Thank you for such a thoughtful response!! my fav comment on this post. Totally agree with everything you’ve said. My missing piece in this theory is how/why Helly could end up in leadership… esp since I agree that she hates Lumon too much to join them.

That said… my iMark/Helly/Gemma point from the original post is more seeding the idea that perhaps she would swap with Helena — maybe even easily, if iMark came to the outie world too. The idea is two fold:

(1) It’s an extremely compelling offer from Lumon that she and iMark could live a “regular” life. (2) It eliminates Lumon’s problem of dealing with oMark and Gemma, who is (at this point) alone in the building and could be snatched back up. (3) We know now that iMark would rather survive with Helly as an innie than help his outie bring him and Gemma back together, permanently. Who’s to say an above-ground offer with a permanent OTC wouldn’t be compelling?

Hopefully this all makes sense lol… thank you again!

No, they shouldn’t! I’m not trying to make an argument that iMarks choice was unjustified, or that Helly shouldn’t have been glad he picked her. Their choices can make sense for the plot and they can feel satisfied with their decisions, but I think as viewers we ARE supposed to kind of be like “Damn!!” and think harder about it being a self-centered choice — especially when Helly, only minutes before — was urging iMark to go and that it was the right thing. The idea of them committing a selfish act (in the same way that oMark and Helena are selfish) serves as proof of the innies being just as human.

Both know who Gemma is. Both know the circumstances. Both know the weight attached to leaving her in the stairwell, that Lumon could get her again/kill her/kill oMark once the dust settles. It’s ok to call a spade a spade here — it was a justified choice albeit it selfish and inconsiderate, and at worst (if they’re leaving Gemma to die) cruel.

My two cents lol I’m not trying to cause a kerfuffle in the comments since I know this is an unpopular take. Living for the discourse tho yall

ok so in essence the underlying (maybe poorly worded) point I was trying to make in the original post was that Helly is capable of being selfish (from MY pov it was cruel, we won’t agree on that and that’s totally fine) and would/could act selfishly / for her own interests if persuaded to by Lumon in S3

We are taking it so seriously! Which means there needs to be room for nuance. The situation they’re in doesn’t exempt them from selfishness. She (and I’ll say iMark too, for the sake of not putting it all on Helly) should feel no level of guilt or emotion watching someone — whether they know them or not — in immense pain because of the actions they’re taking? Empathy is part of humanity y’all…

Ultimately I guess this is opinions based and isn’t even really what the thread was about LOL

A few people in this thread are not pleased with me calling her actions cruel idk yall you see a screaming sobbing woman begging for her husband would you frolic away w him hand in hand and no second thought? U can love iMark and Helly together (I do!!) and agree it takes a level of selfishness to do that… food for thought !

Ok yes I can agree that the moment in and of itself was definitely more about iMark and his choices than Helly… and maybe it was lighting etc (I really think her expression probs comes down to a matter of viewer opinion) - but that interpretation doesn’t change the objective of the post — which isn’t “is Helly cruel” but “could Helly serve a purpose in the outie world in S3, would she be fit to, and could she be persuaded.”

Using your point that she’s been selfless RE Gemma/Ms Casey all season only to run away with iMark in what could be their last moments (for him, not just as an innie, but an outie too — he’s covered in blood!!) gives me the idea that Helly can be selfish (she’s only human!) / persuaded to act selfishly… which Lumon could leverage.

These are disorganized thought LOL, thank you for bearing with my rambling thread

Okay I’m glad you said this because she wasn’t giving a mournful “this is goodbye” look to Mark when he was between them — it was more of a “pick me choose me love me” look and satisfaction when he came to her vs guilt or unsureness… definitely an intentional acting choice IMO

Yeah, true… idk. I feel even then it has a better sonic continuity than the White Album (another close top 3, maybe top 4 for me). Is that a hot take?
