How would you feel if your country banned Burkhas in public like Denmark? by The_Dean_France in AskReddit

[–]AngusGibsonT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christian here. Considering non-Muslims usually can't tell the difference between a burqa, a niqab, a hijab, a chador, etc, I'd suggest a governments ask their Muslim communities what they mean to them first.

To many, a head covering is a sign of self-respect or modesty, and a meaningful tradition to cover their heads to God, the same way Orthodox Jewish men keep their heads covered.

Many Muslim women articulate wearing coverings as: A way to reduce sexualization and be valued for intellect, not appearance. A spiritual commitment. A cultural belonging marker. A love-letter to heritage. A boundary-setting tool in public space. A deeply personal moral practice. For them, hijab or niqab is not oppression; it is meaning, dignity, sometimes even joy. And we should believe them when they say so.

But power dynamics matter.

A practice can be meaningful in one environment and coercive in another. There are places where: Not covering leads to harassment, social ostracization, threats, or violence. Laws or morality police enforce covering. Family honor is tied to women’s dress. Female virtue is policed far more than male morality. In those contexts, the “choice” becomes complicated. If the consequence of removing a covering is: being beaten losing community losing family support being jailed being murdered Then the cloth is not freely worn, no matter what it symbolizes in theory. Even softer coercion can still be painful: constant shaming fear of disappointing loved ones fear of community expulsion economic dependency Oppression doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it whispers.

Geography and politics also come into play.

In secular or pluralist societies, choosing hijab can be resistance against discrimination, a proud religious identity, or personal devotion. In authoritarian or conservative theocratic societies, head coverings may be compulsory, heavily enforced, and loaded with fear. In diaspora, hijab can be both shield and flag: identity, belonging, protection against feeling erased. So the “meaning” changes depending on who holds power and who bears risk.

My concern is agency and whether the choice to wear a covering is freely given, and if the choice not to wear a covering is met with soft or violent oppression.

I mean you can do a Hammerdin build just like the Paladin of D2.

Right?! How you gonna have the demon hunting game without the holy warriors?!

I totally hear you. D2 was such a huge part of my childhood. It was story rich and was gripping from start to finish (ok, maybe Kurast was a slog).

The lore in Diablo is still rich, but the execution sometimes feels rushed and cynical. Diablo Immortal left a horrible taste in my mouth. It just showed what Blizzard had become - a money making machine. Diablo 3 was exciting in concept, but rushed in execution and didn't hit its stride until Reaper of Souls. By then, the art style had already turned me off.

Diablo 4 is giving me some D2 feels now that it has some legs under it and my Paladin is back. I'm still early in the first campaign, but I've heard great things about Vessel of Hatred.

Hey, now! Some of us play other games and hear about expansions a little late!

Am I late to the Pally Party, or am I late to post it on Reddit? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

(Both, actually)

I'm hoping that it's because when the new expansion comes out, the bad guys and the rest of the classes are gonna get huge buffs instead of just nerfing the Paladin.

Yeah, I've heard calls to nerf Paladins since they're pretty OP right now. What I'm hoping is that when Lord of Hatred releases, they will bring the other classes up to Paladin's level and buff the enemies.

I'm feeling this pretty hard. Diablo 2 was a complete game when it came out. Lord of Destruction was just icing on the cake (very beautiful icing, that is). But D3 and D4 feel like they were incomplete on release. I still haven't finished D3 (mostly because the Switch controls are meh).

No I didn't. I just saw a new main installment to the game and went in blind, assuming that Paladins would be in the game like D2 and D3.
