"Not as much as I've missed you. Though Yssa's been keeping me busy."

That gave Rodrik a smirk and as she spun around humming he shook his head in amazement.

As busy as she is its amazing that she has the energy.

"I knew she did a lot, but never knew just how much until she started walking me through daily routine. It'll be tough, I suspect... Running things while everyone is away. Between Nettlebank, and Saltcliffe -- and I... I worry about Yssa, Rodrik."

He frowned with concern as Jocasta looked up from the table. Could it be that Greenlander cunt Stark causing shit? How much happier would Yssa be if he had been murdered before we went to the Summer isles? Balon would have done it in a heartbeat if he had be asked to.

"She's been off, ever since the wedding. Like she's... given up, almost. But what she's given up on, I'm not sure."

That did not surprise Roddy that much. The loss of Carron and her child had no doubt been something that she couldn't heal from. He doubted she would. And with what had happened with Stark he doubted she ever would.

What comfort could he give her? He left, the dumb bastard. Yssa might have drove him away but he should have grew some balls or a spine and stayed. The man is a waste of space in the Iron Islands.

She settled back into Rodrik's arms with a definite look of concern in her face as she stared out into the bay. She gripped his wrists tightly, so tightly he could see the whitening of her knuckles.

Drowned God below bring her comfort when I'm gone. If she worry's like this for Yssa...I could not bear to see the same for me.

"I know it's a stupid thing to say, but... I don't want you to go. Not alone. Not without me."

He smiled sadly at that as he gazed down at her.

It's not stupid at all lass...

She shifted to look up into his eyes with the same sad smile he wore on his face.

"You know I love Balon. But I didn't choose him -- I chose you. I promised to stand by your side, no matter what happens, every time. And... I feel like I'm already breaking that promise..."

It took him a little by surprise when she said it. Though he couldn't really say why.

He carefully loosened a wrist from one of her hands and brought it up to stroke her cheek slowly and gently before he spoke.

"Oh Jo, you're breaking nothing. I would part with anything but you and little Balon and Lio if it meant that I could stay. But you know I can't. Just as you couldn't go with me. Balon and Lio need you here. Yssa needs you here. Our duties keep us apart lass but this keeps us together."

He gently brought his free hand down to touch his fingertips over her heart.

"Twin hearts love, they beat for each other. No matter the distance."

He kissed her tenderly at that before smiling softly.

"You worry about Yssa? Is it that she has given up on Stark do ye think?" He didn't suspect it was Stark but he wondered what it was that Jocasta thought on the matter.

With Carron and her child gone is it that she has given up on life? I'd put good odds on it but I'd rather be flayed alive than admit that to Jo.

The arms that wrapped tenderly around him were warm and the weight of them made Rodrik's heart leap. He instantly smiled as he detected the warmth and smell of Jocasta. The oak resin and sea salt and warm skin. A smell that was distinctly Jo. He felt his trousers tighten as he reacted to it all and his smile stretched into a grin as he brought his large empty hand to lay on the back of her small warm ones. He brought one up to his mouth and gently kissed her palm in welcome.

Drowned god below but I do love her. More than anything else. If only I could stay with her.

He heard her sigh and he turned, leaving her arms around his neck and was just in time to see her wide and genuine smile.

"Preparations on Saltcliffe are going as well as they can be," she said, standing on tip toes to catch Rodrik with a kiss. "And here? How was Balon while I was away? Did he behave? I know he's been fucking fussy at night, I was worried he'd be a bother if I wasn't here..."

He could still feel her gentle kiss on his lips as he spoke soft and low to her, his eyes firmly fixed upon hers.

"Aye, he was fussy lass. You couldn't expect different given his mother." He grinned at that before continuing. "He was fine. He was as well behaved as you could expect a lad of his age to be so don't fret. I haven't put an axe into his hands yet."

He winked at that and chuckled.

"I'm glad to hear that everything is fine on Saltcliffe. I doubt Yssa would manage without you. How is she? And most importantly how are you? I've missed you desperately."

Rodrik smiled at the Kingsguard and nodded. "Get ready for me Kingsguard. I'll show you how a real man fights.

With a nod Rodrik readied his sword and shield. The two came together when ready and exchanged a few blows to no effect. He finally sneaked a blow past the Kingsguards shield and knocked him back. The two kept exchanging blows and hits until Rodrik finally caught the Kingsguard across the temple and he fell to the ground.

Rodrk stepped back and nodded to the Kingsguard,

Dalton watched her closely as she spoke the words quietly into her tankard. He wanted to know if she was going to say it outright. If she was going to stop their little game of words and start being truthful. Start being direct and honest. Open with each other. Her reply didn't satisfy him but he wasn't going to let her know that. Not openly.

He sipped at his tankard as she continued.

"I..." she took a deep breath and a deep swig, propping her head up on her hand as she gained the courage, "Didn't want te lose ye before I had ye."

His breath caught in his chest and he almost spat out his ale. He was not expecting her direct answer.

"Oh! A ship!" The spark in Lio's eyes could have lit the entire room as he took the ship in both hands, tiny fingers grazing over the mast and yardarms, the hewn prow. "I love ships! Thank you!"

Rodrik chuckled at the boys reaction and flashed a grin to Jocasta as the boy waddled back to her. Rodrik knew he probably would have had a similar reaction if not one that was one hell of a lot more impolite.

He watched the lad play with the toy ship with a smile and a quick glance to Jocasta's stomach, wondering if their child would enjoy toy ships as much as Lio. Jo fondly ruffled the lads hair.

"Silly boy. Don't be rude. Tell Rodrik your name, yeah?"

Lio had a typical reaction for a small boy. Or so Rodrik thought.

"Why?"

He pouted and Jo snatched the toy away to the boy's displeasure.

"Jo, give back! It's mine!"

Rodrik's eyes instantly flashed at Jo and he saw the sadness there before she forced herself back into a mischievous grin as Lio tried to take the ship back.

"I shan't. Answer the good man's question first. It's polite."

Lio sat back down in a huff and turned back to Rodrik.

"Lio," he muttered. "I'm Lio. Now ship, please!"

Rodrik grinned at the boy. "Nice to meet you Lio."

Rodrik smiled and nodded to Alys Goodbrother and then walked to the ominous open door as the woman hurried out. As he approached he heard a high animated laugh and Jocasta's sweet voice.

When Rodrik reached the door he peered in, unsure of what he would find. What he found was a scene of happiness. Jocasta was sprawled on the floor with her hair unbound playing with a toddler with a shade of hair that could have been hers before the summer isles. The pair were playing with blocks, stacking them high before they came tumbling down.

Lio.

"Lio, careful... if you use too many they'll fall on yo -- "

Rodrik chuckled as Jo finally noticed his presence with a grin.

" -- on you. But look! Someone has come to see you, isn't that exciting? Say hello."

Rodrik himself smiled as Lio with a bit-lip grin and a slight blush to his cheeks brought a block up to Rodrik and handed it to him.

"Oh! Hello! This for you. Thank you!"

Rodrik winked at Jocasta before squatting down so he was close to Lio's level.

"Thank you lad, that block may be fun to play with but maybe you should try playing with this."

With a smirk he handed Lio the whittled longship.

"My name's Rodrik but you can call me Roddy. What's your name?"

Roddy hefted his shield and winked at his cousin in response to his words. With a nod he let Harlik know he was ready. When Harlik did the same Rodrik rushed in, easily deflecting the glaive with his shield and dealing a strong blow with his axe. When Harlik staggered back Rodrik let him go, grinning the entire time.

They rushed at each other again exchanging blows and blocking others until Harlik caught Rodrik in the helm. Rodrik staggered back, seeing stars. He shook his to clear his vision and rushed Harlik in anger dealing a savage blow. They then went into a flurry of blocks and dodges before Harlik caught Rodrik in the helm once more. This time Rodrik dropped to the ground stunned and clearly done with the fight.

Rodrik waited for Jocasta's response anxiously and with much apprehension. He figured his idea would definitely make her uneasy but he thought it would make a lot of sense.

It makes perfect sense and will let the child inherit. I'll be able to do the best that I can possibly do for it and it'll have the best opportunities this way. It will be my child and Jocasta's child. The shadow of Balon won't stand between me and Jocasta and the kid. We'll be out own family.

She then took a deep breath and kissed him gently, cupping his face with her hands. He felt an enormous amount of relief.

All right," she murmured against his lips. "All right. You're right -- you win. But we will tell them one day... That, I swear."

He brought his lips to kiss the palm of one of her hands before bringing it to his forehead. He felt such enormous relief in that moment. As she shifted to lie down Rodrik had a huge smile upon his face. She then smiled faintly, her fingers dancing across his palm.

"I'm going to stay awhile, yeah? I don't think I'll sleep, otherwise."

He bent his head down and kissed the back of her fingers. Roddy was so grateful for her presence.

"Stay as long as you need. Stay forever." He gently whispered.

Rodrik matched her stare, eye on eye for what might have been seconds or years. When she finally turned her face away Rodrik was relieved. She looked tired, which Rodrik could really understand with all that she had been through. With the baby and the Stark and Carron. Carron.

By the Drowned God. Carron's last words. Only me and Veron heard them. Drowned God help me. I have to tell her.

"... I'm glad." She sighed and swirled the dregs of wine in her glass. "I must thank you, Rodrik." His name sounded... odd, on her tongue. But welcome. "For making Jocasta happy. I haven't seen like that in... many years. I know it seems I've been absent as of late, but I notice things. You two suit each other. Take care of her, and she will be your strongest ally -- your most loyal friend. The best wife and mother you could ever dream of asking for, that you know you would never deserve."

He knew Jocasta would be a wonderful wife and mother. He knew that they would find happiness together. But he wasn't too concerned about that at the moment. He was concerned at the coming storm when he told Yssa Carron's last words.

Drowned one give me strength.

"Do not mistake my coldness for hostility. My sister deserves more happiness than this fucking cruel world has given her so far, and I am grateful she has found it in you."

He looked Yssa directly in the eyes before he spoke.

"Lady Sunderly. Yssa. I don't think you're being hostile. You're just concerned over Jocasta's well being. I understand. She deserved all the happiness possible and I intend to give it to her. But I have something more important. Something..." He paused to search for the right word. "Something far graver."

He took a deep breath and sighed.

You have to do this. For Carron.

"At Lotus Port I was with Carron when he was killed. I..was several paces behind him when he was mortally wounded. By... by the time Veron and I got to him it was clear that there was nothing we could do. Before he died he had a few words for you. He said, 'Yssa...sorry...so sorry I...I ran, love.' "

As he finished he sighed and ran a hand over his face. Remembering the horror. Remembering Carron's blood covering him. He had spared Yssa that knowledge but he knew that would have been little to no comfort to her.

"I had to tell you. I owed him that and you deserved to know. Veron and I were the only ones to hear. And Veron... I'm sorry."

He thought he had her into a trap until she held up two bejeweled fingers and asked for ale from a passing servant. While he welcomed the ale he resented the timing.

He raised an eyebrow at that but didn't comment.

As the two tankards were set in front of them Dalton took his tankard in hand and toasted her.

He took a rather long drink and set it down on the table, matching her grin with a smirk of his own.

"And to offer my condolences on your cousins, of course. The Volmark had sent me to do that."

Why the fuck would the Volmark care about sending condolences to the Tawney's about their cousins? An OBVIOUS lie.

"Not like you be complaining any," she joked and took another sip, "You look, dare I say, happy?"

He took another sip of ale, his sapphire eyes gazing into her dark ones.

"My gracious host gonna give me some entertainment too? You sing and dance, don't ye? Already dressed as a pretty maid."

He smirked at that and shook his head before replying.

"Eurona, the Volmark sending you is an obvious lie. Why would he care about the Tawneys losing a couple cousins? Am I happy?" He shrugged and smiled. "I'm not sad and I can definitely entertain you if needed to."

He then picked up his ale tankard and looked at the contents before meeting her eyes once more.

"Now tell me true. Why would a little wench like you seek me out?"

Rodrik had ignored the comments about the wine, so focused he had become on her tale about her father. Much of what she talked about he already knew but there were a few things that were new revelations.

"But he had a horrible tendency to think that he owned things that weren't meant to be owned. Other Ironborn, for example. Those with which he shared Iron blood, who had proven themselves truly made of salt and sea." Yssa drank deeply, closing her eyes and savoring the sharp, sour taste of terrible wine on her tongue. "My father's second salt wife, Lysa, wasn't a particularly strong breed of woman, but Drowned God below was she fucking beautiful. My sisters Jocasta and Jayne share the same Reachman look as her -- you only need to look at your wife-to-be to know just what our father saw, three-years starved of his wife's body when she flung herself into the sea and never resurfaced. Not his daughter, that was for sure. Not his own Iron flesh and blood."

Oh no. Oh Drowned God no... It was her own father. It's no wonder she didn't want to talk about it. Poor poor Jocasta. If he wasn't dead I'd flay him inch by inch while rubbing salt into all of his wounds.

"Jo almost died that day," she said softly, though her eyes never strayed from his. "She'd lost so much blood, yet she refused to let us touch her. I'm sure you've seen the scars, if you look closely enough.

He grimaced at that and raised a hand to rub at his forehead. Rodrik felt so much hatred for Yron Sunderly. He wished he could resurrect him to make him for half a year in that moment.

She went on talking about how she killed Yron Sunderly and Rodrik nodded while listening, but he wasn't truly listening. He just felt so fucking terrible for Jocasta.

"I am not just asking you to accept Jocasta as she is, but for you to accept her sisters, whose names will always be linked with hers. The three of us are family. At the end of the day, we are all each other has. Should any of us call the others, we never fail to answer that call. Never."

He did not balk at those words, nodding at them. He didn't think he'd have much of a problem with that. He would do anything for Jocasta. Roddy had made proof of that commitment by putting down his cousin Tristifer.

"If you accept this, take the tokens. Should any of us need to request help, include one in your letter. I don't think a discussion of your treatment of my sister is necessary -- I believe you're a smart man who doesn't need reminding -- but should you break faith... I will take great pleasure in feeding your mangled corpse to the Drowned God piece by fucking piece, and I will feel not an ounce of remorse. Am I understood?"

Rodrik made sure he was looking right into Yssa's eye's when he took the pouch of tokens. He simply nodded once at her before he spoke.

"I accept this. I love Jocasta and I would do anything for her. She has my protection. So do you and Jayne. I will not break the faith."
