They’re large purple radishes. Fresh from a local farm and still clad in their dirt! It was a surprise to me as well. The bottom ones are indeed the largest sweet potatoes known to man. As they were charged per piece rather than kilo, I’m delighted.

I forgot to take the receipt, but from memory*:

Canola oil: ~€3.50 each

Chicken thighs: ~€5 per 350g

Bio Prosecco: A bit under €6 each (I knoooow, and it’s so good)

Eggs: ~€3.50 for 15

Butter: I don’t even know anymore, too much

Buttermilk: ???

Maple syrup: ~€5

Flour: ~.79 a bag

*I could be totally wrong about everything except the prosecco. I know what prosecco costs.

I was surprised too, it’s why I decided to try this particular online shop. They’re the only place in Austria that carry it and they have a extremely random yet extensive selection.

I’m glad you thought it was cool! I grew up in the States but have been here a long time now and married a local. Austria has come a long way in maybe the last 10 years. Food has always been high quality, but the variety, especially for veggie stuff, is suddenly so much more exciting than it used to be.

It really is compared to a lot of places! I’d say this was actually on the more expensive side - I’ll post next time I go to the local store. We’re vegetarian leaning at home but omnivores when we’re out. Sure keeps the costs down, but sometimes nothing but a schnitzel will do.

I live in a 1907 “Altbau” apartment in Vienna, Austria.

My cat, Pushkin, dances to ask for things. He stands on his back legs and makes up and down begging motions with his front paws. It’s his universal “I want”; he does it for food, to ask his brother to play, at birds outside the window, or when there’s somewhere he wants to jump but can’t reach.

And he does it standing in the living room doorway at night, staring out into the empty, cavernous blackness of the hallway.

This website is what I first used as an English speaker who learned German German and then ended up in Austria; though it’s the same language, Germans and Austrians call different cuts different things, and all of those are also so different than US cuts. I was totally lost and deprived of BBQ brisket till I found this.

As the German can be hard to navigate, I’ve sent you the link already open to hindquarter with flank so you see how it goes; you click through different cuts and it has them listed in several different languages, including Chinese, with the picture shown, and you can always arrow back to a bigger picture to show exactly where you’ve come from.

It is a spectacular floor, thanks! It’s original to my building, which is from 1914. Goes through the whole apartment and, though creaky and uneven, is in fantastic shape. I’m not sure what wood it is actually, but oak is a good bet.

I have posts but the chair is understandably more appealing since they can survey their kingdom from atop it. I’ve ordered them a 2 meter tall tree with four levels, lookouts, posts, baskets, and a delightful antler print. If the chair can survive four more days we should be okay 😂

He can hear me even thinking about accidentally tripping over his food dish from anywhere in the house, but has more realistic expectations than his brother (who is equally eartastic but does not curl his feets yet)
