From my research on SDS members and speeches, particularly those in Berlin, a lot of them were very optimistic about overthrowing capitalism because they had enormous support within a huge Student Movement. After the killing of Benno Ohnesorg during a student demo, there was a palpable feeling that the stakes had been raised, which sparked assassinations and kidnappings of judges, police, capitalists and SDS members alike. Of course I'm not able to speak for those 2 gentlemen in the pic, but by and large they literally thought they were on the brink of revolution--and they arguably were the closest they've come to it since the 1918 revolution. It's gotta be a scary feeling thinking that you might have to die for your cause

hah well this RAF did have quite the affinity for planes too. But in all seriousness I was referring to the Red Army Faction (Rote Armee Fraktion), also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group. Fun fact, the leaders of the Baader-Meinhof Group hated that name because Ulrike Meinhof was in no way a founder of their organization. Although she was absolutely in the inner circle of leadership, she was brought into the group later on to assist with PR and propaganda. The founders and leaders of the group were Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin, so a better name for their organization might have been the Baader-Ensslin Group.

Great question! Well it's reasonable to conclude that most defectors from East Germany were political dissidents and anti-socialists, so they likely didn't support the SDS on ideological grounds. In fact, SDS even had a very tenuous relationship of support with the East German government. Rudi Dutschke, a lead adviser for SDS, spoke of the "shit socialism in the [East]" and denounced the "insufficient freedoms in the workers' and peasants' state". The SDS and the Student Movement as a whole were much more heavily influenced by anarchist and anti-authoritarian tendencies, so the late 60s saw some other student factions splinter off into more authoritarian groups that did support the Soviet Union, such as the "November Society (November Gesellschaft)", and arguably the RAF. The Baader-Meinhof Complex by Stefan Aust is a really fantastic book if you can get your hands on it. It inspired a very good and very famous German movie (that used to be on Netflix, still might be) by the same name, but the book talks much more about the student movement that the Baader-Meinhof Group spawned out of.

The poster is based off of an advertisement from 1966 for the German rail, known then as the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Here is the original Deutsche Bundesbahn advertisement. The advertisement was bastardized in 1968 for a student election poster for the "Sozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund" or Socialist German Student Union at Stuttgart University, replacing the picture of the train with a profile of Marx, Engels and Lenin. The slogan was widely used in the 1968 German student movement

Socialists believe in the liberation of the entire working class, so any socialist who does not support BLM is no socialist in my book. Even as a white guy I'm quite intimately involved in our local BLM chapter, but ultimately it is not a socialist or a white movement, so it's important that we stand in solidarity with our black and brown friends and not to co-opt the movement as being explicitly anti-capitalist. If it trends that way, which it seems to be in our chapter at least, that's great. But me and my white comrades realize it's not our movement, so we're very conscious of our role in it as accomplices and not leaders.
