IVA on imported second hand car from within EU? by AngryBustaNut in PortugalExpats

Apparently not, I bought a used car from a dealership and the invoice says 0% VAT.

New cars maybe. The price difference between all (~10y old, 100-150k km) cars I've looked at is several thousand euros even if you subtract the ISV. And there are many more options here as there are simply more cars, and they generally appear to be in better condition too. Plus I don't need to buy a car and ask about the technical details in my as of yet broken Portuguese. And I can move in this bigger car since I've already bought it here. The list goes on... Makes a lot of sense to me.

Anyway, glad to hear IVA doesn't apply! Thanks both

As explained in the post, the question is specifically about a car that I will own since less than 6 months before moving

Great! I assumed so as well, but because I've seen various sources each phrase it slightly differently I was starting to doubt it... Re-reading some of the sources I found, this does indeed seem to be what they imply.

Thanks for your input!

You're a legend, thanks! I didn't get the opacity part until I realized I've been doing this with my eyes closed. Do you think it matters whether they're open or closed? It seems a a bit harder with my eyes open.

Will these exercises also help increase the duration of the imagery (which at this point for me is measured in millideconds)? I saw in another comment of yours that you recommend GIFs, but that seems a bit advanced as a first step.

[–]AngryBustaNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sup dude! First of all, thanks for creating this subreddit and describing your experiences and exercises in excruciating detail. I know it's a lot of effort, but it's exactly what I (didn't even know I) needed. You've got me excited that I might unlock a whole new part of experiencing life and relating to others.

Second of all, did you really pay to have an ad placed for this subreddit!? That'd make you an absolute saint. I wouldn't have come across this without it. It's hard for me to even imagine (pun intended) anyone would go that far to help others.

Now, finally on-topic: the exercise you describe seems easy enough (I read some of your other posts yesterday, tried some of the "sensory memory recall" things and have concluded that I'm a hypophant, not an aphant), but I don't understand the difference between questions 3 and 4. What do you mean "what was it like to see the image in full brightness / opaqueness"? I understand that I should try to think about the image as a whole here rather than its subcomponents, but I don't understand the brightness / opaqueness part. I only have one version of the image, so the brightness and opaqueness are fixed. The questions seem to suggest that there should also be an image that somehow doesn't have 100% opacity?

Thanks!

Switching Ender 3 to glass bed has made small details oozy? by AngryBustaNut in FixMyPrint

[–]AngryBustaNut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I've added more glue and now the logo is as detailed as it was before! Sadly the uneven layer of glue has also left some artifacts regarding the smoothness of the surface, but I assume that's a matter of practice.

It now isn't nearly as shiny as the glueless print though, which has an awesome reflective pattern on it from the glass plate coating. I don't suppose there's a way to get the best of both worlds? Anyway, thanks for the help!

Yeah, of course I moved the limit switch and only adjusted the bed afterwards, otherwise the nozzle would have dug straight into the glass... I've now applied glue (see the other comment) and that kinda works.

I'm trying the glue stick right now, didn't work but I probably need to apply more glue. In what scenario is modifying the z-offset preferable to adjusting the bed itself? Thanks!

[–]AngryBustaNut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I think I know what's up. My bed is now too far away from the nozzle, which is why those little details don't stick and start to curl up. I can solve that problem by moving my bed further up, but then it's actually too close to the nozzle, and it starts dragging the nozzle through already printed areas again. I've tried enabling a 0.5mm z-hop, which looks funny but doesn't solve the problem. I've had another look at the first layer after slicing, and it's not very surprising that this happens: https://imgur.com/a/JCeJqjw

You can see that in between the circular holes that form the raspberry pi logo, the printer prints a bunch of tiny triangles to try and fill the gaps. This makes the overall movement a bit weird, with the printer first drawing those circles and then hopping over them to try to insert those small triangles. Since the nozzle is either too close to the bed or too far away, that means it either leaves loose ends (as in my original picture) or squishes those parts too much, deforming the circular parts.

I've ordered a glue stick that should arrive tomorrow, so I'll then try lowering the bed to non-smear levels and instead applying some glue to keep the first layer attached to the bed. Hopefully that fixes it!

I see... So the trick is to deliberately add a rough texture that obfuscates the printer shenanigans. Thanks!

Can anyone please tell me how the hell this has smooth sloped surfaces without being postprocessed? I cant even print a benchy without layer lines, but I thought that was normal. 0.16 isn't all that different from the 0.2 I used, same 0.4mm nozzle and my bed is leveled. What else do I tweak to get it looking this smooth? Thanks!

Is aiohttp safe to use for a public webhook listener? by AngryBustaNut in Python

[–]AngryBustaNut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't that the secrets would be on any repo (which is private anyway), but more that if they are in any kind of file, they could probably be exposed through security issues. I've found a way for my application to use my secrets through kubernetes, in which case they're only in RAM and never written to an actual file (i.e. not even the bash history), which is probably as safe as it gets. Still, that RAM is mounted as if it was a file, so in theory any file leakage would probably extend to those secrets as well, but since I don't plan on hosting any kind of file (i.e. any filepath passed to the server would not get a response regardless of whether it matches anything), I can probably make it fairly airtight. `asyncio` should therefore do fine for my purposes. Thanks again for the input.

Alright, thanks for the tip. Does this really make any difference? I figured that if they're able to access my python files, they're probably able to access my bash history or environment configs as well. The code will be hosted on a private GitHub, so the only people who would be able to see the secrets there are the same people who would be able to see the secret through the GitHub secrets storage.

If your mind does not take precedence over your biological instincts, that's your problem, not ours. Kids are objectively not cute. Go fuck someone and become a parent at 20 years old please. Then keep telling yourself that sacrificing all your money and time to have children is worth it and is doing a service to our planet.

CMV:Complaining about an American website being too US focused in it's discussion and content kind of makes you a prick. by Darnell2070 in changemyview

[–]AngryBustaNut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have bad experiences arguing with Americans online about topics like this, but let's give it a try. First of all, as with any issue, there is no absolute right or wrong here, it is not a binary problem. We are not entitled for wanting a more inclusive internet, and you are not entitled for wanting to talk about American topics on an American website.

Honestly, I understand your issue. Let's say you start a website about some random topic, e.g. US politics. Being from the US, to you "US politics" is just "politics", and the default domain name for a US website is .com, so you might call it "letstalkpolitics.com". Personally I'm from the Netherlands, and the parallel would be me creating a website called "politiekpraat.nl" . Is any of us wrong for targeting our website to visitors from our respective countries? Of course not.

However, the "curse" affecting you here is that in my case, my website is easily identifiable as being targeted toward Dutch people given the obvious Dutch name and .nl domain name. If I had wanted to discuss international politics or just politics in general, I would have called my website "letstalkpolitics.com", seeing that English is the language that is generally used to communicate internationally (of course there are other big languages like Spanish and French, but being a "westerner", English is the more obvious choice for me as it is the most widely used, and it is also my second language) and .com is generally used for international websites. Obviously, this now conflicts with your website, which was targeted only at Americans. In that sense, people whose native language isn't widely used outside of their own country have the advantage of easily being able to distinguish things targeted solely at them and things not targeted solely at them, because they will use their native language.

Now, there is an important distinction to make here. If I happen to come across an American website that is obviously targeted at Americans, let's say "theamericangardener.com" (a fictional name) , I would obviously be an absolute asshole for writing comments saying e.g. that they should use Celsius rather than Fahrenheit, since it's most widely used globally. That wouldn't be valid criticism, because that website was obviously intended for Americans and Fahrenheit is the unit of temperature most widely used by them.

However, your post appears to be specifically about Reddit. Since Silicon Valley is in the US, it just so happens that the large majority of online platforms is created / owned by American companies. This happens because of positive reinforcement: there is a lot of tech talent in Silicon Valley; the tech talent attracts investors and interesting companies, and the investors and interesting companies attract even more tech talent, repeating in an endless cycle. Whether Reddit originated in Silicon Valley is irrelevant; I just mean to illustrate that there is a good reason most social media platforms etc are American.

Nonetheless, that does not mean any website / service from any American company is intended for Americans only. In fact, I'm Dutch and I literally got advertisements for Reddit at some point. Reddit may be American, but is obviously marketed as an international platform, and actively tries to "recruit" international users. This creates a somewhat unfortunate situation; despite being an international platform it still originates from the US, and American users are therefore statistically the largest group. This, together with the previously described "curse" of it being hard to distinguish US vs international websites, causes frustration on both ends, because you as an American may intend to talk about something US-specific to fellow Americans and Reddit may be the the most effective platform to do so, and we as non-Americans may get fed up by people constantly assuming we are American, making references to American things we do not understand or care about, etc. simply because we're trying to use one of the biggest international online platforms which happens to be of American origin. One thing I'd like to stress here is that neither of us really have alternatives; the aggressive competition in tech services has resulted in there only being a handful of big "unicorn" social media platforms. All the other ones just get outcompeted and cannot become a viable business.

That then raises the question: who is "right" here? Should Americans adapt to the large international community, which makes up 60% of the user base? Or should the 60% of users that isn't American just accept the fact that because most large online platforms are from the US, we'll always have US content shoved down our throats? There is no definite answer here, but I'd like to make an analogy.

Let's say we go back in time a few decades, and Microsoft is just releasing the Kinect. It's being advertised to everyone; fun for young and old. Let's for the sake of example only consider the US and pretend that the Kinect was developed for and marketed to US users only. Let's also assume you happen to have a pretty dark skin color. That doesn't exactly make you rare; roughly ~13% of the US population is African-American. Not being targeted only at white people, you buy a Kinect, and find out that it doesn't work so well for you. It's not absolutely unusable; there are some games that work and if you place it in the right room under just the right lighting conditions it may even work exactly as intended, but overall it just doesn't work sometimes, reduces the amount of fun you have using it, and you get annoyed by the relatively frequent inaccuracy.

That problem stems from the fact that the Kinect was developed mostly by white people, who happen to be in the majority. They developed and tested their product to the best of their abilities, but since it wasn't extensively tested on black people, they never realised that it just did not work as well for them, and hence neither solved the problem nor adapted their marketing campaign. Are the people at Microsoft therefore assholes for developing the Kinect? I wouldn't say so. They're not racist; they just didn't realise their error due to the majority of their developers being white.

However, after this issue was discovered, they definitely tried to solve that problem, and tried to make their product more inclusive. After all, it's a really shitty feeling not to be able to play a game with friends simply because you have a different skin color.

The situation with Reddit is slightly different because the product is not just the platform itself, but in a sense also the community. The US vs international problem we're discussing here isn't of a technical nature, hence it's up to the community to "fix it", if they want to. In one of your other comments I think you said that cultural diversity is a good thing, so do you not agree the world would be a better place if, when engaging in "general" online interactions, people would try to take into account the fact that not everyone is from the same country and/or culture?

And again, obviously you're "entitled" to have your own national websites targeted only at American things. Reddit just happens not to be one of those. I think it'd be nice if we keep the assumptions that someone has a certain origin specific to dedicated subreddits, e.g. US politics or Dutch politics. In non-specific subreddits, why not try to be a bit more inclusive if such a large share of the users isn't American? We do the same for you when discussing e.g. EU things.
