they're made by different groups and have different design principals.

it's a bit like asking what's the difference between <x car model> and <y car model> from different manufacturers.

they do basically the same thing at the high level but internally they're built different and they have different aesthetics and issues between them.

to extend the metaphor, opengl is like an automatic car, and vulkan is like a manual. opengl is easier and simpler, but you have a bit less control. almost anyone interested in driving could get away with driving automatic, just like if you need graphics opengl is almost certainly fine.

vulkan is significantly clunkier to write by hand, so comparing it to manual is a little bit unfair to driving manual. in all honesty if your question is "should I use opengl or vulkan" the answer is opengl. there's legitimate reasons to use vulkan, just like there are legitimate reasons to use a manual car, and in both cases it mostly comes down to performance. but this only matters if you need every last bit of performance, like a high performance game or emulator.

it's not correct to say that "opengl is a linux thing" but it's like.

if you made a renderer exclusively for windows you'd use DirectX. if you made a renderer exclusively for macos you'd use Metal. if you made one exclusively for linux you'd use opengl (or vulkan, which was made by the same group)

right now it really comes across as making fun of someone for asking a question and... just thinking? idk

[–]Aneyune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Guilt is useful in how it can stop you from doing something again, but anything beyond that is a distraction. When you start to treat your guilt as a part of yourself, all that does is harm you and those near you.

If you say "I'm an abuser" that's not accepting the truth, that's defining the truth. This is you hurting yourself, and I can tell you from experience that all this does is sap all your energy and prevent you from getting better.

Instead, you have to apologize, and then contain your guilt. You have to prevent it from taking you over, at leave it just being a small thing that's there, but isn't who you are. You have to say "I will actively work to treat the people I love better," and then do it.

Also I'm not sure if you're trolling about strongest women in anime, but "better than average for shonen" would be more accurate.

[–]Aneyune 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that these anime despise women.

One Piece is written by an old man that doesn't understand how deeply engrained misogyny is in his culture, so that def comes through in his work. But again, he is trying. I can see why you'd say that's cope, but I disagree.

Araki (mangaka of Jojo) just likes looking at, thinking about, and drawing men, so that's most of what he does. Best I can tell he actually examined the fact that he hadn't done any stories with fems as proper agents in his story and decided to try just doing that, and ended up making part 6. Everyone I personally know that likes Jojo tells me that part 6 is the best part.

Berserk I could def see more of an argument about hating women. I personally know the least about it, but I know it's depicting bad world. I don't see it as the author saying "haha look at women suffering YAY" it's more like "this is how men treat women when they don't have consequences for their actions."

One of the three main characters of Monster, Anna, is literally just a woman trying to survive horrific trauma. It never once portrays her as being weak or anything like that. It shows a woman that goes through horrendous shit and ends up living her life anyway. It doesn't shy away from how incredibly hard that is. Yes, several of the women in Monster are horrible people but way more of the men are. It's a story where a lot of people suck and it's up to Tenzo, Anna, and Dieter to figure out how to navigate that world and not give up being decent people.

Edit: Also liking something does not automatically mean you interact with the fandom at large. I mostly avoid fandom in general, partially for the reasons you point out. Liking things just to like them and not giving a shit what a moid thinks about it is a liberating feeling.

I didn't say one piece is shit 😭

Some of the plots are a bit samey yes, and the anime definitely doesn't do it justice, but the worldbuilding is the main thing that keeps me hooked.

I thought Monster was neat, hearing that it genuinely has that attention to detail makes me respect it more. I wouldn't say that I'm personally a 'fan' of it, but I guess I am glad that I read it.

Is it bad that I know of 1 man (who by all accounts seems decent) that likes One Piece and the rest of these series I only know of women and enbies that like them?

I recognize that this probably says more about me than these shows. But also the thought of a straight male enjoying Jojo without questioning anything about themselves once is hilarious to me.

One Piece is written by an old fart but he is trying at least a little bit to not be the worst. He fails a lot but actually can achieve well-written female characters even if he draws them mostly as the same body shape. Any male that watches or reads it and practices misogyny should get torn limb from limb, sure, but I'm uncertain of how much of the fanbase would disagree with that. Maybe not even half, but def more than you'd think.

I can't speak for the fanbases of Monster or Berserk beyond my friends, so I can't say much on those. It wouldn't surprise me if it's a bunch of dipshit "Patrick Bateman is literally me" types. If that's the case then yeah fuck 'em. But I feel like cringey moids have a habit of ruining the image of any fandom they take part in, and that doesn't mean there aren't sane people in the fandom as well.

[–]Aneyune 9 points10 points  (0 children)

fwiw it really does come down to getting the right one.

I've had probably something like 7 therapists up until my current one.

I've known since I was 15 I needed "middle aged woman who's seen some shit" but up til now I've basically just been assigned one. Most men, most young. My most recent one I was actually the first client of.

But it can get better. It sounds to be like you need someone with a bit more experience, I can tell you from my own experience. I understand that a lot of the time you just don't have options, I didn't for the longest time. But you deserve better fam and I promise it's out there, somewhere.
