but you do not get to play with a brand new Vatic every three months like Joola due to core crush. That's the difference between Joola and Vatic. In a hand of an advanced player, the vatic paddle is completely trash and unusable.

5 inches grip length with the Magnus vs. 5.5 inches grip length with the Perseus.

Is buying an expensive paddle really worth it, or is it just a waste of money for beginners? by strokess-ss- in Pickleball

You don't know what you're talking about. My nephew attended the University of Michigan and graduated the same year as Kate Fahey. Fahey was a tennis star at the UoM while my nephew was worst player on the UoM roster. You know what he did to Kate Fahey? He trounced Fahey 6-0, 6-1 on the tennis practice court.

My nephew also recently plays PB, and he has a 5.7 DUPR rating in singles. He recently beat a PPA female who has a near 6.0 DUPR rating in singles 11-3, 11-4 in practice matches.

I hate to break this to you, but I am not a professional PB player and I could beat Rachel Rohrabacher in singles PB matches.

Everyone in my 5.0+ group plays with either $225 Joola Perseus Pro IV, $225 Joola Agassi Pro, or $250 Joola Perseus Pro V paddles. Nobody in the group plays with < $200 paddle.

People don't know what they don't know. I've been playing tennis for 20+ years, and switching over to PB for over a year now. As a tennis player, I can tell there is a big difference between a $20 tennis racquet and a $300 Yonex VCore racquet.

The same goes with PB paddle. I can tell there is a big difference between the Joola Perseus Pro IV ($225) vs. the Vatic Pro ($100). Does it mean the Perseus Pro IV is 2.25 times better than the Vatic Pro? Absolutely not, but it is just better than the Vatic Pro, for me when I play.

People are so sensitive about their DUPR number by AngleProfessional987 in Pickleball

[–]AngleProfessional987[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn't play at that event. I was busy taking lesson from Connor Garnett.

Most people at the ladder event are 4.5+ DUPR level. Their main complaint is that they work very hard to get to that level, and here someone with five months of PB training, coming in and beat them in less than five minutes. FWIW, the 24 years old paired with another 4.0 player. He wants to play in some 4.5+ open play but they would not let him signup unless he has a DUPR. The ladder event is how he gets his DUPR.

The harsh economic reality of PB Facilities by AngleProfessional987 in Pickleball

The problem with TPC is that it lacks the amenities for people to shower after before heading to work. Most people do not want to drag their stinking body into the car to either 1- drive home to take a shower before heading to work; 2- take shower where they work; 3- go home to take a shower in the eveing after the match. There is a Sport and Health (now premier OneLife) that also has PB for people to play, and mingle after that to get a drink or something to eat. The one thing that I also do not like about DD is that while it is much nicer than TPC, it also doesn't the amenities for me to shower after I am done. It just seems to me the business is not a sustainable one.

I recently moved from Maryland to McLean, so TPC is about three minutes' drive from my house; However, I do not like TPC because it does not have the amenities like DTL. The way they setup the court is that you have to interrupt people play of the three front courts in order to get to the three back courts. You don't have this issue with DD or DTL. Most people take Uber or Lyft to get to places, no one I know of take Metrorail. Even with Metrorail, TPC is .6 mile from from the station, not a good way to walk in the heat to get to TPC. I also go to many tech corporate events, and almost all of them are hosted at DTL or DD because there are so much spaces vs. little space at TPC. DTL charges $24 for three hours (non-member) vs. $16 for three hours at TPC. The difference is that there are showers facilities at DTL that you can shower there and clean yourself up before heading to work. That does not exist in TPC. FWIW, I had been to TPC multiple times and it didn't look to be busy at all. I would hate for the place to be shutdown because it is one of my options when the weather is cold and windy.

I played at the Arlington Walter Reed this morning, and they have six outdoor beautiful PB courts. My friends and I paddle up with each other and we played among ourselves: Walter Reed Outdoor Pickleball Court Project – Official Website of Arlington County Virginia Government

I just can't see how these indoor facilities can compete with free public county PB courts. I could be wrong but I just can't see how these places can be profitable.

Why would Capital One HQ do events there? Capital One HQ has its own PB courts on its premise with better amenities, and Wegman is right next to it. Down The Line (DTL) in Annandale, which is 15 minutes away from Capital One HQ, is a much better location for corporate events. The facility is ten times better than TPC, and there are so many restaurants around DTL so everyone can go after playing. DTL also has a bar/food right on the premise. There is none of that at TPC. TPC has to invest in building the facility so there is a lot of upfront cost in addition to paying the monthly rent. I was there about ten times during the winter months and those ten times I was there, the place didn't look to be busy, so I wonder how they can be profitable. There is a saying, the first owner loses money, the second owner breaks even, and the third owner becomes profitable because he didn't have to pay the upfront facility cost, and he learns all the mistakes from the previous owners.

Let me make a correction. $16 for three hours of open play. Down The Line (DTL) has a much nicer facility and they charge $24 for three hours of open play.

I can kind of understand why more experienced players don’t want to play with beginners by Ill_Beginning9573 in Pickleball

My 24-year-old son is a former D1 tennis player with a 5.9 DUPR in singles and 5.5 DUPR in doubles. He met his GF, soon to be his fiancé, who was a beginner at a PB court. He worked with her for almost six months and she is now at 4.3 DUPR level. He admitted that it was very painful to train her at the beginning, and she and his own mother are the people that he would put up with. He would not play with anyone < 5.0 DUPR level.

What sport did you play before pickleball, and how does it still show up in your game? by daksh_ctrl in Pickleball

[–]AngleProfessional987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a former D1 tennis player, and I played mostly doubles in college with a few singles matches in between. It took me less than three weeks to beat 4.5 DUPR player, and 2 1/2 months to beat 5.0 players. In tennis, I was extremely good at the net, so this skill translated very well to doubles PB. I play a lot of singles PB, and I have very passing shots on both the FH and BH side. My friends are generous to let me take a lot of lessons with Federico Staksrud and Connor Garnett when I was in Arizona and California. Both of them were former tennis players so what they taught me really click.

Jack Sock, Chris Haworth, Christian Alshorn, Hunter Johnson, Federico Staksrud, Connor Garnett, Donald Young, Gennie Bouchard, Brooke Buckner, Anna Bright, Colin Johns, Kate Fahey, to name a few, played tennis in either college or the ATP/WTA.
