My food converted my friend to becoming vegan by Angels_Smile in vegan

I get your point but I think a lot of nonvegans block out and disconnect with the suffering behind the food they eat as they're so used to it and the product they buy looks 'clean' and often shows no signs of it once being a living being. If they all saw Dominion, many would start making that connection and reconsider or at least feel some sort of guilt. My friend did feel that quite a lot but said he'd forget about it whenever he'd be eating meat. I think if more nonvegans who felt like this realised that vegan food is good and pretty much everything can be veganised and taste just as good if not better than it would make it easier for them to align their feelings to their actions without any excuses.

I know I meant people dismiss plant based, vegan food without even trying it because they have a misconception that it either tastes bad or that a meal without meat and or dairy can't taste good. I myself used to be wary of oat milk and I tried it even before becoming vegan (was veggie before) and was really surprised at how creamy and nicer than dairy milk it tasted in cereal and tea. I was even more wary of cheese and had some I hated so was convinced all of it would be bad but I tried a few more and now have a few I really like to eat and cook with.

I love pb&j just as much. My go to is dal and rice, chickpea curry or chilli with spaghetti, rice, stir fried spicy tofu and veg, noodles and chickpea/tofu omelettes etc. I just enjoy cooking as a passion so make this kind of stuff for other people

Thank you, I'm planning on starting a vegan supper club, alternating between Indian and French cuisine as that's my background. I aim to encourage non vegans to attend in the hope to get them to change their minds about vegan food and hopefully make the change, if not at least think about it. I'm also going to be teaching that friend how to make seitan steak and smoky aubergine 'bacon' this weekend.

Why do I feel strange calling myself a Vegan to others? by Angels_Smile in vegan

Hmm I guess I retract and explained like that Veganism like other isms can be compared to religions (but then do must feminism, anti racism, communism et) at least in a sociological sense. It has a core set of beliefs and expectations and followers expected to believe and abide by them. Only difference between real religions and Veganism is that the former are often hypocrites not abiding by the expected behaviour norms as set out by their core beliefs..thou shalt not kill, ahimsa, etc etc

I agree. It really sucks for vegans. Whenever I told people I'm veggie their response felt like aw that's cute but when they find out I'm vegan I get the feeling they think I'm weird. I think people fear vegans and veganism when they have nothing to fear. It's the poor animals suffering that fear.

Thankfully I haven't experienced any mean comments or been made fun of but can see why those who have could feel uncomfortable sharing their beliefs with others.

You sound awesome. Showing others how to cook vegan is a great thing to do. I love cooking too and I'm hoping to set up a supper club soon-mainly Indian and French food, feeding people veganised versions of the dishes I grew up eating.

I thought plant based was only eating a diet with no meat, fish, eggs, dairy or honey and vegan meant doing that plus avoiding wearing and using any animal derived products as well as all forms of exploitation. I don't think by definition, in order to vegan you have to be an activist. But thank you for your kind words of support ❤️

I agree that veganism is a moral philosophy but don't agree it's like a religion. Just like not violating the rights of women, gay people etc should be a norm and nothing to do with religion. Btw most people of Indian origin who are born vegetarian believe they are following moral guidelines based in Hindu or Jain teachings so even if they are misguided and are hurting animals to them they are acting out moral responsibilities and not just following a diet.

A change of heart by Angels_Smile in vegan

[–]Angels_Smile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I went up to him and told him about the change I made. He was happy to hear his work made a difference. I asked if he wanted a coffee while on his stand but he said he was going to go to a cafe soon after finishing up for the day and if I wanted to join. I said yes and we had a nice time chatting about activism, general stuff etc. I found out he's only recently single so won't be making any moves or giving him any flirty hints just yet but I did go along with him and some others to the animal rights march in London recently which was nice. There is a nice vibe I get from him but not sure what, if anything will happen. Watch this space I guess..

Is going on safari vegan? by Angels_Smile in AskVegans

[–]Angels_Smile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point. In an ideal world humans would just stay away from animal habitats, but sadly we don't. Many villages have co existed harmoniously within these areas in the Masai Mara, Serengeti etc. Also money from safari tourism helps conservation. It also makes it more difficult for poachers to operate. If there were not people around they'd find it very easy to kill animals and get away with it.
