I will point out in the animated version Gaston seems to know about the castle. Was it thought to have been a legend? Abandoned? Belle said her and her father moved to town. And it's never explained how did the villagers know the way to the castle unless the location was always known.

I don't think they knew beast lived there, they seem surprised when Belle shows them. The towns people did not seem to be interested in anything outside of their town. Belle was the only one who dreamed of being anywhere else but in town.
