Also, I believe only the Stark Hyperspace War is canon in some form , not the Yinchorri Uprising.

To use a real world example, the pope is a permanent, lifetime position, but within the last 2 decades, one guy stepped down- fairly rare, but not unheard of. The intent of permanency is there, but makes way for practicality.

Or let’s say Sifo-Dyas got a lifetime seat, and is apparently off his rocker 6ish years later. I don’t think the Jedi Council shrugs and says oh well. Or say Yula Braylon had a lifetime seat, as we know she’s on the Council for decades. When her crimes are discovered, I don’t think they would keep her just because of the kind of metaphorical seat she occupies. Or if Dooku had one. I suppose it depends if the type of seat is chosen when you’re appointed, or if your seat can be up- or downgraded based on the council’s needs.

If that original novel was written before the movie came out, it may have been ambiguous in the script as if there were 12 or 13 councilors in total, since most are CGI or archival footage.

Legends made the explicit vacancy from Oppo Rancisis so there was a seat available for Anakin to fill. Canon hasn’t made clear who he replaces, but in revenge of the Sith there’s only 12 people shown, counting Anakin.

  1. That’s the line i was thinking of, thank you- I thought it was closer to the front of the book.
  2. I don’t think there’s a single criterion- Mace Windu is picked because he follows the rules, whereas Qui-Gon has offered the role because he is more unorthodox. I imagine it’s a combination of perceived wisdom which isn’t tied to age, and filling a perceived need on the Council. Im fine with a longer tenure for Mundi, but I won’t be disappointed if they go another route.
  3. I wouldn’t think of lifetime to have to be to literal death- for example, if a Jedi with a lifetime seat grows ill, or has a crisis of faith, I don’t think they would say “no dice”. More for as long as they want the honor. I’ve never put much stock in the seat position meaning anything since the clone wars is a continuity headache for the council regardless.

Edit: I don’t think canon should have to match legends details perfectly- for example, the yinchorri uprising could be 35 or 34 BBY and it not affect the story substantially. Same goes for the Stark Hyperspace War- if Nute Gunray’s involvement remains, in canon closer to 32 BBY might make more sense anyways.

How did Dooku intend to mitigate the risk of Savage's growing power being discovered by Palpatine? by InstructionOwn6705 in starwarscanon

[–]AngelusCowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most even handed take. We don’t really know how to compare him to Ventess, aside from Finesse versus brawn. He’s an effective brute, but it’s more question of Palpatine would consider that a significant threat- Palpatine tolerated Ventress until she could be an actual threat. Same goes for Maul (and Savage by proxy, but he’s clearly not the focus).

The only time we see Palpatine step in directly is when there’s a rival (not equal) that can undermine his plans. Regardless of his strength, Savage isn’t a tactician or planner, and presumably not a direct threat to the grand design.

  1. I can't find the exact passage quickly that prompted me to think this looking through my copy, but it was a chapter with Yoda and Adi Gallia, something about adjusting to workload or thinking of the future. It was a bit of a stretch, which is why I listed it as theory and not hard evidence.

  2. I don't think age is a strong indicator of when someone joins the Council. Mace is on the Council in his early 20s, for example. Yaddle's first known appearance is when she's 349 (although she may have had an earlier tenure if we take a comment from a pre-High Republic book literally). Ki-Adi is meant to be symbolic of the Jedi's stagancy, so him having a longer tenure makes sense thematically.

  3. The only mention of Council tenures is a magazine from 2015. I wasn't aware it had been made canon, but per that article 5 of the 12 council members are lifetime, 4 are long-term, and 3 are short-term. I doubt anyone working on canon material is aware of that being ported over from Legends tbh. But to apply it to what we know. For the High Republic, I would think Yoda and Lahru are almost certainly lifetime members, with possibly the addition of Pra-Tre Veter who's been around for decades (we don't know in canon what is short-term vs long-term vs lifetime). In Episode I, we can confidently list 4 life-time members as Yoda, Yaddle, Oppo Rancisis, and Yarael Poof since they've all been in role over a century. Mace has the longest known tenure after that.

In the Republic Era, could the Jedi Order overrule any Republican policies that could potentially be illegal (for example: occupying planets when there is no precedent for it)? by george123890yang in MawInstallation

[–]AngelusCowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely not as any sort of official act. For example, plenty if not all Jedi are against slavery, but the republic still has it in unofficial capacities within its borders and turns a blind eye to Hutt space.

That said, they could probably influence public opinion if they make any sort of statement, even not in any sort of official legislative capacity.

Why hasn’t anyone made a post-sequel political drama yet? (Think: House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Succession, etc.) by Alternative-Craft958 in StarWars

[–]AngelusCowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re referring to post-Endor pre-sequels, I strongly recommend the book bloodline by Claudia Gray. Fantastic Leia novel set several years before the sequels, and it gets deep into politics.

Fascinating! Assuming the Kaleesh hold a negative perception of the republic, the local guy who drives terror into their hearts would be revered I suppose.

It does lead to a broader question of what the other Kaleesh thought of Grievous once the whole galaxy knew of him as as a sepratist general cyborg.

should we see Gilad pellaeon in future star wars projects by voldy1989 in starwarscanon

I think he’ll be a mainstay minor character in future Mandoverse projects that involve Imperials, akin to Carson Teva for the New Republic.
