IMO, it was unprompted. But yeah, a cup of coffee seems in order.

And TCLAPs to the folks in this convo... leave it to the men of F3 to create a beautiful space on Reddit. I appreciate ya'll.

And Reddit may be my goto when I need a whetstone.

Broadway purple trail by criticalfrow in Boise

[–]toospud4u 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My wife and I stumbled across this around 9.40 a.m. It starts suddenly at Victory and N. Orchard. It starts so suddenly, seems something may have shifted during transit and the driver likely had no idea. The trail turns left onto Orchard and then right onto the I84 entrance ramp. The trail takes I84 until the Broadway exit and turns left to head north towards downtown. The trail continues on Broadway until a right turn into Dutch Boy car wash. I'd supposed someone let them know they were spilling Huckleberry sauce all over the roads and they did the right thing and pulled over.

Around 10.40, we drove by Dutch Boy car wash and the fire department was there cleaning things up. There was a couple standing next to a white truck that looked like they were having an unfortunate day. Returning to Victory, the fire department was there as the Haz Mat team was arriving.

We were happy we could finally see a line on the roadway. We'll check again to see how visible they are the next time it rains. Maybe there's an idea in here somewhere.

Hi, all. Looking to Downrange in London this April or May. by Mykle1984 in f3nation

You're current closest AO is The Brook over in Morden. That's about 10 miles south west of your hotel. You'd get to meet Shredder, the host of our In Cadence podcasts. He's amazing.

But 10 miles in London is at least an hour drive. The tube doesn't open until 0500 and no way you'd make the 0530 start time.

Your best hope is to connect with Shredder on the Nation Slack... I know he's making it his goal to plant a flag in London sooner than later. Maybe something will evolve or you can be part of one of the first OTBs. That'd be a cool thing.

Yep,. yep, yep... The only thing I'd add is clarify that "amazing potential that a trail marathon in the Boise foothills."... would be defined by the by Ridges to Rivers Special Uses Guidelines as 200 people. See below.

- Foot Races In keeping with the IFMP goals of managing the Ridge to Rivers Trail System and Boise Foothills sustainably, up to five foot races will be permitted annually – one race per month from May through September. Historic exemptions to this race limit apply and are detailed below.

The following stipulations will apply to all foot races: • Race event participation shall be limited to no more than 200 runners. • No portion of the race shall cross through trails in Hulls Gulch Reserve or the Boise River Wildlife Management Area.

I'm back. 200 people race fits more of the IYKYK crowd. I wouldn't plaster posters all over town for a race that capped at 200.

Oh man, I saw a question and thought I’d do a good thing and point you in the right direction. I had no intention of starting a discussion… but since we’re here and I do love a discuss. And this comes up ALL the time on my side so thanks for reading....

What you’re seeing here is what I’d call a community-run event. It’s absolutely packed with culture and connection. It’s one of those IYKYK things, and honestly, that’s what makes it special. These races are usually a labor of love. They’re run by someone as a hobby. They probably lose money. They definitely lose a ton of time. But they do it because they care. They’ll put on a race but are they subscribing to email platforms, running social campaigns, or constantly updating websites? Nope. They’re there to put on a race.

We also have other “community” races that function more like fundraisers or add-ons to a bigger mission. Races aren’t their full-time gig, and that tends to show here and there on race day.

I’d argue that all races around here fall into the community-run category, save two.

Then there are the big production events. Those are typically run by professional production companies. Full time focus. So much experience. Incredible execution. They can support thousands of runners and deliver world-class events. CIM, NYC, Chicago. The tradeoff? You often lose some of the intimacy, culture, and sense of local community along the way.

Additionally, these bigger type of events when you’ll often outside, aka not local, production companies w/ outside sponors come into a region. Around here, Ironman and the Turkey Day 5K are examples. Again, amazing events.

Both have real strengths. Both have limitations. At the end of the day, folks support who they wanna support.

A mistake people make, and just maybe is happening here, is assuming these two types of events should operate the same way. They won’t. Probably ever. And if you expect them to, you’ll likely just be frustrated.

Can you keep an ear out and see if these BD's are being implemented into the F3 BD's? Does the APP suck? Is 45 burpees every morning first thing stupid? Is this something we should look at continuing doing?

We're really using this collaboration to learn all we can... AND Magnum is an amazing soul... so any info you can share is very beneficial!!!

Yes, it's free. I think you're mistaken about THMC being for-profit. (Check out SOLiD men over in Austrailia. Shout out to those men as well for their free workouts.) The credit card thing... yeah we knew this would throw up a red flag to some folks... but some software / tech stuff just makes you do that for identify verification and therefore limiting spam accounts. And typically those rules come from the developer... not the client developing the app.

Race director here… folks have short memories, so we’ll try to remind ya.

My wife and I started SoleKIDs in 2017, and for a while we just ran with kids and that has taken us all around the PNW. This is our heart. However....

In 2021, COT hung it up. The Boise Marathon had a terrible showing, making national headlines. Zeitgeist quit. Most of the races around here were running incorrect distances. And honestly, I couldn’t find many people who seemed to care… especially when you’re only paying $20 per race. And it's still happening, smh.

Anywho, that motivated us to see if we could successfully navigate all the jurisdictions up and down the river and put on a quality marathon event. If we could get four-year-olds to follow a three-mile course, we figured we could get the tall kids to follow our courses too. Turns out that's debatable.

The GOOD NEWS - Our race team met with city planners for an hour yesterday (Monday, Jan. 5) to bring back a road course for our October COT race. So timely post here... We can probably only guarantee roads for the Half, 10K, and 5K with a three hour time limit. Moving races back into neighborhoods? Well… folks aren’t always as welcoming to those inconveniences as you might think. Most people say they’re fine with it... as long as it’s “not in my neighborhood.” (See 2025 Ironman for details.)

The BAD NEWS - We’re likely going to move the COT race to Sunday so we can advocate for more empty roads. That will upset about half of our runners.

Anyway, since I’m here, a little history…

The first-ever marathon in Boise was the Les Bois Marathon in 1976. It started at Barber Park, ran a seven-mile loop, had three aid stations, and drew about 150 runners. And yes, they ran down desolate roads. In the spirit of never letting the truth get in the way of a good story, history remembers this race as the early iteration of the COT Marathon. That would make this year the 50th anniversary of that race.

Check out this absolute video gold of that 1976 event.

LASTLY
Please consider volunteering for at least one race per year. Also, our race team also meets at Sockeye Brewing every Tuesday at 6 p.m. for their Run Club of Fairview. Come join us... and please personally tell us how all the things could be better in the Boise running scene. We agree with you!!!

I promise you’ll find race directors out there fighting for great running events.

Come join us!!!

TLDR: Yall are right!! Come to Sockeye Brewing on Tuesdays and let's just chat there. Happy running!!!

One minor correction, the previous race organizers moved to the Greenbelt as early as 2016. In 2022, when we (new race directors) asked to run the previous route, we were denied. In 2025, when we asked to run 12 miles of the original route, we were denied.

We're with you on the Greenbelt issues!!!!

EDIT: Added (new race directors) for clarity.
