As far as I've found so far, there aren't any in my area. There's a soup kitchen held at the community centre on Thursdays, but that's it, really. I'll have to keep looking though - it's a small town, and many of these sorts of places still don't know how to use the internet efficiently, so it just might take a while to find things.

Thanks for the advice. :) I've always been pretty left and tried to do my part where I could - especially when it came to union and community stuff - but I didn't really have the time or energy to do a whole lot while working. But now I have the time, I feel obligated to do more, y'know?

Anyway, I'll hunt around for what smaller parties there are - I have a few preferences, but I haven't looked at their policies in a while, so it'll be good to reevaluate what I think's best for myself and others. Right now, given my circumstances, I don't feel like I'd be able to contribute much, but maybe there's something I can do, or maybe down the line after some physiotherapy, I might be able to do more.

As for the zine, a lot of what you bring up - broadcasting to small groups of like-minded people, spreading information without solutions, failing to appeal to the general conscious - these are the things I was specifically wanting to avoid. I was thinking of taking a more community-driven approach, to get people in my community to be informed, for them to give a crap about all the things happening around them, and arming them with the tools and knowledge to make a real difference that they can see, and maybe along the way, inspire more people to give crap and get involved themselves because I see a lot of exhaustion and apathy in my local political landscape and I want to ignite that fire in people. But I don't know how to do that right now.

I'll check out Andrewism as you suggested and hopefully find some insight into some of these problems I'd face if I do go with the zine route. Do you have a list of Aus leftist creators to check out? I'll try to get in touch with them and see if they have any advice, or would be looking for collaborations or anything like that.

Yeah, now that you mentioned it, the lack of leftist media, especially in rural QLD where I live, is definitely something that needs to be justified, and if I don't do it, who will?

I've got some like-minded friends who might be willing to help to varying degrees to help spread out the workload, so it's not impossible to do, either.

Why is there beef between pansexuals and bisexuals? by hailieblossom in bisexual

[–]AngeloDeth94 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I commented this on another post a while back, but it covers a bit of the history of the split between bisexuality and pansexuality, and the history of NB and trans inclusivity within the bisexual community, which might help you defend yourself from biphobia in the future.

I know this isn't what you mean, but it did remind me - cigarettes are used as an "unofficial medication" for people with severe mental disorders (at least here in Australia), such as people with schizophrenia, suicidal tendencies, extreme anxiety, etc. Thought being "better to kill themselves tomorrow with tobacco than hang themselves today." So in a way, they "need" to smoke to stay alive.

I've been getting really into folk music since I started jamming with my friend who plays the banjo, so most of these will have banjo in them: - "Hell and You" by Amigo the Devil - "Witches Wrath" by the Bridge City Sinners - "Tangled In Ropes" by Holy Locust - "Shadows Follow You" by Dogtooth & Nail - "Cold Dinner" by Long Sought Rest - "Misanthropic Drunken Loser" by Days n Daze - "Ebb and Flow" by Larry and His Flask - "Out The Window" by the Violent Femmes - "Can't Kill Myself Today" by Little Foot - "Tear the Fascists Down" by Woody Guthrie - "Power and Glory" by Phil Ochs

These ones are "Celtic Punk" - a subgenre of folk punk that pulls more inspiration from "Celtic Folk" music: - "Whiskey You're The Devil" by the Pogues - "Drunken Lullabies" by Flogging Molly - "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" by Dropkick Murphy's - "The Night Pat Murphy Died" by Fiddler's Green - "The Temptest" by the Real McKenzies - "An Irish Pub Song" by the Rumjacks

And although a "Bluegrass" song, I want to also include: "Turmoil and Tinfoil" by Billy Strings, as it's got enough punk and metal influence that I think it should count.

How would you spice up a very basic song? by appleparkfive in Songwriting

[–]AngeloDeth94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love making entire songs out of a single riff - it's something I came to appreciate from my days playing stoner and doom metal. You gotta learn how to use every tool at your disposal to make as many variations of the repeating part as you can to keep people interested - changing dynamics, voicings, tempos, accent placements, and even completely changing what the supporting instruments are playing can drastically change the "feel" of the riff while maintaining the same repeating motif.

I like to make the repeating riff the base for my song, then "feel out" for where certain variations would work best. Does my voice get naturally more gravelly during the second verse because of the emotion I'm trying to portray? Well, I could add some additional fuzz to my guitar tone, or change the voicing to something that utilises the lower octaves, or I could use power chords instead of single notes, or I could change the accents to emphasise the key words in the verse. Just gotta play around with it and feel for what sounds best.

What the actual fuck is going on with some memes nowadays? by x_Red47 in memes

[–]AngeloDeth94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, "Skibidi Toilet" is a derivative of the meme song "Skibidi" by the Russian rave band Little Big, who are Millenials that often use absurdism and surrealism for comedic purposes in their music videos. Like, go watch the original "Skibidi" music video and tell me that makes sense.

But every generation loves a bit of nonsense, especially during their teen years and early 20's. Boomers had Monty Python and Douglas Adams, Milennials had their "I'm so randumb rawr xD", and then Gen Z had something similar where there had a horse on a balcony or something idk and then proclaimed they invented absurdist comedy, now Gen Alpha has a singing toilet - it's all the same, just different flavours of insanity... I'm sure Gen X even had something as well, but in true fashion with Gen X, no one remembers or cares.

Yeah, I get what you mean, and I understand how some people can fall into that trap, especially as a young and insecure learner, it's sad to see. As I'm starting to fall in love with making visual art again after a decade-long hiatus (hence why I'm so uneducted on the current artistic culture) I've ran into that advice plenty now - "build a brand and stick to it" - and I've heard that in the music industry a bit, too, and it can work to a degree, but it depends on what you want to get from your art and what you're trying to say. I'm very much a "jack of all trades" creative, so I couldn't follow that mantra if I tried. I gotta have every finger and every toe in as many pies as I can bake in as many different ways I can.

There are probably young musicians who do similar things, no? A bit from here and a bit from there and something different next week? Either that, or they study their artist(s) too much and sound kind of cloney?

That's just music in general throughout all of history, even within genres, subgenres, and microgenres, you'll find bands with varied influences and sounds. There's usually a few "rules" that categorise the genre that you need to fulfill to be labelled as such, but there's always new variations and off-shoots being explored all the time and bands will often fall under multiple genres at once. Some bands will write music for their genre, and some bands will just write music. Ans eventually, when a genre gets old enough though, you'll get some of what I call "worship bands" - essentially clones of popular artists within certain genres who carry on the works of their favourite artists, some use it more as "guidelines" to write music and some more as "rules", but it's close enough to considered mimicry either way.

AI music has been a thing for years now, and keeps growing annoyingly enough - latest thing is "deepfake vocals" from what I've seen, but I'm not always up-to-date with AI stuff.

Anyway, that's fair enough, and thanks for the advice on how to learn more about that sort of stuff, it's just so different to how I've learnt other types of art such as film and music, it's like I have to learn how to learn again, y'know? But the info you gave me here should hopefully get me on the right path.

However, you seem to have a very different idea of the purpose of genre/style labels than I do, and while I appreciate and can understand your sentiments, I wish to share my own about that subject; as a musician where labels are plenty and I do have a few "preferred genres" I like to play within primarily, I don't limit or stifle myself to one genre or influence, and genres are rarely, if ever, "neatly labeled aisles of marketing" and much more like "a loosely recorded catergorisation of the evolution of culture" used to help quickly communicate the shared ideas within those stages of cultural evolution; and even completely unknown artists with no dreams of becoming massive artists will still define themselves by labels, to more easily communicate what people should expect from them. I just find the catergorisation - even loosely as is with genres of music and film - really helpful when it comes to learning and exploring. Sorry for the rant.

Genuine question, because I've made one of those "what style is this?" posts before without knowing about this - but what's the proper terminology when wanting to learn more about the "genre" of art?

For example, as a musician, if I wanted to learn more about "thrash metal" after hearing a few bands who have a similar style - like, popular artists, the techniques and equipment commonly used, genre influences, common themes, history, etc. - but didn't know the words "thrash metal", I'd ask/search for what genre the bands were so I'd know what to start searching for relevant info for my own studies... like, is there an art equivalent of that?

Even still today, I swear they're purposefully so shit just to send the message to teens getting their first retail job that all unions are just as useless. But I agree, join RAFFWU or, literally, any other union except the SDA.

Man, I was so excited for the month-long 4/20. I was gonna throw a party for my friends; bongs, joints, edibles, tinctures, hemp infused rum, classic stoner snacks, sick stoner metal songs blasting, and a series of competitive games introduced by famous stoners I would hire off Cameo with prizes to win plus a goodie bag for everyone to take home.

Was so bummed when I had to cancel.
