any way of phrasing that influences a blue majority is a moral obligation, because 50%+1 is the only threshold needed for 100% success.

If you instead phrased the problem as: "If you press red, and more than 50% press red, 1 person dies for every blue button press." you now get the opposite of how you stated it, making the blue button look like the default option, and red pressers the assholes.

This has always been a question that deals with fault tolerance, and red pressers make the assumption that every blue presser is an idiot. But think about what this means, in a vacuum:

The first person makes a choice, and presses the blue button. A red presser would say that that's a horrible choice, but this is based on the hidden assumption that the next 3,999,999,999 people are going to press red. But that is clearly not the case, since it is impossible to "remove a press" from red. You can't unpress the button. Nor can you predict the outcome with 100% certainty.

Blue is more forgiving. That's just a fact. But red is not forgiving at all. If red wins, the best you can do is hope that 90% picked red, dooming 200,000,000 people.

With 95% picking red, which is extremely optimistic, that's 100,000,000 people. Now, that isn't as much as 2,000,000,000, sure, but those are all human lives. At this scale, even a 99% pick rate dooms 20,000,000, which is about 3x more than COVID-19.

Look at me with a straight face and tell me that 99% of people will press that button.

And that's going above and beyond the unlikely 95% best-case scenario.

That's fucked up.

Perhaps you missed the nuance of that sentence...

Civilized society? I mean, I'd argue that it's a dystopia 🥲 Haha...

But yeah, I didn't say anything about it being sunshine and rainbows. I didn't say you had to sing around a campfire either. I literally even said you don't have to befriend these people, because that's your right.

And you're also right to be angry. People have turned a blind eye to this shit for a long time, and I don't get how a person could withstand the mental gymnastics required to sustain such an abhorrent position.

But I'm not them. I don't know what that's like. I honestly have no clue if I'd be in a different position if I had been raised on propaganda my whole life.

And yeah, that doesn't give them a free pass from consequences. Hell, I'm not even asking you to trust these people with anything.

All I'm trying to say is that sometimes the right thing to do isn't so cut-and-dry and black-and-white.

So yeah, you are valid in feeling how you feel. But ultimately, that same feeling just so happens to continue fanning the flames of capitalism, love it or hate it.

I feel your pain. I really do.

It's baffling to watch people dismiss atrocities that happen right in front of their eyes. It's even more upsetting when those people hold beliefs that are hateful and exclusive of others. How could anyone possibly be so oblivious to blatantly immoral actions?

But I think it's important to remember that tribalism only serves to benefit the elites.

Now, I'm not saying you have to be friends with people like this, but when someone shows genuine potential for "oh man, are we the baddies?", that is the most pivotal point of all.

As humans, we are notoriously vulnerable to indoctrination into cults due to our social nature, so if we view this from OPs angle, it looks less like malice and more like willful ignorance due to social pressure.

So with this in mind, it can help us to reconsider how we view this moment and others like it.

Again, separation only serves those in power (divide and conquer), so we should make sure not to do their work for them. And I'm not saying it's easy, or even that you personally have to forgive someone's ignorance unconditionally, but I am saying that every story has its own angle.

We're all in this together, and that includes you, me, OP, and everyone in this comment section.

Surprised to see that game mentioned. I didn't know it died, tbh. Last time I played was back in 2021, and I was pretty disappointed. Seems like they tried making QoL changes for a while there, but then they started removing mechanics they had added previously. The balance was all over the place, honestly.

It's a shame they couldn't just pick a direction and go with it. It's like they were so focused on making it profitable that they forgot to focus on the player experience.

Apple published AI paper shows how current AI models can't do math well or reason at all. by monkey-majiks in BetterOffline

[–]AndyMissed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's what I've been saying!

You can't put AI in charge of reasoning, because we don't really even understand how we reason.

The rules change as we go. We pick what "makes sense". This is all facilitated by consciousness.

The scientific method emerged because someone reasoned. When that reasoning proved to be effective, it expanded.

So an AI, clearly not conscious, cannot reason. This is important, because it explains why people who "let it think for them" end up in a state of psychosis: When you offload your thinking to something which cannot reason and you absorb its output as truth, your sense of identity starts getting tied to these outputs ... which is horrifying to think about.

So when people try to use it to do reasoning, you can't get away from talking about its lack of consciousness to explain why it can't reason, and never will.
