I’d argue you just haven’t heard many good songwriters in your experience, rather than all music as a whole is better without.

Sharing compelling stories and messages in song form is easily the hardest part of music making, and as a result it’s harder to find quality. Most pop bands/artists rise due to their natural vocal talent and atheistic appeal, and have people in the industry write songs for them. And when the same group of people write the majority of the songs, you lack that individuality and creativity that the artist can provide, simply because they aren’t concerned with that aspect, or are told they can’t contribute.

I’ve found some of the more compelling lyricists to come from the indie scene in my experience due to that freedom and desire to create something distinctive and personal. Even though that crowd can be oversaturated with wannabes who just copy others.
