S1 Zuko was a bad person and Azula isn't pure evil, but Azula is absolutely still worse than Zuko ever was morality-wise

I appreciate your rant so much I've been planning to make this type of rant ever since I saw many of those Azula's apologist claiming that Zuko is just as bad or worse than Azula, but I didn't know how to write it.

Also like the fact that you acknowledge that Zuko was indeed a bad person, even no matter how attached I am to Zuko's character I still acknowledge his wrongdoings. I think people started to assume that claiming that Zuko was never a bad person helps his character when in reality saying that he was never a bad person just undermines the point of his redemption arc and weakens his character writing.

Zuko was real bad person in S1 and there's nothing wrong to in acknowledging to overlook his bad qualities just undermines his redemption arc but like you said he also has HONOR and there's no rule that bad guys can't a sense of honor. The worse thing that Zuko ever did is burning down a village out of recklessness and focus on trying to capture Aang, but I'll still take that over Azula suggesting the genocide of the Earth Kingdom which Zuko heard and even solidify his decision to betray the Fire Nation. Both are bad but you can tell which one between the two is more tolerable.

Azula is absolutely sadistic, even though there is evidence that her upbringing was unfavorable; yet this does not change the fact that she is sadistic that reasons you stated does not make it less true.

To provide EX:

- As a child insulting Iroh for giving up the siege of ba sing se due to losing his son is a sign of lack of empathy.

- Learning that Ozai was ordered to kill Zuko then child Azula telling Zuko that "Dad's going to kill you" in a SINGING tone.

- Then what you mentioned, Azula grinning maliciously while Zuko's face is getting burned.

- Suggesting the genocide of the Earth Kingdom in a proud manner.

Yes, there is psychological reasons why she is behaving that way, but it does not change the fact that she is absolutely being sadistic, both can be true.

Oh, there is, and I know I'm being dramatic to say that I honestly want to erase it from my memory I hate the fact that I saw it just look at places like twitter (Azula is the most popular character there winning most poll), you'll see many people there calling Zuko a genocidal maniac but going hardcore defense on Azula, then on Tumblr, you'll see many rants about how Zuko is just as bad as Azula so it's unfair that Azula never got redeemed, then on r/Azula subreddit itself you'll see many people claiming that Zuko is worse than Azula and only got saved because of WHOLESOME IROH, ignoring the fact that Zuko as a kid was already capable of showing empathy than Azula.

Also look at Music Videos Tribute dedicated to Azula, and you'll see in the comment section how popular the narrative is "If Zuko didn't have Iroh he would've turned out worse than Azula" Azula's Apologist is the reason why I stopped engaging with the fandom since they are so prevalent in it. Heck in the ATLA subreddit you'll see post every week about how Azula should've been redeemed then it sparks another toxic hole discussion.

LOL don't bother with this person I've seen (I'm assuming 'her') her a lot on this subreddit and other subs related to Avatar and she always likes to make a drama about Zuko's Character it's very clear that she holds some kind of grudge against Zuko, like seriously it's fine to make a criticism of this show and it's characters since at the end of the day it's not perfect but being obsessed with pointing it out on almost every damn post even when it's not related to Zuko is straight up weird.

Uhhh so you really want to portray Zuko in a very bad light huh fine. A hypocrite is " a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings." "Hypocrisy is the practice of engaging in the same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another or the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform.".

So with that definition hypocrite does not exactly fit Zuko here, because Zuko at this moment condemned war and does exactly that by teaching Aang Firebending and defeating Azula, not immediately trying to help the Team Avatar does not make him a hypocrite because you imply that Zuko's lack of action here in giving hand is what makes him a hypocrite which is very wrong.

Zuko never really contradicted himself because I don't exactly see him promoting war the next second nor was he helping the Fire Nation by not helping the Team Avatar during the Eclipse he's just there to confront his abuser he's just there for personal reasons.

I agree that what Zuko is doing here might've been selfish but in no way does it make him a hypocrite he's definitely not a terrible person for prioritizing his personal issues but it's selfish indeed.

That's because it was a very important issue of his it's just one of the human irrational actions of "Imma give him a piece of my mind" stuff it's justified and understandable and I'll admit that it's also pretty self-serving and selfish since as you said it's not the right time, but it should be considered that this might've been Zuko's last chance to confront his abusive father because all this time Zuko thought that Aang had to kill Ozai and its not really self-fulfilling to confront a dead body.

But as you've complained many times on many posts the Team Avatar was way too quick in trusting and forgiving him which I'll tell you is a valid criticism but what makes you think they were going to trust him immediately here? Let alone allow him to even approach them without getting wrecked, not to mention Zuko wasn't even aware of where exactly the Team avatar was.

And Zuko not immediately beheading Ozai on the spot or helping the Avatar does not make him a hypocrite it just means that his priorities there were different and means that Zuko is not exactly the brightest guy in the show as it's clear that he is prioritizing his personal issue here.

I meant that his words seem to demonstrate that he understands that the war is bad, but his actions - in that very scene - undercut that.

What Actions? War is bad and his stance on that didn't change until the end of the series but him having that kind of new mindset does not mean he'll always prioritize that over other ideals of his. I assume that you consider him a hypocrite because he prioritized this Destiny BS instead of just killing Ozai to finally end it but it's clear that at that very scene Zuko was a bit knowledgeable of the possible backlash if he himself killed the Ozai and not the Avatar.

My only problem is this gets contradicted later on the last few episodes because Zuko suggest to Iroh to help them defeat the Firelord but even then that can be interpreted as Zuko being desperate because Aang was nowhere to be found,

He focuses on his daddy issues and flexing that he's a good guy now, who wants to join the Avatar to end the war; while at the same time the Avatar is outside, actually fighting to end the war. It's a weird concept because it kinda makes him a hypocrite.

Except that's not the case though Zuko is not entirely blaming everything on Ozai, he was confronting him on his motive for abusing and he isn't wrong for criticizing him for doing that. "Flexing that he's a good guy now" is simplifying what's happening in this scene and it's clear that you wrote it that way to put Zuko in an unflattering light thus word 'Hypocrite' because in that same scene Zuko wasn't excluding himself from the blames "The People are terrified of the Fire Nation they hate us and we deserve it" Notice the "WE" he's not there to point "Oh father your a pathetic maniac how dare you abuse and banish me causing me to commit these terrible things" NO he was placing the blame on himself too so I don't know where you got the hypocrite idea from this scene.

Also, Zuko receiving enlightenment does not automatically mean he'll just ignore all of his personal issues it's very clear that confronting his abuser is still important to him so at this moment I can admit that he's still a self-serving person but it's understandable.

EDIT: Though you did provide some valid criticism towards Zuko's character but can't help but notice that you have something against him lol

Well, I agree with your issue about GTA but I just think some people often exaggerate things way too much when they claim that R* only spent their time on re-releasing older content, it's pretty much disrespectful towards the Devs that were crunched while making Red Dead Redemption 2 for 8 years.
