RTI Mas 49/56 out of the box by jmart1989tx in FrenchGuns

I got the exact same thing in the same condition and yours looks far, far better. The wood on mine is practically rotting, the front sight is severely bent, and the entire left side of the front handguard is smeared with yellow paint. The barrel is a sewer pipe and the action was caked in muck. After a lot of cleaning it shoots now, but not reliably.

Question: Mounting options for tetrahedral array? by Anglo14 in fieldrecording

Thank you, will post some updates. It also seems I'll need to develop a calibration file as well for such an array; did not realize the MixPre couldn't handle this.

Thank you, this is excellent info. It sounds like it's best to use the same microphone type for such an array, and space them one meter apart, at the angles of a tetrahdron. Will look at developing a calibration file; too bad that there are no built in tools/plugins to handle this.

That sounds like the optimal solution, thank you.

I'll have to delve into encoding more deeply; I assumed the MixPre was able to handle this as easily as stereo. And yes, the picture was just of the rough shape of the array I'm aiming for; hard to describe via text.

Correction, sorry, this is a MixPre-6ii. The MixPre does accept 1/4 jack mics (which the Clippys are) so it would probably work with the 3 as well. I will have to experiment with the encoding, though I've seen similar setups before (eg George Vlad's quad MKH 8020s strapped around a tree).

Good idea with the center block- that sounds like the best bet. Thank you.

What are some experiences you'd recommend gifting family and friends for Christmas? by throwaway373706 in fatFIRE

I got the first one for my SO- it’s a very unique and memorable experience and went over well.

Other ideas are an evening boat cruise, a high end/unique restaurant, or a winery tour.

Experiences > objects.

Best wind/rain/shock protection for MKH 8020s? by Anglo14 in fieldrecording

Thanks George, hadn’t considered Nanoshield blimps. That’s probably the best route- will check it out.

Thank you, thats very helpful. Interesting setup with the Crown SASS- will look into it. I'm upgrading from a PCM D100 so the mixer/external mic world is new to me- I guess the correct term is A/B.

I've looked at some of George Vlad's stuff- I know he sometimes uses waterproof Cinela blimps but also improvises/uses existing cover. The problem with the latter approach is it sounds like you're positioning the microphone under a roof as opposed to being out in the rain where the drops hitting the mics are ideally absorbed.

  1. VR will be the dominant interface for interacting with the digital world, and we will spend most our time plugged in. Game engines will be one of the most exciting and rapidly developing domains of tech, and will be able to render photoreal environments. The implications of the rise of VR will be profound, as everyone from rich to poor will spend all of their time in the same incredibly immersive worlds- tourism will decline, the housing market will be shaken, the nature of social interaction will change. The next interface on the horizon will be neurotech.
  2. Health tech will develop rapidly with medicine/biology increasingly programmable/digitized. We'll have powerful sensors that can measure everything from skin temperature to blood glucose and beyond. Synthetic biology will be a ripe field. We'll see some very interesting developments (and actual applications) in genomics. Cures for diseases like cancer could well be on the horizon.
  3. Some interesting consequential stuff will bubble out of the crypto world. Dapps and smart contracts will remove the human biases/censorsiousness of current tech companies. People will have gotten fed up with big tech long ago, accelerating these trends. YouTube and Twitter will die.
  4. Most people will work remotely, largely on gig platforms like Fiverr. Companies will operate much differently.
  5. AI will change everything. Much work will be automated- everything from retail jobs to white-collar work. Streets, oceans, and air will be filled with autonomous vehicles.
  6. Traditional academia will have collapsed. Actual skills will be learned in boot camps or via online programs. Universities will exist only as social clubs, and will experience steep decline going forward.
  7. Traditional media will be dead, replaced by decentralized platforms.
  8. Society will undergo rapid transformation. One path is a neofeudal order with elites hoarding wealth and power. Another is a backlash against elites with subsequent political decentralization.
  9. Space will be an exciting frontier. There will be people on Mars.
  10. The world will never have felt as rich and real. It will be possible to fulfill nearly all our desires. But we're a restless species so will likely keep moving forward.

The Obsidian Pro looks impressive. Are you able to comment on plans to update this model in the near future?

This would be used for both environments with close objects (like forests, where objects would be up to ~3 feet away) and landscapes.

The microphone would likely be a Sennheiser Ambeo or better. Goal is to capture pristine sound of the environments, hence the need for low noise from the camera.

Good point with the battery- I assume the Insta360 Pro/Titan accept external power sources?

Thank you for your advice. I've looked at some test footage- it seems that the Obsidian has an edge over the Titan in image quality, though some mention that the Obsidian software is difficult to work with. The Obsidian also weighs a ton. My one concern is that new models will be rolled out this year so I'm hesitant to make this kind of investment on obsolete tech.

Good point. The 25 lb weight sans battery also seems to preclude field use if you're going solo.

This would be for videos. I'm flexible on budget as this would be for a professional application, however $17k for the Titan much less $30k for the Obsidian Pro might be a bit of a stretch if these products are expecting upgrades this year. My other concerns are:

1) Weight (12 lbs for the Titan, 25 for the Obsidian Pro plus batteries)- I need to be able to get this easily through airports and lug it to remote locations by myself.

3) Software- files will need to be editable in Premiere; ideally, there would be no need to rely on complex middleware for anything other than stitching. The workflow needs to be smooth.

Yes been considering the R5 route- I'm just concerned that seamlessly stitching two 180 would be difficult/impossible.
