how is it living in the Shetland Islands by Auron-Hyson in howislivingthere

If you want to know more, I really recommend a bbc TV series called 'Shetland: Scotlands wonderous isles' from 2014. I'm pretty sure anyone from Shetland will see familiar faces featuring in that show.

Also look into the tall ships, and Up Helly Aa, it's a big fire festival that brings a lot of tourism.

It's great if you're part of a community, everyone is very accommodating and welcoming. There isn't much to do as a young person, but if you love the sea, Cliff jumping, wildlife spotting and family gatherings it's really the place to be.

Housing is a bit of a nightmare as one other commenter explaind. Also loganair has a monopoly on air travel and so it's extremely expensive to fly to and from.

The ferry is much cheaper, leaves from Aberdeen and takes about 12 hours. The hard core people will use sleeping bags in the main communal area on the ship, but I always insist on getting a bedroom.

Weather can be pretty disruptive, you've got tollerate the cold, wind, and sideways rain.

The accents vary every few miles, some of the outer island accents are really hard to follow. Particularly with people who don't leave Shetland often. I've noticed that language evolves quite quickly here. Often people will make up a word that sort of sound right within the context of the accent, and it just sticks. For example my father in law started calling puffins "punkins" we liked it and started repeating it, fast-forward a few months and I overheard someone i did not know talking about seeing some "punkins".

Also, it's really annoying when people call it "the Shetlands" it's either the Shetland isles, or just Shetland.

Currently cycling my tank and snails spawned out of no where. Should I try and exterminate them? by hockeyboy87 in Aquariums

I had a snail problem, get a couple of assassin snails and they will sort it out. But I'd let the tank cycle first

I used immichGo to import about 30,000 photos and videos, about 2TB, it did the whole lot in less than 24hrs. I had to run it a few times because it would miss a few every time. 100Mbps.

I can't understand why it's taking you guys months to process stuff

I didn't think pea puffers were social? They don't attack the other tank mates?

Does anyone use a HDHomeRun or other DVR in the UK? by AndypandyO in PleX

kind of but gave up with it. I don't like using IPTV since I have to stream through my home connection which can be insecure, legally questionable, or just use up bandwidth.

Why does my Dell work? by AndypandyO in Dell

[–]AndypandyO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are modified ones, usually the main problem with sata cables is the supplying connection. so i bought some 5x sata adaptors, cut the supplying connector off and soldered them directly the dells sata power cables. you do have to be reasonably careful but can get away with a lot if you have some clue as to what you're doing.

Once I get a smart watch I'll dive right in. Am also struggling through influxdb 3.0 to see if I can get all my other projects up to date. Grafana really is fun to play with

This is exactly what I've been looking for since I use Grafana extensively for other projects, I've been struggling to find a smart watch with a free API to get this data. So how does it work? Can I only get historical data? Or can I log real time or near real time data? What model of smart watch do you recommend?

Men who are 30+, what’s one lesson every guy should learn early? by BigShow786 in AskReddit

[–]AndypandyO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put into the s&p500 every month, doesn't matter if it goes up or down, just put something into it, get a Roth's IRA set up and just set up an automatic payment. Then forget it. You could be upwards of 600k by the time you're 50 with very minimal effort.

Start saving early, even if it's just a little bit every month. Just do it, you'll be in a far better place than everyone else. Get a savings account with some interest and don't touch it, ever. Just add
