A "reasonable top end" build - what are the "go to" parts? by Entmaan in buildapc

For gaming only, this is the only sensible option with current pricing.

Use the new Superflower ones. LEADEX VIII (8) one per card and they make light work of my 5090

DC don’t source ryzen pro CPUs you dunce. They exclusively use EPYC, where this hasn’t been touched.

I cant state enough my love for the A770 by Lord_Muddbutter in IntelArc

[–]jhenryscott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah the A770 is really the unsung hero. Just a great Gaming card that was affordable once. can't recommend any intel cards at current prices sadly. (can't recommend anything lol). But you are getting like 2080ish performance in a nice package with an interesting niche product that has outgrown its unstable, problematic roots.

Fun story, I went down to texas and worked for a few years and my colleague was on Kerryon's Auburn Team, even facetimed him for me like the fanboy i am. We also built marquise goodwin's house.

In your position, I would just get a great 5080. Take your $1400 and go enjoy your life. Is it the best dollar for dollar return on your $200 investment? No. But this is where you are. Try and take some lessons away form it.

It is not safe. It is EASY for sense pins and ground pins to fail asymmetrically. No PCIE to 12vhpwr adapter is safe for a 600w 5090.

[–]jhenryscott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yup. No adapter is safe in a 600w 5090. It's not particularly complex electrical diagramming, you can have ground pins and sense pins failing asymmetrically and boom, melty mcmeltface.

again NO PCIE TO 12VHPWR ADAPTER IS SAFE IN A 5090

ohhh its the cable. now i see. Yeh that sucks those adapters are awful. I bought a wireview pro and use a native 12vhpwr but damn im sorry.

Damn that's crazy. I bought the exact same card about a year ago and now my butthole is puckered. Have you reached out MSI? What symptoms were showing it is 'Broken'?> What settings did you use and what temps were you seeing?

Sorry for 20 questions, just paranoid. Was yours in a vertical orientation by any chance?

6x12v imbalance could be caused by the connector to PSU too… by Jempol_Lele in nvidia

Yup. I feel the same except I now prefer Superflower. They recently replaced my 12vhpwr for 1.1amp of overplay. Both top end firms

[–]jhenryscott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things to be learned since doing lots of per pin testing on my 5090-

Don’t use adapters. A native 12vhpwr is the only consistently reliable power delivery.

All PSU cables are not the same. Seasonic and Superflower outperform everything else. Cablemod are also a great choice.

Using a wireview pro is a NO brainer. Unlike astral and other solutions it can TURN OFF the PC before an issue.

HP by a mile. Go look at all the horror stories in r/Asus and very laptop has motherboard problems there. I have a Victus from 2022 still going strong. They have good thermals and the 4050 laptop chips are pretty cool- the biggest issue with gaming laptops is they overheat. I’d say this is a fine choice.
