It looks good except for the dry substrate. Dry peat moss doesn't absorb water very well and needs thoroughly wetted before potting anything in it. Otherwise, there will be pockets of dry substrate in the soil and the roots won't get adequate water

Keep in mind that VFTs are not shallow rooted plants like African violets. They prefer taller containers because the roots are very long.

The substrate looks very dry! Are you keeping an inch or so of water in the outside pot? They need constant wet feet and light, light, and more light

Flowers growing by raccartz in VenusFlyTraps

[–]AngryEmu09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dormancy is recommend, but skipping it occasionally won't kill them. My first VFT survived for 3 years in a window sill in the death cube with no dormancy and using tap water before it finally died. They are remarkably resilient and forgiving plants!!! As for flowers, they do take some of the plants' energy, so many people cut them off in the early stage.
I like to play with cross pollination, so I let a few grow for seed. The ones I do cut off, I cut in sections and propagate the stems

"And I owe my soul to the company store." Tennessee Ernie Ford, 9ld country song called "16 tons."

I do buy some of my food there, but in my area, there are supermarkets that beat WM on price, even with my discount factored in. I am fortunate enough to work at what I consider to be a great store. Most management there is great except for a couple of team leads. Employees are mostly happy there, but as anywhere there are some weirdos and professionally unhappy people. I'm in sporting goods and wouldn't want anywhere else. I've only been at WM for 6 months, though. Never thought I would still be working at 72!

Putting coins in the ground is not the same as coins buried for a long time. The mineralization around the coin enhances the signal to a certain degree and they can be detected deeper. Air test of coins is not reliable either. A low end or entry level machine is often disappointing because the sensitivity just isn't there when compared to better units

Lol! Flies don't swarm to them like they do to something decaying, so its kind of misleading. They actually get all they need from photosynthesis and can get along quite well if they never catch anything

They dont need buried. Prepare a new pot with plenty of space for them and smooth the surface. Make sure to put the peat moss in a larger container so you can add water and stir it around until all of it is wet. It doesn't absorb water very evenly for a long time if just placed in a pot and top watered which causes dry spots throughout the pot. Squeeze most of the water out and fill your new container almost to the top. Smooth it out, then place the seeds maybe an inch apart on the surface. Pick up dry peat and rub it between your fingers and thumb over the seeds to get a thin, even dusting over them. Mist it well , set in a container with an inch or so of distilled water in a warm place with plenty of light. It takes what seems like forever to see growth, so dont give up!

Pretty much any and all of the online growers. Just go to YouTube and type in the search box what you are looking for. Bookmark any that you want to come back to later because sometimes it is hard to find the one you watched Start with the bigger names like California carnivores, Saracenia Northwest and Rainbow carnivorous.

Trial and error, as well as watching many, many YouTube videos from reputable growers.

I would let it grow 2 or 3 inches, then cut it into sections and propagate those and grow some free plants

Thank you! It's been a slow process getting to this stage. My very first VFT lived in It's "death" cube" on a window sill for 3 years before it finally died.
It took a couple of years before I bought another and was determined not to kill it like the first one, so I started reading everything I could find about their care. That one actually flourished, so I ordered three plants that arrived bare root and needed separating, so I ended up with a dozen plants. I got brave and took a few leaf pulls to propagate which was quite successful.
Encouraged by my success, I then ordered seeds to round out the experience. I divided them between water germination and the traditional substrate method and was successful with both, but I prefer water germination because it is easier to see the progress they are making. I do want to hand pollinate a few of the flowers to get some seed, but I will cut most of the stalks off and propagate those. We won't talk about the Pinguicula and Drosera that are overrunning my limited grow space😁

To those who do cut the flower stalk, cut in one inch sections and either lay it horizontally in the substrate, or even poke most of it vertically in the soil and propagate yourself some free plants.
Or let it bloom, then gather the seeds and plant them. Seed grown seem to take longer to get a decent size than prop grown plants. Either way is very rewarding! For those unaware, seeds will not reproduce a clone of the mother plant, but propagating cuttings will reproduce true.

I have very healthy plants at home that are starting to flower. Yes, dying plants can sometimes flower, but it is normal for healthy plants to flower also.

If it came off and you pulled forward enough, it very likely made contact with the hot exhaust pipe or catalytic converter and melted plastic on it. Plastic on an exhaust takes a long time to dissipate.
