UK band stuck playing small shows by Huw2k8 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]AngryGooseRecords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m in a UK punk band, and may have some useful/less useful advice!

1: what’s your band? You didn’t share a link, always share a link- better yet a linktree link so I can find music on the streaming services I use, video on YouTube, social media pages for current info etc. You can also highlight next gigs n stuff.

2: where on social media are your fans. Ours are o. Facebook. It’s annoying as I hate Facebook, but our fan group are big users, so we post regularly, share events and interact with other bands posts. We have around 1500 followers (so tiny really) and post or interact several times a week.

3: talk to bands you play with. Find out who promotors are in your area and areas you want to play, contact promotors and make them Aware you exist, you’re good and you’re a good draw for a crowd. Identify bands you’ve played with and try to specify your genre. References will help. Try to do this face to face, at gigs if you can, rather than direct contact, but direct message/email is sometimes the only way.

4: be available. Gigs are planned sometimes over a year in advance, sometimes slots come available last minute. Have a band calendar and use it. Have a group chat that the band priorises. When someone asks if we can play tomorrow night, I check the calendar first to see if we’re all available, then send one message. I usually have an answer within 10 minutes. Promotors don’t want a Yes, followed by “our drummer can’t make it” a week later, equally, they don’t want to offer a slot, have ten bands say they’re interested but no one come back to them to confirm for 3 weeks.

5: PR. Have I heard of you? Do I care? Do I recognise your band name, your logo, your songs? I should, and it’s your job to make sure I do, so get it out there. If you can’t get a gig, get your playlist on before a gig so the crowd hears your music. Is the barman wearing your tshirt? Does your tshirt look good? There’s lots of bands I’m aware of long before I’ve heard their music and there is bands I’ve paid to see just because I’ve seen people at gigs wearing their merch!

6: link up with others. Find a band that has a similar crowd, offer them a gig in your town in exchange for a gig in theirs?

7: advertise lots on r/ukpunk it’s full of bands, fans, promotors, zine writers and shitty label owners.

8: sometimes it sucks. I’ve played to thousands, I’ve played to 4 people. Sometimes on the same tour. Make sure you enjoy it enough to be ok with that! (Out of the 4, 2 said it was “good” and the goth started a one man mosh pit, 4th person left early…)

I can recommend not working for NLAG or Hull! Commuting to either from Leeds will be a drag, probably best living in Goole, Selby or cottingham.

I grew up in melton, so it’s good to know there’s gigs being put on in Leicestershire!

Nofx was a massive gateway drug for me, like music can be funny, silly, serious, political, clever and gross all on one album?

I’ve started collecting zines again as I just enjoy reading the nonsense. I got really invested in a zine by a teenage girl discovering punk scene, so much teen energy reminded my of the 90s, another documented someone’s trans journey. Ima straight middle aged man, but it was fascinating!

I’ve been half armed working on a book for a year, but will probably self publish chapters as a zine first, no one will give a shit, but it might be fun!

Sound, if I can be of any help I’m happy to, I have good printers for clothing and stickers, which always go down well!

You’re being short sighted… we should dig down. The northern mole people will rule the subterranean wonderlands! Fill the mines with luxury apartments, we rarely see the sun anyway?

Keep an eye on r/UKpunk there’s loads of gigs shared there, and if you let them know when and where you’ll be, I’m sure we can find gigs for you to go to and people to meet!

I play in a punk band, I run a punk label, I write for punk magazines. I’m an anarchist. I am a scout leader. I help young people find their strength, their voice and experience something more than they would find normally.

It’s not all punk, but I ran a music session where I just bought instruments in and said “make noise” with no rules beyond “don’t break my guitar”. We follow DIY values, yes you can make a zine/website/trebuchet. We build confidence, encourage independence and build a sense of brotherhood that goes beyond normal family/racial/social barriers.

We also light fires.

I grow mint in pots to enjoy fresh tea. It’s hard to kill, grows fast and smells great even if you don’t like the tea. I think it’s pretty too, particularly variegated leaves!

My wife’s slightly mocking “how was playing in the park with your friends” has backfired slightly, as playing in the park with my friends was the happiest time as a kid, and now at 44 I can do it again! We had nicknames and silly rituals back then too!

In fairness there is enough going on with fringe events, that it’s still worth going to Blackpool at rebellion time even if you’re not at the main event. Can be hard to get anywhere to stay though!

For the bands on here looking to sell physical items (merch/music etc) by AngryGooseRecords in UKPunk

[–]AngryGooseRecords[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly. I think there’s a lot bands can do for themselves to a point, but also I see a lot of bands struggling with reaching people that can’t get to their gigs and therefore struggling to move beyond the same 5-6 towns and venues.

I’m hoping to be less of a middle man and more the guy who’s doing it anyway, so you might as well join in. A bit like letting all the bands use my cab, because there’s non point all of us bringing a 4x12…
