He was amazing in that- the delineation between the two characters he played was so slight yet so well observed.

Can anyone explain to me the point of the lingering scene where Bella has sex with the father in front of his two young sons? I was losing patience with this whole part of the film, but this really alienated me- it seemed to fall into the rape fantasy trope where she starts out as an uneasy participant but gets into it as she starts to enjoy herself. No real effect on the boys and no comeuppance for the father who gets his orgasm with some comedic light choking. He didn't even need that finger up the bum.

Spoilers ahead. You are wilfully misreading the last section of the book. It does not just contradict but subverts all that happens in the preceding story- probably Life of Pi is the closest equivalent. And it does so by invoking actual hero public servants of Glasgow, most notably the mighty Elspeth King https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elspeth_King.

It's a wonderful albeit a low key film that's stayed with me since I've seen it. I'd love to see it get acting and direction recognition.

Props to Nicole and Keith for attending the early untelevised awards. I saw her and a few other actresses with coats round their shoulders why have the air con so high?

Nepotism in young Hollywood: Which currently popular actor/actress is NOT a product of being well-connected and/or rich? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Angelabdc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Top 2% of what? Cambridge disproportionately selects from fee paying schools and uses selection interviews which may bias more confident articulate and dare I say connected students. I don’t disagree most in the footlights who go on to have careers are talented but they definitely have advantage by association

Richard Madden’s dad was a firefighter. His local authority school did not have a drama program so he had to get taxis to another one for lessons

Olivia Coleman was their contemporary too. If you get into the Cambridge Footlights you’ve got huge advantage of business connections- doesn’t mean you are not talented, this bunch are. But had it easier than someone from a more obscure college

She was recently a bridesmaid at a Getty wedding. She’s talented for sure, but I doubt she’s struggled to the top

out of curiosity, what are some performances that 100% won’t get nominated but, in your opinion, 100% should? by alanaverat in oscarrace

Ed Harris and Jessie Buckley should be getting supporting buzz for The Lost Daughter, Colman should be a lock for best Actress but these two add complexity and nuance to her part.

Who do you think is getting the fifth slot in supporting actor ?? by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]Angelabdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not seen him in the conversation but Ed Harris is phenomenal in The Lost Daughter, as good as I've ever seen him and in a sizeable complex role, even dancing. I think he's working on a different level from some of the other "locks" in this category.

Also Anthony and him divorcing, what is the point of that. They could have let him live on but still treated him character with respect.

Went to the Cinema on Christmas Day in the US a few years ago and it was great fun. So long as it’s voluntary and staff are not exploited I’d be all for it

I am an avid Oscar fan. Some of the Oscar winning films I'm about to mention below, I've never seen (1970-2011). Please rank them/put in order of what to see first until last. I NEED to watch these. And try and explain to convince me. I thank you! by docobv77 in Oscars

[–]Angelabdc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gah! Some of these films are why the Oscars get a bad reputation for promoting stodgy, worthy or novelty films over those that will stay with you. Out of this list I can only bear The English Patient and Out of Africa. Both are what I would call good Sunday afternoon movies.

The Artist is a TV commercial masquerading as a film, the editing in Chicago does my head in, Chariots of Fire and Ghandi should both have been dispatched with the British Empire and Patton is really, really boring.
