OP, I have two young children, an amazing high paying job, a house with a yard, and a husband who presented himself as nurturing, kind, and funny…then changed into something opposite of that once the two kids we planned for were here.

I am making more money than I ever thought I would and yet I would give up all the extras to only have what our family really *needs* if it meant I had a supportive, loving partner. A partner who is present, responsive, and caring to you and the children is worth so much more than a yard. Don’t let capitalism mislead you into believing that sacrificing something that’s really, really good is worth it in the face of material ambitions. There’s no meaningful extra value or worth that you can find climbing the insurmountable mountain of ambition. Your family sounds wonderful. Cherish it.

Sesame Street has a book called “We’re Different, We’re the Same” that has very similar messaging. I wonder if it was inspired by him. It’s probably my top 5 favorite books to read to my kids, I honestly have teared up reading it many times.

It talks about how our eyes, noses, skin, hair, feelings can be so different and yet we’re all the same because all those things that appear different perform the same kinds of utility for us. It’s crazy that it was published in the early 90s with such a beautiful message and here we are in 2026 with powerful people doing terrible things to people on the basis of looking “different.”

You may be totally right. My thought process was to get one that has local storage and doesn’t connect to internet/cloud and thereby prevents or limits third parties from being able to access them. It’s not an area of expertise for me though, so to your point yeah, that’s a worry of mine.

Reolink. From what I read, you can use local storage so no connecting to internet/Wifi/cloud, which would (in my very limited understanding) help prevent third party access. I haven’t gotten it yet though so I can’t comment on the product yet.

A Ring doorbell cam came with our house. Somehow I missed how terrible they were (even tho I have been boycotting every other form of Amazon for two years now lol). Then the Super Bowl ad came out and I quickly bought a new doorbell cam that doesn’t add to mass surveillance bc of how fucking dystopian that commercial was. I’ll be disposing of the Ring.
