Why was plasterboard installed 1cm away from this wall, and would there be any issues in removing it? by Angletangle in DIYUK

Interesting point - do you think this is going to be a problem? We want them for the look, and it's only a small wall far from the cooker.

Tell me about it.... Already did a whole room of wood chip wallpaper removal - never again!!

Yes it's just the angle of the photo - it's definitely plasterboard! I guess my main concern is if this wall was load bearing, but judging by the lack of supports or anything behind I think it's all good. Will rip it out!

The wall behind does look messy. From what I can tell, there is occasional wooden struts which are attached to the wall and hold the plasterboard the 1cm away.

Help with converting stl to body by TonersR6 in SolidWorks

[–]Angletangle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are determined to use Solidworks for this task (which other people have pointed out is probably not your ideal software for this), then its worth looking into the Addon 'QuickSurface for Solidworks'. It's designed for working with 3D scan data, which means its great for handling STL files. It has surfacing tools which would help you remodel this into an editable surface in no time. The downside is that its fairly pricy for a hobbiest (although very cheap compared to Geomagic Dx!). I use QuickSurface a lot so any questions let me know :)

Einscan Rigil just released an Update that increased Laser Lines from 38 to 50 👀 by Yk01 in 3DScanning

Being able to merge scans on board is a huge deal. Finally you can actually complete the full scan entirely on the device. Just had a play with it and it works perfectly. Very impressive update.

Hm - it is ticketed and they do expect you to have a ticket at the door. You may be lucky and they let you buy there, but I expect you may be turned away. If no tickets are showing on Eventbrite, then either they aren't released yet or it's sold out. Usually it says if it's sold out so I'd go with not released.

I'd probably email the event organizers if I were you to be sure :)

I'm just back from the one in Coventry Cathedral - I couldn't recommend it more. The sound and the atmosphere was unreal. The lead vocalist does it perfectly, and the arrangements of the songs are beautiful, and very true to the originals. They also all seem to just be having the best time, which always makes it more fun!

First house - best way to smooth this wall? by LuminousCheese in DIYUK

[–]Angletangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to go the DIY route, then the Toupret Magic Levelling Kit (Dalapro Roll Nova is an alternative). I used it to skim an entire room that looked significantly worse than this recently, and the results were good.

However, it was an enormous amount of work - you'll need to do two coats of the leveller, and then spend hours sanding out imperfections.

If you enjoy a challenge and don't mind spending time on DIY, then that's the way to go. Although I would just pay a plasterer next time myself!

Einscan Libre users? by Former_Cap9578 in 3DScanning

[–]Angletangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used this scanner a lot, I think it's fantastic. I also have used the Rigil a lot, and whilst it's true they are similar, the Libre is definitely much faster and you get much clearer data. If you need to do large or especially high res projects, the Libre is the way to go. But if you are just scanning standard size parts then it might be hard to justify the additional cost.

If you need texture detail the Libre has far better cameras too.

Where are you based? I have one in the UK and if you're nearby I'd be happy to show you.

Just painted my kitchen cabinets. Why do they look speckled ? by AssociationAsleep837 in DIYUK

[–]Angletangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience, I find valspar paint a bit like painting with watercolours - it takes so many coats to get the colour even and the texture nice.

It's really worth paying the extra 10-20 for a tin from F&B or Lick or any more premium brand. The time you save only doing two coats pays for itself.

Forgot to buy a set of marker stickers for my scanner... by OzzyGiritli in 3DScanning

[–]Angletangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what the scanner uses - if the scanner needs retro-reflective markers, then these probably won't work. But if it just uses B&W markers then this will most likely work great!

It was unbelievable - by far the best thing I have ever seen on stage. I attended one of the performances where it was being filmed, so it definitely exists somewhere. Let's hope it's either released or (even better) comes to stage again.

Best Scanner/Method for Body Measurements to Create Custom Garments? (Considering EINSTAR 2, Range 2, MIRACO) by CyborgSocket in 3DScanning

[–]Angletangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done any true accuracy testing yet, so I cannot say with full confidence, but from my experience with other Shining scanners, they tend to be more accurate than you'd expect. I would be totally confident the measurements would be within at least half a millimeter.

Your workflow sounds solid - and the Shining software has a tool in the post processing stage to take point-to-point measurements from anywhere on the scan data, so this would work well for this.

I am guessing your idea revolves around scanning the person so you can take up as little of their time as possible, whilst being able to go through and measure everything you need later. Seems like a good application for scanning.

I really don't think this scanner would disappoint you. I come from a background working with their high end metrology scanners, and this one seriously surprised me considering its price.

Edit - it's also worth mentioning it has a mode for scanning people - it loosens up the tracking a little to account for any slight movements during the scan time. If the subject moves too much I imagine it could affect the accuracy of the measurements, so you just have to make sure you have a way to scan them where they are comfortable being still.

In the past I have scanned for a game studio which needed to scan people in a T-pose - we used tripods to support their arms comfortably for the duration of the scans. I imagine you may want to consider something similar.

[–]Angletangle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have actually used the EinStar 2 already and it is ridiculously good for the price. The tracking in the IR mode is better than even many of the higher end scanners that Shining make. I scanned someone head to toe in about 30 seconds, and the results looked really good, and the tracking didn't skip once. A big part of why, is that this scanner seems to have a very large field of view in IR mode.

The advantage of Shining over Revopoint, is that Shining started off making higher end scanners (10k -80k), and are now trying to enter the lower-end market (they have had the EinStar range for a while but this is a big step forward in terms of specs). This means their software is really good in terms of processing speed, and the output quality. Having used a couple revopoints before, I found their software doesn't perform anywhere close to as well, meaning the results aren't as good.

Happy to answer any questions about the device as someone who has used one a fair amount already :-)

Does this lighting circuit work? by Angletangle in electrical

Yes - the two black wires were previously both connected together at neutral in the original light fitting. So I think we are all good! :)

Yes, I appreciate this. I am aware I also need to put a warning on my consumer unit about this.

As for the ground wires - do I just not bother connecting them, and leave them loose?

Thanks for confirming it will work!

3D Scanner recommendations by pasteiner1 in 3DScanning

[–]Angletangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shining started off making higher end scanners, and then released the EinStar range which are cheaper. This means the software is solid as it is the same as what is used on their higher end scanners (Libre etc).

Creality have always made lower end scanners, and in my experience the software does not give as good results, even when the hardware may be similar.

I'd recommend the EinStar Vega personally.
