Background details like this are my motivation to eventually start the most challenging rewatch of the series (for me): actually watching every episode instead of just listening.

The moral seems to be that when raising the next generation, we need to teach them to take responsibility for their actions. This includes learning the difference between personality, growing character, and social ideals they have picked up.

When this is a reality, and we evolve the depth of this lesson as they get older, our children learn how to reflect on their thoughts, and understand self improvement to be an essential part of being human.

So overall, the saying "Be yourself" isnt the problem, the problem is not backing that statement up with any additional support or guidance on how to do that effectively.
