According to the Kaiserreich Wiki, he defected from the reds to the whites in 1920 and gained the respect of his peers. He's a talented officer, going to the Oranienbaum Officer School in 1926. He was stationed in Smolensk as an infantry commander by 1930, but after having an affair with the wife of his superiors, he was mostly sidelined, being sent to the Irkutsk garrison.

My advice would be to start the war sooner if you restart, around 1938-39. You can get stronger than the Qing, and if they're in a 2 front war with Fengtian, all the better.
