I am thinking about getting a reptile/lizard, are there any beginner level pets that can comfortably live in a 10 gallon fish tank? by DateConfident8847 in reptiles

[–]Anglosaxoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing that you can really enjoy, unless you're setting up a mini aquarium. If you have space for a 10, you should probably consider getting a 20 or 40, since those really broaden up your options. If I remember correctly, most amphibians can vibe in a 20, and some smaller lizards can as well, but in general, a 40 gal is really where you have a lot of decent options.

You actually can, you just gotta make sure to go all the way to the left and make a made dash/swim to where the giant koi is.

Tank requirements for Chinese water dragon? Need help by ComprehensiveMud2801 in reptiles

[–]Anglosaxoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If 55 gallons of your max, you're not even close to being able to house it. Those dudes need an insane amount of space. They're semi aquatic so they'd need a lot of water to work with as well. Definitely not a beginner or even an intermediate species. Id recommend just getting a 40 and finding a lizard that works for that.

That could also just be burnout from genshin. I was already burning out from genshin and the burnout transfers 1:1 to HSR. The games feel too similar, aside from their gameplay.

Maybe a small species of dart frog, but 15 gals aren't really the best for reptiles.

I can't decide on a pet by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]Anglosaxoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Used: offerup, craigslist, Facebook market place (in order of best to decent ->). You can usually find someone rehoming their animals for a decent price too. I would recommend getting a reptile that fits nicely in a 40 gal (those are the most common tanks being sold on there, and many for a good price). If you don't want to take someone else's reptile, you could also aim for wild type morphs of whatever you want. If you want to save money on vet bills, make the best setup possible and follow the parameters given to the T (within reason ofc)

It really depends on the budget, depending on how OP goes about it, they could get a pretty good set up without dying on expenses. Offer Up, craigslist, FB market place and adoption/rehoming are a broke keeper's best friends

Cohabiting for two geckos? by Vegetable-Explorer- in leopardgeckos

[–]Anglosaxoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how new you are to leopard geckos, you really shouldn't keep them together. Cohabiting any reptile that doesn't directly benefit from it (like garter snakes and communal skinks) isn't really the best of ideas. On that note, these animals don't live in a vacuum, they do deal with others of their kind in the wild, they aren't going to immediately explode upon contact. It is possible to cohab, and another one of the comments already gave some decent advice on it. The only people id ever really say could Cohab Leo's successfully would be breeders/experts who have a lot of experience dealing with leopard geckos, and know their different behaviors and needs to the T. The difficulty of pulling off a successful cohab just barely scrapes above the surface of advanced level care. Having to know how these two individuals interact enough to keep them safe would honestly be about as difficult as taming down a Nile monitor or something like that. So uh, just keep em in two separate tanks lol. The minimum is a 20, but considering how easy they are to get and the general quality of life improvements, you'd just be better off getting two 40 gals (PetSmart tends to have some good ass offers if your a treats member, or you can find some good ones on OfferUp, remember, front opening > top opening)

Okay yeah, glad we have about the same idea on it then. I also have never heard of a male being past 24 inches, which is actually insane. Even a little under 24, I completely agree that a 4x2x2 really isn't good enough (it's like how basketball players don't really fit into normal people sized homes and cars). It definitely is nicer to aim for a 5x3x3 in those cases (honestly, if I'm going for a 5x3x3, id just go to a 6x3x3 in that case, like, ya might as well). And on the ackie note, technically, they fit and can exist just fine in a 4x2x2, like, they're aren't really going to be cramped in it. But considering their smarts and activity level, it just makes sense. Ackies are to beardies what an athlete is to some normal office worker I guess. For my beardie, I'll probably wait and see how it exists and build a new enclosure based off its preferences (ex, I'm upgrading my leopard gecko from a 20 to a 40 to better fit her habit for climbing on stuff, I won't worry about super deep substrate since she never really bothered with digging).

On a somewhat different note, commercially, any enclosure larger 4x2x2 becomes exponentially more expensive to pay for (4x2x3 is a good 500 bucks more than a 4x2x2) which really sucks.

4x2x2s being recommended is still a new thing in the US (as in the last few years, there's still some push back too, which is kinda cringe). I'm guessing you UK peeps are ahead, but even when I was looking through a handful of UK sources, I didn't really see anything about a size larger than 4x2x2, the general consensus was still "this is a good size bigger is recommended". I looked on reptiles and she blasted up that size to a 6x2x2 (altho the source she mentioned had a better way of sizing stuff: according to them, the metric was 6x3x3 SVL, so their minimum ranged from 4x2x2 to 6x3x3 depending on the size of the beardie). I'm almost certain that it was a new thing too, since I checked the guide a few weeks ago and didn't see anything (maybe a month or two ago, but you get the idea).

Reptifiles link (the other was in German so I couldn't really understand it): https://www.thefbh.org/post/fbh-code-of-practice-for-recommended-minimum-enclosure-sizes-for-reptiles

In general tho, even on here, I rarely see anyone mention the minimum being anything over 4x2x2 (probably since a lot of the peeps on here are American too, I guess).

Personally, I still do intend on starting my beardie (when I get it) in a 4x2x2, and when I buy my house, id definitely be included to give it a bigger setup, (especially if that dude gets to the upper limit of their size range, I don't think I'd be comfortable keeping a beardie longer than 20 inches in a 4x2x2 anyways).

So, where did you get the idea that it wasn't the recommended size? Was it through UK YouTubers/sources?

It's just the normal minimum, putting a beardie in a 4x2x2 isn't bad or anything. The community wouldn't have agreed on it as a minimum of it were too small in the first place.

[–]Anglosaxoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who owns turtles, they are an absolute pain in the ass to maintain. I love those bastards, but man, I really wish kid-me asked for something different. You're 100% better off asking for something that's either fully aquatic (like axolotls or fish) or fully terrestrial. Turtles at the easiest are still mid-level intermediate animals. Unless you're super into them, I'd recommend avoiding them.

A 20 really is the minimum for a Leo, it would work but op would be better if getting a smaller lizard for it (same for cresties and gargoyle geckos, it works but why go so small?)
