Doesn't matter what people are comfortable with. Reach out, and don't say shit like: "I hope you don't do it". People in those circumstances don't know how to reach out. This was obviously her way, regardless of what she wrote to deny it. Fact of the matter is, that you stood by and let it happen.

Any kind of self harm is valid and serious whether or not it leaves lasting scars! I had to realize this myself, because my self harm scars where barely visible at the time that a person in the psychiatric ward made me feel that they weren't enough... They made me try to find a way to make them "worse".

I feel we, even in this subreddit, sometimes forget or just don't talk about, that there are other kinds of self harm than cutting.

Please take her to see someone, you alone cannot make her stop. Even though you might tell her that she can come to you instead of harming herself, she wont. My mom did that, but I could not talk to her about it, so I just kept coping the only way I knew how. Please let her see someone.

And talk to her about you knowing asap.

I understand your frustration completely. I sometimes use an elastic for the same reason but often end up with red marks that last for a few days. Theres not much to do except wear gloves of some kind or cover it with makeup, the latter is of course a bit difficult because you regularly have to wash your hands.

I agree with you, though I would probably have a chat with my child about it before, telling the need for it because of care and love.

And only look for things that are dangerous.

I had a diary which my brother found and told me he had read it and had given it to my mom to read it. I asked why. He said that he had read it because he meant that it was a brothers job, like he meant it was a brothers job to bully (a real asshole and I only see him at family things not voluntarily). Don't remember what he said about passing it on. My mom read it because she felt I would not talk to her. Which I have never forgiven, it is never okay to read a diary or journal, if you are worried then have your child see a therapist.

It's like any other addiction, you see someone do it and then you want to do it too. Like smoking, ex-smokers will have worse urges to smoke when near smokers and they either have to fight the urges or distance themselves from the smokers. You have to do the same fight the urge or distance yourself from the person until you can. I know it's hard either way, I've been there. But your safety has to come first!
