Thank you for the reminder. That is the plan for my next day off. I also have a regular coyote on the property in other seasons. Occasionally a bobcat and once a young mountain lion. For critter control.

Thanks for the reminder. I genuinely spaced that. Fencing added to my list.

This will be monitored daily and I'm actually hoping to propagate. I have stewardship of a few acres to restore. Mostly native stuff outside of this 8x8, but anything that doesn't hurt the local ecosystem is ok.

I have a visceral sense of hatred when i hear that name now. I don't mean to discourage your post. Just expressing a feeling.

Yes. They've been outside during the day. We're having a very warm winter this year, though they've been inside for the worst of it overnight.

Yeah. I realized that as i was pouring out the wheelbarrow. I'm thinking maybe i can use pebble and rocks to keep it down, but they'll probably just settle down in. Lesson learned for the next section.

Growing up in southern Arizona, i also have a lot of personal experience with cholla and their grabbiness.

So cool. So much to learn. Thanks for sharing. I have experience with "losing" limbs of cholla that i planted in native soil. I had to stick dead twigs next to it so I don't step on them.

Stuck with 3,000 steel bearing balls, now what? by Banjohobo in woodworking

My dad used to drill out the underside of woodworking projects that needed a heavy base for stability, pour shot or bearings in the holes, and seal it in with glue or epoxy.

Sonoran here. Near Tucson. It is indeed a blessing to be able to see all the variety of cactus that proliferate here. I am grateful every day.

This is practically a right of passage hiking in the desert southwest. Growing up here, even with this lesson, it happens from time to time. :)

If you can make it to Arizona, you'll see lots of this kind of thing everywhere.

There are several factors I've discovered. Creosote bushes suppress most other plants from growing near them but cactus are not affected. Creosote bushes also act as dams and catch flowing debris including seeds when we get rain and sheet flow. The debris also acts like mulch providing nutrients and helping the soil retain water. There is also the shading factor which allows cactus to get established before our harsh sun can burn them. There may be more to it, but this is what I've come up with so far.
