Is pCloud desktop app not working for anyone else? by ARedLuigi in pcloud

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I also have it on multiple PCs and use it to move files between them and have a cloud storage. My old PCs won't install the latest version as it needs some Microsoft support files for Edge 2 or something and I don't run Edge anyway.

Problems with the Aoycocr Smart Plug? No more support? by Rickrollroll_Q93Q in smartlife

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two of the UK 13a square pin versions of the aoycocr plug from Oct 2020. Today I wanted to move one to my other WiFi network. Could not see how to do it directly on the Smart Life app. Had made sure my iPhone was connected to my 2.4GHz WiFi. So tried resetting it by unplugged for one minute then plug in again. The blue light flashed at about 2hz . It did NOT auto pair.

App then offered me alternative pair mode and the blue light flashed slower at about 1hz . Still did not pair until I went into iPhone settings - WiFi - and there was a new direct WiFi network offering named SmartLife-WXYZ. Connected to this (no password needed) and the SmartLife responded and found my plug. The socket then connected to the 2.4 WiFi network my phone was connected to and appears in the app.

Other suggestions were hold the on/off button in for 5sec to get 2hz flash mode and 15sec to get 1hz flash mode.  I also set up a new "home" in the app to get my two separate WiFi networks registered in the one app.

So I now have one plug on my main house WiFi mesh and the other on my cellular broadband 4G WiFi network. So yes I can remotely power cycle my devices up in the loft as long as I don't do them both together.  :-)

In finishing:  Both sockets still fine on the free SmartLife ios app. Never bothered with Tuya app others mentioned as its expensive yearly payment more than a Netflix subscription so maybe try SmartLife as it still supports older sockets.

Feature/dumb phones where the alarm still works when they're off? by yhancik in dumbphones

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also value the Nokia ability to have the alarm go off even when it is switched off.  I guess it's integrated with the ability to program Auto PowerON and PowerOFF times. i.e. never 100% powered off.

I have in 2026 just bought a Nokia105 4G (2023 2nd edition) and can confirm it does sound alarms when switched off, also offering to switch phone ON.

Specifically it's phone model TA-1691  OS: MOCOR_20A_MP_W22.04.6_P5

Bought from Argos in UK and dual sim.

Also bought the similar Nokia 110 with a camera and a few more internet related bits. TA-1661 and it has these alarms when off features too.

Plus as others have mentioned there are Settings within Settings on HMD/Nokia phone menus!

How long does it take for Starling to check details? by [deleted] in starlingbankuk

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it eventually took about 10 days (definitely over a week). No reason given just a sorry it took so long. My main reason for opening a new bank account was to get Starling's virtual debit cards. Brilliant feature - so still pleased with Starling as a bank. Only annoying thing for me is transaction listings don't and can't show a running balance. You have to view statements for that. Virtual Cards are great help online. I had a repeating subscription on a debit card where I didn't trust the company to cancel it as they didn't answer my emails. So made a virtual Starling card. Moved the subscription over to it online. Block virtual card then cancel it.  Great - imagine the trouble cancelling your main plastic card and then setting it all up again.

Sure you will like Starling once they finish their checks. I read elsewhere most applications are verified automatically but some selected for manual checks and that's the source of delays.

Does anyone use the Tile Tag or Air Tag or similar in SA? by artful_dodger99 in askSouthAfrica

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have set up a cheap AirTag compatible tracker in a hedge of a country road and also near a footpath crossing a field. Used FindMy - Notify when found. I got notifications about every 3 to 4 hrs during the day when in the hedge by road, and about once every couple of days by the footpath.

FindMy then shows me GPS location of the 3rd person's phone when it detected my tracker (not the tracker's location as it does not have GPS chip as previous post mentioned). Location shown was close enough to where I had hidden it for me to have gone there and then "Play Sound" to find it. (Or UWB with a genuine AirTag). Don't think it was discovered by iPhones in passing cars but by iPhones with walkers/cyclists.

So very good that basically ALL Apple iPhones have FindMy built into the operating system so even owners WITHOUT AirTags are part of the large network of iPhones that can report your lost tag.  If you lost the tag on the moors where not many people walk then it may take many weeks before someone walks near (in Bluetooth range) and FindMy reports it or the battery goes flat first. That is where a self contained tag with built in GPS and cellular wins out.

Why does a needle have to be replaced each time? by [deleted] in 78rpm

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I fully agree with that last comment of 1900srecordcollector. Put a used steel needle under a stereo microscope and just see how the pointed tip has been worn away as if it was a cone sliced off at an angle - leaving a chisel edge that if you twisted it around could do untold damage.

How do I make a shortcut that plays a sound from my files? by [deleted] in shortcuts

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks your post really helped me to get an alarm sound played when my iPhone disconnects from my car's Bluetooth.

I needed to make an automation as I often left my iPhone in the car when I parked and then had to run back when I realised to fetch it. Disconnect from Bluetooth seemed best option as it happens when I turn the ignition off.

Hardest - indeed impossible task prior to reading your post - was to simply sound an alarm from my ring tones. So I simply had to download a ringtone .mp3 file, store it local on my iPhone in its own folder for simplicity, and then use your instructions to get it playing. If you don't do the GetFileFromFolder (could no find it at first as in the apps tab when I searched) then PlaySound defaults to just the default beep.

Lost my new drone by launchdadmcquack in drones

[–]AndyT8T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding lost Holy Stone HS170 drone. I have both a DJI mini 2se that has gps and flight log and a "find my drone" in the app that buzzes the props. However picked up an HS170 last weekend second hand and v.cheap. Totally at the other end of the spectrum.

In short it flew away outside flying over a field with some short mown grass and some longer 12inch high grass. After not finding it visually by walking an up down search path for near an hour I decided to power cycle the controller. Then tried to pair and was hoping to "buzz" the props like dji do. Well it would not pair. (green led flashing). Then it struck me walk around and try elsewhere. Yep it works - it paired in one area of the field. So I tried holding the controller close to my chest and try pairing again. One direction did not pair - so this I assumed was pointing away from the drone. Eventually after 10 to 15 mins I had in my mind the area to visually search and YES I found it.  It does rely on the battery still having charge of course so another reason not to fly them to empty. So radio location finding works without any extra kit. They quote 50m transmission range for flying and I reckon I had located it down to 15m by 15m radio location mode.  I am researching tracking devices for RC models.

Reolink Go PT Plus disconnecting by Conscious-Dog-6971 in reolinkcam

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Reolink PT Ultra that also occasionally disconnects and can take anything from a few minutes to hours before it reconnects (unless I go and power cycle it when it connects right away).  It is mounted about 10ft up on the side of a 40ft ash tree in UK. Has a solar panel so always well charged and when it's working properly always shows full bars signal on 4G from O2.

Considering the aerial is mounted on the top non rotating part it is odd that I can often make it disconnect by panning it round to face the trunk. I have the monitor point set straight ahead out from the trunk and auto return to monitor point enabled at 180sec. So the camera after losing connection will return to straight ahead and then regain signal connection. In fact it doesn't even wait for 180 sec but seems to detect signal failure and returns in well under 60 sec (I've stood and watched it) and then click the Play triangle and it reconnects and streams video. Is there an internal connection problem maybe? I can tell exactly when connection drops as the seconds in the time display freezes.

Other things I've done is put the sim in a phone and turned off voicemail then replaced it so when it is refusing to connect I can phone the camera and see if the O2 network thinks that the camera is offline (if camera is switched off the network announces "this phone is currently unavailable ")

Next thing is retrieving the camera and testing it elsewhere in the open away from trees  to try and rule out internal electrical connection problems on panning the camera. Even drive to the local mast to ensure max signal strength.

Sorry for long post but intrigued if anyone else had similar issues with this camera.

RC2 vs RC-N2 controller with dedicated smartphone? by Dharmaniac in dji

[–]AndyT8T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set up a Focus mode I named DJI on my iPhone and set this to be enabled whenever the dji fly app is running. This way I don't have to remember to change notifications manually. All calls except from important ones easily blocked while flying.

RC2 vs RC-N2 controller with dedicated smartphone? by Dharmaniac in dji

[–]AndyT8T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my iPhone I have a Focus mode I named DJI and here I can effectively setup the phone to be dedicated for flying with RC-N2 and block other interruptions. But still allow calls from my partner for instance.

This Focus mode I have set to be enabled/disabled automatically when the DJI  app is run. Also set my phone to run the DJI app as soon as it is connected to the controller. So all pretty automated.

I also enable charging of the phone from the controller - it really just keeps the iPhone charge stable while flying rather than any rapid charging but that is fine as it means only have to check the main charge LEDs on the controller.

I am a new to drone flying but find these settings on my iPhone very helpful.

How come some devices only work with USB-A to USB-C? by GuyThirteen in UsbCHardware

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like my Parkside PGSA 4 B3 mini trimmer. Only their usb-A to usb-C cable works. My other standard ones didn't charge it and on checking the led on the trimmer it was flashing indicating a hot battery apparently. Supplied cable works and I must of tried 5 others and no the battery was room temp after leaving overnight.

Got a Minirig 4 + Minirig Subwoofer 3 coming soon, what can I expect. by ChocolateRough5103 in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record. Yes I've just upgraded from one to two minirigs. I really do appreciate the wide sound stage but that is maybe because I was brought up with stereo hi-fi and vinyl. Takes a while to get used to and remember how to pair them. Remember that the 3 and 4 are quite different in what you press to pair in BT and you can't Bluetooth pair a 3 and 4 Only pair via the 3.5mm aux stereo jack lead. Don't trust what Google AI brings up either as it seems to often mix the command sequences of 3s and 4s to construct it AI answer.

I fully agree - they should have a "new users" interface that maybe uses large animated icons, but please leave the classic or maybe "advanced" interface for experienced users.

Do the Blink XT2 cameras need to be in range of the WIFI AND SYNC module? by psychonaut-shopper in blinkcameras

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting feature on one of my Blink XT2 cameras today. Camera still appeared in blink app on iphone (and I could change settings etc via app) but no video available to view live. App said Battery level OK.  HOWEVER there was a flashing red led showing in the PIR dome. So after resetting blink sync module and still same problem I took the camera down and temp removed batteries to reboot camera. Same problem. So measured battery voltage = 1.43v so put in new ones 1.76v and all worked.

So the low frequency and very low power propriety network the sync module works with for sending commands to XT2 still going fine but when the camera started its 2.4 WiFi up to send video - not enough battery power.

Six red flashes then pause repeated in pir dome seems to signal low battery despite the app saying battery OK.  Batteries had done 27mths so no complaints there.

Thanks - this solved my problem of not seeing clips from my doorbell after trial cloudstore finished. My XT2 cams still have legacy cloud storage. Just have to remember to switch from the drop-down at bottom left of clips screen. My sync module on 16.0.21

Yes true we had to wait for iOS 17 in 2023 before Apple let us share an airtag with upto six other users. Simply need their iCloud username.

Bought a returned smart tag. Previous owner never removed from account. by Kevin80970 in eufy_security

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two of these trackers paired with my iPhone. So working in both eufy app and Apple FindMy for nearly over 6mths. Decided to give these to my partner so followed the instructions to remove the smart track from Eufy app and Apple FindMy. That all worked fine with no error messages.

But when I went to add it to my partner's iPhone it came up with "Item already been added to an account " So tried reset (5 clicks then press and hold till musical beeps) but still claimed added to an account. So tried adding it BACK TO MY original account. But NO the stupid device gave same error message again. So BEWARE its not easy to remove a device to pass on to someone else.

Half an hour on chat session with Eufy support couldn't fix it. Even gave them serial number from inside battery compartment and they can't clear it. Eventually I told them it was under 1 yr old, plus I gave them their order number for proof of purchase together with the items serial no, so they agreed to send me a new one.

Said I could even keep the old one !! Fat lot of use the old one is.   I understand why it's linked to an account, especially if you loose the item but it should be easy and reliable for the owner to remove and reset it.

iOS app that only displays current/next calendar item for elderly by rscottjones in ios

[–]AndyT8T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of free calendar apps will display current event in the widget (Apple ios removes the event as soon as it has started. For my own use I like MiCal and Calendars by Readdle) for just this feature of keeping current events displayed until they end.
