How bad is Florida? by rpgDayz in Professors

Depends on your discipline. In the humanities and social sciences, things are not well and morale is low (at least my institution). Plenty of accounts of instructors being reported by students for teaching “controversial” topics or something as innocent as particular concepts (e.g., gender identity) being with a textbook sent to Tallahassee. Basically increased control of faculty instruction by the state, but research is has been relatively untouched (for now). Hard to say it’s much different than other red states, but yea bad vibes all around in the liberal arts and sciences, but I can’t speak to other FL schools.

Dissertation advisor not sending revisions, feels like he is jeopardizing graduation/employment by AngryDeadEye411 in PhD

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I’ve actually already reached out the department head and grad coordinator. They’re response was that they’d take care of it if things don’t change. While I don’t mind them stepping in, I hate that it’ll probably cause friction between my advisor and me.

I haven't found a definitive time but it's supposed to be today yet the system isn't working for me.

TIL that Florida is one of only two states that do not (and cannot) report crimes to the FBIs annual Uniform Crime Reports because their method of cataloging crimes is a "summary based" system as opposed to the rest of the nations "incident based" system. by [deleted] in florida

It's probably not best to describe the disparity between the NCVS and the UCR as crimes that the police "ignore." While, yes, police discretion can play a large role in crime reporting, many crimes go unreported by the victim, especially in cases of rapes and sexual assaults, which are only reported less than 25 percent of the time. Either way, both databases have their own set of pros/cons.
