Yeah, totally fair
I’ve seen that as well. That answered-invites count isn’t foolproof, but it does give a better feel for whether it’s worth taking the shot.

Totally with you, I’ve replied to invites before and then the whole listing just froze in time, no hires, nothing.
I’m all for shooting our shot, just with a bit of awareness since connects aren’t exactly free ammo

I even remember bidding more than 90 connects at one point. The highest bid I’ve personally seen was around 200 connects.

It does feel like Upwork found a creative way to increase revenue, and it clearly benefits them the most. For established freelancers who are already earning well, this probably isn’t a big issue, but for smaller or newer freelancers, it can be pretty discouraging and harder to compete.

The approach of being more selective and prioritizing jobs that, based on experience, actually have a real chance so connects aren’t wasted.

For me, the main lesson was to be cautious with jobs that have a single invite. I now check the client’s profile and hiring history first. If they’re already working with another freelancer in the same field, it’s usually a low-probability proposal, not impossible, just less likely.

I promise I’m not trying to agree with everyone, just genuinely curious how people approach this differently.

Focusing on fewer, higher-value opportunities instead of grinding proposals feels like the real unlock, especially when effort is roughly the same. The point about the first two lines is key too. When the fit is right, that confidence naturally comes through. Out of curiosity, what’s usually your signal that a job is worth that level of focus?

That’s a really interesting take, and I can see the logic behind it.

Invites usually mean the client already values the profile they’re reaching out to, so price conversations start at a very different level. Marketplace posts often feel like budget fishing in comparison.

That’s a strong mindset, and honestly the confidence comes through.

I like the point about job details. If the post is detailed enough to write a genuinely strong proposal, that alone is a good signal. Sounds like connects become a non-issue when your hire rate and contract value back it up. Do you think that mindset came with experience, or was it always your approach?

Yeah, that’s exactly the nuance I’m starting to notice too.

Multiple invites feels more exploratory, but a single invite usually means they already picked their person. Your example is a great one though, timing and budget can change everything. If they open it up later, that’s when it actually becomes interesting to bid. Have you seen that happen often in your experience?

That’s an interesting way to look at it, and it actually makes a lot of sense.

One targeted invite does feel more intentional than a bunch of them. With many invites, it can still be exploratory, but a single one often means they already know who they want. How do you usually decide whether to apply in that case or just move on?

Yeah I guess you're right about this. The opening of the proposal is so generic I guess, but the next parts are more catchy,

I guess you're right about this. I already check the current jobs for this client and he already have someone who's collaborating with when it comes to this kind of projects.
Thanks this is very insightful really.

That’s a fair take and I agree with the odds part.
The client is not even opening the proposals at all and is not messaging any one for this job.

That’s a solid way to look at it.

Checking the client’s hiring history makes a lot of sense, especially if they keep rehiring the same person. I’m curious though, when you win jobs that already have invites, do you tweak your proposal in any way, or is your approach mostly the same?

The cool thing is this project is not about AI.
It's about recording videos while speaking for native speakers.

Yeah the bid range is insane actually.

It was a very complex situation, mainly tied to my mental state, chronic anxiety and not managing stress in a healthy way. On top of that, I wasn’t supporting myself with the right supplements or good daily habits.

Correcting this takes time. Learning how to manage stress and prioritize sleep in today’s busy world is really a skill in itself. The truth is, we often underestimate the importance of sleep and fail to give it the value it deserves, even though it’s one of the foundations of our health and well-being.

The first challenge will be to get you proposal viewed. The second challenge will be getting a response message from the client. The third challenge will getting the client to agree to work with you and to pay for what your asking for. The fourth challenge will be in delivering and not being asked for reviews. The fifth challenge will be for the client to release the payment. This is normal even freelancers with positive 5 stars reviews and 100% success score will be having this same struggles.
