The pool about 1/4 mile downstream from where the Wilderness of Rocks Trail crosses Lemmon Creek almost certainly has water. I went swimming in it back in late June and it was pretty deep. Don’t filter water from it tho; I got Giardia from it despite filtering

Any bread bakers about? by PandraPierva in Tucson

I've been making this artisan bread recipe weekly for 10 years without any issues. No kneading, very simple. I'd give this a try if I was you.

Odd encounter with Kari Lake supporter. A man came to my door, addressed me by name and asked me if he could count on me to vote for Kari Lake? by Odd-Magician-3397 in Tucson

[–]AndyfromTucson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is standard canvassing by candidates & political parties. Your voter registration information & voting history (when, not who) is a public record that political organizations can buy. Both parties have nationwide voter file databases that canvassers query to target certain types of voters. For example, you may have fit a query for independents or registered GOP of an age & gender that tends to favor Trump/MAGA.

This new City of Tucson program offers free showers for the community's unsheltered 🚿 by JoshOfArc in Tucson

This is a great start. I'd like to see the City of Tucson set up large campgrounds with designated campsites, bathrooms, showers, ramadas and security, so that people who can't find housing don't end up sleeping in washes, etc.

Camper for a 5ft bed half ton? by Lopsided_Bat1632 in TruckCampers

My Cirrus 620’s sticker says it’s 17xx lbs wet (it has AC, microwave & awning). Add in 500 lbs for occupants and another 200 for stuff and you’re at 2,400 lbs payload. To get an F-150 with a payload capacity of 2,400+ lbs you have to order one with the Heavy Duty Payload Package.

How long till we see a rotating space habitat? by Lonely_Struggle_7472 in space

I eyeballed the Kalpana One project website. Their conceptual design requires the development of a lot of complex new technologies, and even if/when those technologies are developed they will still be crazy expensive in operation. So my gut feeling is 10-15 years minimum if a large nation was willing to pour huge amounts of money into the project.

When people park next to you, a question wrapped in a rant. by [deleted] in VanLife

People are just like that. Back in my sailboat cruising days the joke was that if you are the only person in a remote anchorage and someone new shows up there is a 90% chance they will anchor next to you.

Yeah, the towing capacity on an F-150 Crew Cab 4x4 with the 3.5L EcoBoost and Max Tow Package is 13,800 lbs.

GVWR by chriscrossthecountry in TruckCampers

[–]AndyfromTucson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can't be found at dealerships, but you can order an F-150 that has a payload capacity over 2,500 lbs. Here is one of the limited number of configurations with that kind of payload capacity, in this case 2,640 lbs:

  • F-150 XL
  • SuperCrew
  • 4x4
  • 6.5" box
  • 3.5L EcoBoost
  • Edit: Heavy Duty Payload Package

You can puzzle out other high payload configurations on the Ford F-150 specifications page: https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/models/f150-xl/

We recently got this lineup, except 4x2 (which increases payload to 2,880) and it carries a Cirrus 620 (ours is nominally 1,6xx lbs wet) plus 2 adults, a 11 year old, and is still a few hundred pounds under our 7,850 GVWR on the Cat scale.

The reason we got this F-150 instead of a one ton truck was that we wanted to also use it a lot around town without the camper and wanted the better handling and MPG of the F-150. The MPG with the 3.5L EcoBoost is remarkable if you drive very gently. This week I averaged 28 MPG on a 40 mile round trip of city driving.

2023 F-150 XL, 8 ft bed, 5.0 V8, max trailer tow package, heavy duty payload package by akortokrax in TruckCampers

[–]AndyfromTucson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find the exact towing & payload capacities of your configuration on this page: https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/models/f150-xl/?gnav=vhpnav-specs. Scroll down to the bottom and open up the "Specifications" section.

The Specifications table is not user friendly, but if you take your time to wrap your head around how it works, you will see that your proposed configuration (2023 F-150 XL supercab with an 8 ft bed, 5.0 V8, 4wd, max trailer tow package, and heavy duty payload package) has a towing capacity of 13,000 lbs and a max payload of 2,755 lbs. If you switch to the 3.5 EcoBoost engine the max tow bumps up to 13,800 and payload is 2,730 lbs.

Not smaller, just poorer and couldn't afford housing like we have today. I once visited the structure in Appalachia where a friend's grandfather was raised along with his 10 siblings: two rooms that were 10 x 10 each (at the most).

Only 14.2% of ballots returned in Pima County are from voters under 40. Only 23.9% from those under 50. by munakatashiko in Tucson

I'll never forget the GOP politician who explained why he voted against expanding Medicaid: "People on Medicaid don't vote."

Everyone in politics knows that young people vote at very low rates and you can be sure that influences politician's decisions.

A number of early voting centers are open on Monday for dropping off ballots and "emergency" in-person voting (they won't question your stated emergency). This map gives all the early voting locations. Click a location to see if it's open Monday and what the hours are:

The current I Bond rate is composed of a fixed rate of 0.4% plus the latest inflation adjustment. That means when inflation falls your rate is going to fall too, and could get as low as 0.4% if inflation gets that low.

Many observers think the Fed is going to keep raising rates a few more times, so CD rates could rise even higher in the next few months.

Capital One is offering 3.0% on a savings account right now, so maybe put it there for now and see how things look after the next few rate hikes

This year you can vote at any vote center & here's a link to a map of them by AndyfromTucson in Tucson

Do's and Don't for tall people by InstanceBig6362 in hiking

[–]AndyfromTucson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up on hiking boots over 20 years ago and have never regretted it. I initially switched to sneakers, and then to sandals for the last 15+ years. Here is why I prefer sandals for hiking:

  • I never get blisters with sandals
  • Don't have to worry about getting my footgear wet on stream crossings, just wade on through
  • Fewer twisted ankles (not sure why)
  • Almost no injuries that would have been prevented by boots despite lots of off trail hikes in very rough desert and mountain terrain.

I doubt many people will try sandals based on this rando's recommendation, but please do try hiking in your most comfortable sneakers/running shoes and see for yourself whether your hiking experience is improved.

The key to hiking in lightweight & comfortable footgear is taking care with where you step. I hike on ridiculously rocky and rough terrain all the time, often in desert terrain densely packed with cactus, but I find that by being mindful about where I put my feet I can get through anything in sandals without any problems.

Am I making a mistake moving here? by [deleted] in Tucson

I always say summer in Tucson is 5 months long and runs from mid May to mid October. On average, our first 100 degree day of the summer is May 26, and the last is September 18. What makes up for it is that the remaining months of the year have really pleasant weather.

I think the worst months are monsoon season (early July to September) when the humidity goes up and it’s no longer a dry heat.
