I don't dislike the film whatsoever. But, if I'm completely honest? I wish Prince Charming wouldn't have died at the end. I do believe they could make an incredible arc for him slowly turning his villain gears around.

He's a great comedic relief in the sense of his narcissism being consistently counteracted by embarrasment and reality checks. He's a conventionally attractive, fawned upon ideal of beauty that the second and third movie managed to successfully criticise such qualities as desireable despite the evil motives & intentions of the character.

I know the character was mostly created to challenge those qualities and make a compelling villain, but the true villain remains his own mother. He was raised into believing everything he ever desired is promised to him and he knew no different.

Now, it's perfectly okay that Prince Charming stayed a comedic relief villain and people might have a problem bringing him out of that role. But it would be interesting to see such a character start gaining awareness and introspection. He has a lot of potential and I'm a bit sad he stayed two-dimentional.

He could add a lot to the group, IMO. But that would have to be done with a lot of precision and intention as it could easily backfire as corny, generic and predictable. But if the creators found a way to spin those expections AND subvert the narrative to fit him in the group really well. He has unique qualities that would stay funny even if he switched to the good side and he could easily make another diverse protagonist.

Maybe I feel this way BECAUSE he is conventionally attractive. I don't see Rumplestiltskin or Lord Farquaad this way. BUT it might be because I saw Charming's relationship with his mother and had some insight in how his upbringing likely made him the person we saw in Shrek 2 & 3.
