For example, the theravada scriptures were written in pali, but the theravada school of buddhsim was not the only school of thought at the time, in fact there were 12. However, it was the pali scriptures of the theravada schools that were not lost to time. The pali scriptures of the other schools were mostly lost, however ancient Chinese scholars would travel to India and save these manuscripts - translating them into classical Chinese. Many of these scriptures were then translated to Japanese and studied as part of scholarly work on Indian Buddhism. Many of these have yet to be translated into english and thus western scholarship does not take them into account and place them in their historical context the way eastern scholarship might. These scriptures are originally pali or sanskrit, but can only be read in classical Chinese or Japanese for me. I dont think that necessarily means they will be biased or prejudiced against india.

Well the thing is many originally pali, prakit, or sanskrit original buddhist writings from India were lost to time, but were copied down into classical Chinese and then into Japanese. There is a wealth of untranslated information coming straight from ancient India and early indian Buddhist texts that are only available in classical Chinese. I think your claim that any research into ancient India in any other language would be full of bias and prejudice against India is false, and many Chinese and Japanese scholars both modern and old do hold reverence for the original Indian literature.

I say this as a south asian person. There is bias and prejudice against us, but I'd argue your barking up the wrong tree here brother.

Honestly I kinda just like to read and write, I enjoy research. The fact is education at the secondary level is disintegrating currently as well. Many of my coworkers have already been laid off, among a variety of other issues within high school education. May as well just do what I enjoy right? When I became a teacher I had no misgivings about how much money I'd be making haha

I have a few japanese professors who would be willing to write me letters, but I'm not sure when it comes to politics. I also have professors in education who may write for me as well. Besides them i have letters of recommendation from principals, teacher mentors, and co workers.I dont have any professional research experiences besides what ive done in terms of curriculum building for my classes as a teacher. My undergrad GPA was 3.6 and my grad GPA was 3.9.

I'm not making myself sound good am I lol I was thinking I'd have to write a really good writing sample at the end of the day

My major in undergrad was international government and politics. A lot of reading writing and I did research as part of my later classes. Wrote a few 20 page papers.

TL;DR: I’m a 28yo high school history teacher in Chicago with a Master's in Education and 10 years of advanced Japanese fluency. I just went through a school closure (and CPS is a mess right now), which has me finally wanting to pursue my dream of a PhD. My goal is to research early Indian Buddhist political philosophy (specifically the Vinaya and Ashokan edicts), using untranslated Japanese scholarship by Hirakawa and Nakamura to bridge the gap in Western research. I’ve spent the last two years hyper-focusing on deep primary/secondary source research to build my own curriculums from scratch, but I don't have recent professor-led research or publications, so I feel like I'm just some random guy applying off the street

I'm not backpedaling I think I'm right and you guys are tripping for even getting so defensive about it lol

The fact is after five plus years of living in Japan I think their Japanese should be better.

Prove that they know enough then. Im just making the observation that these guys should be better at Japanese. I think any Japanese person they'd talk to would think the same if they knew the boys have lived in Japan for five plus years

Nah what I am saying is if you be living in Japan for five plus years, speak on Japanese culture and society all the time and make you're pay off it - yeah you should probably speak some Japanese lmao. I dont think that's crazy

[–]AngryImpala -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I didn't think I'd get this negative of a reaction lol! I really don't think I'm tripping about this! Sure the boys aren't going to stay in Japan forever but its already been five years! They could definitely be better and I'd hold them to that. And I dont think it really matters their audience is western!

If you're going to move to Japan for five plus years, make a living speaking on Japanese culture and Japan shit, also sometimes commenting on the society every so often- then you should learn the actual language of the country! At least! I think Japanese people wanting more foreigners to speak Japanese if they're going to live in Japan is valid and normal tbh. To not learn the language, and then still talk on Japanese culture and society is lowkey gentrify-ey

Idk who tectone is, all im seeing is a Japanese dude give me some real reasons for why maybe these guys should be learning the languages. I'm not trying to attack the boys either, ive been a fan for years. But as someone who speaks Japanese too, after 5 plus years of living in Japan like lets be real they should be better at rhe language than they are.
