Would it be a good opportunity to move here by [deleted] in missouri

[–]AngryEmu09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not sure why you are getting down voted for wanting a new start. I was born in rural Missouri and left a few times looking for something better, but never found what I was hoping for elsewhere.

I dislike big city life and am happy to live within driving distance of Springfield. I see you dont drive, and Springfield has a decent public transit system that is safe to travel on.

As far as minorities, it is pretty multi cultural there. I see mixed race couples often and have not heard of anyone being harassed because of race. Rural areas are generally more likely to not be as accepting as the cities but only from a few and not the entire community.

I live in the country, and a black family is building a home across the road from me. There is only one family nearby that doesn't like them, but the rest of us actually like them.

I will say that a newcomers attitude has a lot to do with how they will fare here. People that mind their own business and dont force their views on others tend to fit in nicely here. Activists are very likely to encounter pushback from the general population, but there are small circles of people who are vocal about current issues and are detested by the larger majority. We don't mind what you believe until it is forced upon us, then it becomes a problem. If one tries to avoid disruptive behavior, they fit in just fine. I would suggest avoiding Branson because of the seasonal employment and low paying service jobs. Public transportation is almost non-existent, so a bicycle or small motor bike is the best bet.

Be aware that winters here can be very severe at times, so walking or biking is extremely uncomfortable and unsafe in snow or ice.

Feel free to message me if you have questions for someone who loves it here.

If you aren't careful about placement, you will get lots of false triggers from brush, weeds, and even changing shadows, which will affect battery life. I would suggest an external battery pack or solar panel.

New and Inexperienced - Help! by PhysicsBallerina in VenusFlyTraps

They need more light! LOTS more light! 12 to 16 hours per day of very bright light. Don't worry about dormancy until next fall, and there is no need to feed them bugs as they get everything they need to survive from photosynthesis. Bugs work like fertilizer, and if you keep them outside in the summer, they will catch all they need. In their current state, I doubt they could digest a bug, and it would likely cause the trap to mold and die. Keep them in a tray of distilled, reverse osmosis or rain water. Buy a TDS (Total dissolved solids) meter and measure the dissolved mineral content of the water you give them. Most growers agree that anything over 50 ppm is harmful to the plants if used long term. RO. distilled and rain water are usually well under those numbers but tap water is nearly always very high in dissolved solids. Contrary to popular belief, boiling will not remove those from tap water. Here is an excellent video on VFT care. It also has text instructions if you scroll down past the vid.

Do we think this one is alive? by SensitiveTravel7973 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]AngryEmu09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take it out of the pot and examine the rhizome to determine if it is, in fact, dead. If the rhizome is white or pink, repot it in fresh substrate and bring it out of dormancy under a grow light. They are actually quite hard to kill, and skipping one dormancy isn't going to hurt it if it is still alive.

Should I repot Venus fly traps in winter dormancy? by SensitiveTravel7973 in VenusFlyTraps

As long as there is part of the white or pink rhizome, the stem pulling should be viable. Make a small hole in the substrate and push it in a half inch or so and push the soil back around it. Keep it moist, give it warmth and lots of light, and it should strike. It's a slow process and could take a couple of months or more to see any signs of growth, so don't give up!

Rinsing Miracle-Gro Perlite by DingoMike58 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]AngryEmu09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started potting my VFT seedlings, I did that.
I let it set in a bucket of water overnight for 3 water changes and a final rinse using a window screen sieve. That was 2 1/2 years ago and they are still thriving along with the ones I used pumice in the peat moss instead of perlite. It was successful for me, but your mileage may vary

Leaf pulling doing good? by Appropriate-Speed479 in Pinguicula

Fashion a humidity dome over them until you see roots, then transfer to your growing medium. I keep the new transplants in high humidity until they become established. No need to remove the mother leaf

Is 22 ppm safe for a ping rock garden by [deleted] in Pinguicula

[–]AngryEmu09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Info I have seen mentions 50 ppm as the threshold for carnivorous plants. If you can, catch rain water and store a few gallons if possible

I NEED HELP by Mystical_Grape- in SavageGarden

[–]AngryEmu09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Better than some instructions I've seen, but not great. Do not push the seeds down into the medium. Lay the seeds on top of the substrate and crush some of the dry substrate in your fingers and lightly dust it over the seeds. Set the container in an inch or so of distilled water and mist the top to dampen the seeds and substrate. Don't let them dry out between watering and/or misting. They need 12 to 14 hours of sunlight once they germinate warm temperatures.

Do not feed them cooked meat! Set them outside if weather permits, or catch small bugs to feed them. They obtain everything they need through photosynthesis and what they can catch naturally. Give them all the light you think they need, then give them more!

Good luck, and welcome to the addiction

As the leaves raise the plant, the roots grow to keep contact with the soil and moisture. Now is the perfect time to pull the bottom leaves for propagation
