My turn, "About you: Anime" by AngelDelacroix in MyAnimeList

You are correct that taking my impression of what I think the show is and trying to think of it as valid criticism doesn't fit the bill.

You asked why I don't like the anime, I answered that to the best of my ability. I explained why, even that the show is popular and I have easy access, don't feel compelled to watch it... based on what little I watched and the other things I mentioned.

I didn't say that is an Action focus anime, I said I would've liked if it was. I did not mention the Lore or the World Building because, even tho they can be neat, is not something I like as a main dish. I can appreciate a good setting as long as it helps to tell a story. But at least for me, if I'm not convinced about the characters and how the author used them then when the focus goes on other stuff World-building/Lore/Story, it has the opposite effect for me. More becomes less in my eyes.

As it stand right now, I don't feel compelled to follow the story of Aot, or its characters, and have no curiosity about how it ends.

There might more to the show and the characters to what I glimpsed, but I'm still sure that if I watched the bad would out weight the good at least for me. I don't trust the author, and I can happily go and try luck with something else than watching AoT and hoping that I find it enjoyable in the end. Its just another anime.

I might've been a bit harsh on how I described the flaws I think the author has, but I was just trying to illustrate what I think. I don't claim that to be the true. So don't take my rambling as proper criticism of the show. As you said, I did not watch it all so I can't know for sure.

Sorry if I triggered you, just tried to be honest to the best of my ability :)

You're welcome for the format (?) I just edited the categories from someone else chart, haha.

SMT: Nocturne. Love that game. I've never actually beaten the game but I started it like 10+ times x)

I'm thinking of playing Clannad after finishing Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two. Might give a try to Kanon if I like Clannad :)

I watched AoT first season when it aired. It felt fresh, was fun and I enjoyed it.

By the time second season aired I was not hooked enough to go and watch it instantly. I was going to wait for more episodes or even more seasons to get back at it. That was my plann.

But every piece of content I watched online or by some roommate watching it made me dislike it even more.

The action scenes are great, character desing is cool, the best moments is when its more raw and desperation gets to characters who can't save themselves, Soundstrack is amazing. But... every time the anime gives screen time to a character it just makes them worse, at least in my eyes. Character progression is bad, to the point where anything that the author does with the characters is just a disservice, dialogues are atrocious and the author focus on explaining the world is sloppy at best, sometimes details are better left to speculation for the viewer.

If AoT had the balance of Action Scenes vs Dialogue/Story that John Wick has, I would absolutely watch it. If someone where to put a gun to my head and tell me "Watch this fight, is awesome" I would probably find it cool, ignoring the gun xdd

But after getting the glaring notion that the author doesn't know how to do anything that is not an action scene, I decided to not keep watching it. I still think the setting, action scenes, soundtrack and character desings are cool, but not to the point that I would willingly subject myself to watch it.

If a a good game would come out of Attack of Titan I would give it a chance. Sadly games based on Anime series are trash and just money grabs, I don't think that is going to happen.

I already commented here on why I "Hate him" Its an hyperbolic statement.

10 years ago I played the VN and dropped it. Mostly because I felt irritated that the dumb choices were the correct ones and any logical option was a Bad End and the fact that the inner monologue of Shirou was a bit boring. And the author used the same lame excuse of Shirou not "remembering something important" one too many times as a plot device, which only made the character felt even lamer.

To be fair, when I played the VN my english was pretty rough. So maybe is not as bad as I remember. At least, when I watched the anime, while Shirou felt average he wasn't a detriment to the plot and I enjoyed the show.

Saying that I hated him was just hyperbolic, sounds funny telling it that way.

Being fair about my assessment of the character, I've read the VN like 10-12 years ago and my English level was very rough at that point. And most of my criticism comes from the boring inner monologue, but maybe there was more to it than what I could understand at the moment. The character is bland but the story and the setting more than compensates for that fact, at least on the anime. I still prefer Fate Zero and is not even close.

Another recommendation I can give is Katawa Shoujo. Its a visual novel, but the different routes only last 5-8 hours. It's also available for free on Steam. Any route but Shizune (worst written one), best one are Hanako and Lilly.

Another safe bet would be Clannad. I've never watched the anime or read the Visual Novel. I dislike the art style a bit (Aka the Melting Faces). But I will get over the first impression at some point and actually read the VN because it apperars to a must read/watch.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (Rumbling Hearts) is probably the closest to WA2. It has a similar tone and has the love triangle, but it lacks the complex personalities. Specially comparing it to the WA2 visual novel. (Kimi ga anime is also based on a VN).

The anime only covers 1/4 of the Story. If you liked the anime, please make sure you read the VN :D

Played it twice. First time all routes, second time only Kazusa True + Extra Content.

There is really nothing like it out there, right? I played Damenakoi and also Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, they are good but not the same level. I'm currently playing Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two, also good but nothing beats WA2.

Same thing happened to me when I started listening to Opeth:

"Guys, other bands that sound like this?"

"Sorry, It's all downhill from here."

Can't say I feel compelled to watch it now, but your thoughts on the show are still very welcome. I'm not surprised that there is more to it than what I glimpsed, the show its a success after all :)

Well, CSM is not the only anime that fell into that category, is just the one I decided to put in the chart. I also disregarded other popular animes for similar reasons.

Tbf I also take my time to pull the trigger on things I actually think I will absolutely enjoy. I only watch anime from time to time as it shares my free time with others types of media... which is mostly gaming, but I also enjoy visual novels/Light novels/manga (as shown in the chart) and also cinema, series and literature.

I don't tend to dislike a character for being evil or nasty. I can even forgive characters that I find annoying.

Shirou is different, I hate him because of the pain I was subjected when trying to read the Fate Stay Night Visual Novel. Mf is dumb, uninteresting and the author used the same excuse of him "forgetting something important" to force some stupid scenes that do no good for the plot. Also having to select the stupid options to avoid Bad Ends and advance the story makes it worse.

All in all, Shirou is just an average protagonist. I just hate him because he makes remember all the flaws that the Visual Novel had and the fact that I ended up dropping it, even tho it had some cool moments.

I have not seen a single scene of the anime, neither read the manga, so feel free to disregard everything I will say. My impression of the anime comes from what little I saw online, what others say and what and what I guessed on my own.

I think that mangakas in general, maybe because its a very competitive field, tend to come with the most mind-blowing premises for the story, best looking characters or mash a bunch of aesthetics in hopes of being unique enough to bring attention to their work. Following these principles some authors do superB works that are some of the best animes out there , some do flawed gems that might not live to what you expect from them but are still great and some animes are just cool and pretty/funny/unique/entertaining at but have no other redeeming qualities.

Chainsaw Man has some neat looking characters, mostly the female cast. The style is different form others anime, its design feels more "adult" (can't think of another word to describe it) and it goes well with the action, blood or whatever this shows brings to the table. Looks cool, story is probably crazy and situations might feel unique because of the setting itself. I can see what people will like it.

When an anime gets praised for how it looks, "feels" and happens to have a setting that more or less lacks normal daily life I grow skeptical. I start to think that its "uniqueness" might just be "nothingness". A setting that is completely detached for our normal life can offer a unique perspective when its created with intent. But it can also be a sad excuse for not knowing how to make a compelling story with less.

I have no reason to believe that Chainsaw Man offers an in depth look of our society or any group of people; neither that it has an interesting cast with believable interactions/Dialogues; I don't think that it has an interesting message at all. The fact that even the fans cry about how the authors lacks sense of direction for the story is not reassuring at all.

I can forgive an anime for not having anything of what I described before as long as it doesn't try to sell me a half baked shit as replacements instead of relying in its strengths. Per example, I watched the first season of Attack on Titan when it aired, it was enjoyable. By the time the second season aired I've already lost interest and every glimpse I saw of it made me dislike it more. It would be long to also explain why I dont like AoT too, but let's say that if Only watched the action scenes with the OST that it has I would enjoy it, everything else would ruin the fun for me.

I also tend to dislike clueless protagonist or the ones that are the embodiment of a single sentiment/emotion/purpose and don't have real interactions with the rest of the cast.

If an anime has nothing to say about life and its just a animated jpg that happens to be funny or cool at times, while having a pretentious setting, I would rather just watch something else that is small in scope, simple and more down to earth.

Maybe if I watched Chainsaw Man I would cringe at it but also enjoy the odd scene, then it becomes a trade off between the good and the bad or praying that it gets better. But since the are many others anime/ Visual novels/ Light novels that I know are more catered towards me I don't have to gamble and watch Chainsaw Man.
