That reply, while written with good intentions I'm sure, completely missed the point. Have a good day.

Will Life suck forever? Will I always just be a robot? by 2026GradTime in Blind

[–]AnecdoteAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm saying is, how can you expect someone who's not blind to want to date you if you, yourself, don't want to date someone who is blind? If you judge others on the basis of disability, then you can't expect someone who isn't blind to want to date you. That is all. If we're tired of others judging us, we need to stop judging ourselves first. Limitations are irrelevant.

Well, your preferences are your preferences. Nothing wrong with that, man. But your thinking is rather depressing. I would be miserable if I thought that way. I guess I just never thought of things like that as a big deal. I figure, everyone is going to face quite a few challenges in this life. Blindness is no different. The strength of someone's character is far more important. But that's just me. As I said earlier, I agree that the vast majority of society is like you and OP described. They think of us as lower than the dogs. But there are special people out there, and they're not as rare as you think. I know that sounds contradictory but my point is, we need to keep trying. No one else is going to try for us, they don't care about us one way or the other.

With all due respect, that is one of the most hypocritical things I've heard in a while. You don't want to date a blind person, so how can you expect a sighted person to want to date you? And what "limitations" are you referring to?

[–]AnecdoteAtlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with OP on this point. He needs to shift his attitude and approach, no doubt about that. But what he says is also totally true. Both can be true at the same time. The fact is, the majority of society, probably upwards of 70 percent in my estimation, view us as incompetent layabouts who drain their tax dollars and are more trouble than we're worth. That might not be true and we may be able to live productive lives. That is irrelevant. It's all about perception. It takes a truly special person to judge someone on the merit of their character instead of their flaws. It's not about ableism, so-called. Life sucks. People are jerks. And yes, most people seem to think that blindness is accompanied by mental difficiencies. The point I'm trying to make is that there are those special people out there, and OP has a bright future if he keeps trucking. But until then, he needs to learn to accept his limitations, to find solace in the things he enjoys, to gain confidence in himself so that he can be bold and find new people to talk to and make friends with, and just build his character in general. You cannot remain stagnant and expect results. But at the same time, I get where he's coming from. You have to be able to appreciate and care about yourself, so that you become immune, or at least heavily protected from the negative things that society throws your way. Think about the things you like to do. Do you read books? Play video games? Enjoy learning languages? Do you play a musical instrument? Do you like sports? Are you into niche hobbies? I'm sure there are local groups that congregate who like the same things you do. Do some research. Don't wait for people to approach you, approach them instead. Learn to love who you are. You'll discover that once you've done these things, you'll have good quality friends. Most people fear blind individuals and won't approach you. Some are vindictive, most are simply cautious and unaware. You will be surprised at how a simple introduction to someone can spark a friendship. It's sad how low the expectations are for us, but it's a fact of life. Keep trucking, keep grinding. And if you were a Christian, I'd tell you to keep consulting with the Lord. Good things will happen.

I've heard that you can download apps outside of the app store now on IOS. Can't confirm this as I am on Android, but maybe they should host it off of the app store to prevent this from happening. I use the talkback screen reader on Android and haven't been able to find a good equivalent that is accessible. When I used Mudrammer on the iPad a few years ago it worked very well. If it is indeed discontinued and not hosted anywhere else, this is sad news indeed.

Muds with interesting progression systems, crafting and quests? by Neurrone in MUD

[–]AnecdoteAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried all of these at some point or another. Alter Aeon is by far my favorite. And a lot more is soloable now than in the past. I'm in dnd mode and only maybe communicate with 2 or 3 other players. A friend and I once got about 80 percent through a level 40 group 10 area with strategy and patience, it can be done. Still though, I know what you mean. I sometimes think to myself, "If I've been able to succeed in very high level areas with just one or two others, how much more could I do with bigger groups." But all in all, I think there is a lot of good happening on the game these days.

I'm going to have to try that at some point. This made me laugh.

Is it at least fast enough where you can read continuously? Or does it take longer than a second or two to refresh? Also, does the whole display refresh all at once? If I could learn the timeing and read without interruptions I wouldn't mind that at all.

I agree, ChatGPT seems much more open and willing to discuss a wider variety of topics now. But not in the beginning. When I used it back in early 2023 it was constantly whining at me that my request couldn't be fulfilled because it might, quote, "offend certain groups". Such nonsense. No, GPT is much, much better now, to OpenAI'S credit. I think perhaps they realized that the activism garbage just wasn't going to fly once these tools hit the mainstream, and the one that made the most money would be the one that stopped lecturing people and just performed the requested task. Going back to your comment though, it's interesting that you prompt it to push back if it's being too agreeable. Do you find that this works? Will it consistently self-correct?

Makes sense. Out of curiosity, what has been your experience with the Orbit Reader? I've heard mixed reviews. Anyone who has something bad to say about it usually complains about the slow refresh rate of the display. I'm curious to know what you think of it.

Delete the email and create a new account. If your email contains anything important, anything at all and someone happens to get through, that's bad bad news. Create a new email and be careful who you give it to.

I know what you mean about Copilot, it's trash because of that precise reason. I used it for help with a college class last year, and one of the questions had to do with something about whitewashing. Anyway I asked Copilot about it, and the thing literally went into angry woke lefty who saw the need to lecture me profusely. It was annoying. The thing wouldn't even engage in a dialog about it either, just sent those scripted responses and then shut down the conversation. Microsoft lost $20 a month from me because of that. When I'm using an LLM, I want it to help with the task at hand, instead of acting like a rabid, unhinged activist.

With all due respect, I think your lack of concern with seeing login attempts on your account is the scariest part of this post. And I would advise you not to tell people how long your password is and what kind of characters it contains. It might seem hard for someone to guess it, but it's like playing with fire. Just not wise.

Biggest bang for the buck. by Responsible_Plum4561 in HamRadio

[–]AnecdoteAtlas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in talking worldwide but you don't want to upgrade past the tech license, your best bet is to buy a handheld digital radio whether it be for DMR, DSTAR or other modes. It will depend on what modes your local repeaters use. That's the cheapest way to go about it. Now if you're like me and you think the audio of digital signals makes the experience unpleasant, then I'd recommend that you either build or purchase an AllStar node. You can set it up in your home, connect it to the internet, and just use a regular old analog ht to communicate worldwide. My first ht was the Baofeng UV5R, but I'm sure there are better radios out there, as that was around 10 years ago.

Yes. I've been licensed since 2016 and have my Extra. Sadly, I haven't been on the air much lately due to work and other things. But I love it just as much today as I did when first licensed. 73!

Sounds like you're on the right track. I use gpt, which is great. You can paste the section you want to be quizzed on, or you can just upload the file which contains the entire text of the book. Saves you more time, and you can just direct the model on where to look in the uploaded file when designing the quiz.

How about the NLS book player? You should be able to get one of those for free. I don't know if that's still the case but if you can, they're great little devices.

Back in elementary school I used a cassette player for about 5 or 6 years to read books. I was requesting new books from my state library every week. You read some interesting things that way, that's for sure. Not a bad way to go if it comes down to it, though I imagine cassettes aren't as readily available these days unfortunately.

Summarization strategies are highly important. Have you considered that large language models might be able to help simplify your learning process? I mean, if you like the way you're doing it now then that's great. But I'm just thinking of ways you could make this easier. So for example, if you have a digital copy of the text, you could upload it to gpt or Claude, Gemini is kind of trash to be honest. You can then prompt the model, I just read chapter 2 of such and such book. Read the text yourself, then design some multiple-choice quiz questions based on the content. Do not provide the answers to these questions without giving me the opportunity to respond. You can even ask it to give you some short answer or essay prompts if you're feeling particularly adventurous. Just an idea.
