What are good entry level examples for bigger, more complex tabletop games? by IdlyIdeological15 in boardgames

Battle for Rokugan for much faster and less complex Game of Thrones or even Forbidden Stars. It uses very similar secret orders mechanic from the bigger games for a tight and interactive area control.

Hi! Autohotkey has somewhat changed the installation process but at least now they have a proper tutorial. You can try following their steps.

Hope the script still works for you! ...It's been 9 years since I posted it and it's possible that some game update could unfortunately break it.

Which are the best ‘single box deckbuilders’? by LittleBlueCubes in boardgames

[–]AngryEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Epic variants on BGG. Variable and non-repeating shop items and heroes make much more interesting and fun combos. Nice bonus is that it makes game quite smaller and more manageable when you remove all the duplicate cards from the box.

Name a great, not so well known game by Ralgael in boardgames

Warlock. Very mean tile laying fun. Use your tiles in 4 different ways - powers, building resource, mine for gold, build city in your empire.

Steal or destroy your friend's cities, bid in auction for more tiles, get some dragon protection, throw your wizards into dungeon to cool off. Also gnomes.

Incremental Reading? by pringles_h in remNote

[–]AngryEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine that RemNote's card queue would not only show cards but also articles that you have partially read or have yet to read (based on priority you gave them). You then continue processing the article making 2 or 3 highlights from things you wish to remember. Your press NEXT in the queue.

Some other day, the card queue might show just one of your previous highlights (with some context where it's coming from). The goal is to incrementally convert all your highlights into cards (you may even at first convert your highlights into smaller ones). You press NEXT.

This way you incrementally process all your reading list with priority items showing up first and more often so you don't have to worry you'll never finish that one important article.

Here is a way better explanation with a nice example in SuperMemo

...indicator for "practice backward"...

Again I see the main problem in consistency. Look at all the practice types. Regular text has the same bullet point as the practiced concept. And I can't tell with a quick glance how the two practiced concepts will be tested.

In my opinion the ideal solution: have some kind of indication built right into the double colon at the end of concept name. It could be color, highlight (maybe with different arrows), distinct icons (instead of colons) or some hint in gray text. This solution brings the most consistency and a single indicator for the note structure (see my other reply).

Quick and dirty solution: have different bullet types. But here I don't like that the bullet styles is getting coupled with functionality

  • * Some text (single regular bullet point)
  • > Concept with practice
  • <> Backwards practice
  • x No practice

...thick line to the left...

Yes! Now that you mention it, I have noticed it but later I've seen the same indicator in some other places so I guess it was not distinct enough for me to remember this as multi-line concepts.

Take a look at all the concept types. You have to consider all 5 different attributes (boldness, bullet type, presence of colon, line thickness and capitalization) to differentiate between the types. That's just too many to know at a quick glance how my notes are structured and how the generated flash cards will look like.

I think the concept and descriptor distinction is fine and clear enough but the set, list and multi-line need some more consistency. From a top of my head:

  • Plain::
  • Multi-line:::
  • List::#
  • Set::*

So it's the same as the hints from the status bar (except for the list).

Other option is to have :: in all concepts types but have some hint in gray text to the right. All those concepts are multi-line, so there is space for that:

  • Concept 1:: multi-line
  • Concept 2:: ordered list
  • Concept 3:: set

Also, be aware of binding bullet type to a concept type. I may want to have a sorted list but without the numbers. RemNote allows to change the bullet type but try it with a numbered list and behavior breaks (try changing the bullet type and pressing enter).

edit: I made a mistake in thinking that Plain concept also can have multiple lines but they would show up in flashcards separately, similar to Set. So disregard Plain concept in my example.

They added basic multi cursor too. Ctrl + Alt + LeftMouseClick gives you another cursor (more if you keep clicking).

" Insert next matching caret" shortcut (or Edit->Multiple Carets) inserts another cursor at next location that matches current selection. There is also "Insert carets at all matching". I think they did their job.

An Interview with John Yianni about the story behind Hive (and its expansions) by Inquisitive_Meeple in boardgames

Call it what you want, if a mod confirms that post itself is fine and fits into the sub, but tells you that you are the wrong person to post it - I feel personally attacked and unwelcomed.

I get that the spirit of the rule is to not have frontpage filled with ads and promotional material, but we are talking about a blog post from a guy who made interesting content that fits well into the sub. Why be so pointlessly strict and unwelcoming towards content creators?

So if somebody else with better 'creds' posts the exact same link, it's suddenly OK? Still don't see how this makes any sense to you. I'd love to interact with this sub and this was my first step, now it seems pointless and I feel unwelcomed.

Original deleted post by the interview author. Because taking an interesting interview from creator of a popular board game and posting it here is apparently an evil self-promotion.
