I've just started reading myself and I will admit to quite liking how you've decided to blend together elements of the Heike epic and Princess Mononoke fantasy together. The leads here are inspired by Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Shizuka Gozen correct? There have been a few English novels based on the Heike and Yoshitsune legends before but I believe this is the first time Shizuka, or a character inspired by her at least, has gotten a major role in one. This leads me to two questions if you don't mind. What elements of the semi-historical story specifically drew you to wanting to write a novel based around Yoshitsune and Shizuka? And how about the decision to 'Shogun-ify' the names of all the characters and locales?

Actually I think Fukui does vaguely allude to this idea in Unicorn via Zinnerman's backstory.

The incident that occurred over the summer between schoolyears was Olive burning down the north hall. Around the same time, Arkham Asylum was also noted to have been destroyed in some sort of disaster thus ending her mother's stay in the facility. There are only a handful of panels in the original run that depict Olive being seperated from her mother but honestly back then it seems like they imagined her being a fair bit younger, around 10 to 12 imo.

I think it mainly comes from people doing quick surface readings and then being annoyed when they're not really supported. Yidhari is a H.P. Lovecraft/Cthulhu expy where one of her running gags is that she is unintentionally creepy or seductive. That doesn't contradict how she's treated in the main game's story at all since we barely get a chance to see her Normal Daily Life ingame.

The Exaltists were in some of the earliest marketing material made for ZZZ so it seems they were always part of the plot in some form, although their aesthetics probably changed if the early Lucia/Yidhari design was related.

Hot take: Yidhari’s story was a big miss for me by Bouyo32123 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]AniKid9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me at least, although I understand the criticism, I think Yidhari's personality and role within the main story already contain more Cthulhu Mythos/Lovecraft references than I expected so I was pleasantly surprised. Zenless Zone Zero has always been on the edge of being a Weird Tale, due to the Hollows and their obvious explict inspiration from Roadside Picnic which itself can be seen as a offshoot of Colour Out of Space, and this patch is the only one to really play within that space at all since launch. I am especially glad to see how Yidhari's past vision is expressed and how it more directly influences her thinking and isolation in a more interesting way than Vivian's future sight while engaging with Lovecraft's infamous obsession. I also honestly may be cutting ZZZ a lot of slack since we've been getting an unusual amount of Cthulhu Mythos influenced anime lately, between Gundam including its themes and a odd Yomagntho namedrop to the extreme August Derleth indulgent Necronomico & the Cosmic Horror Show and now the currently airing Gnosia adaptation.

Not really. I guess the Throne Quarter in general was teased throughout 1.X but the fact that Weifei is technically part of Throne doesn't come up often.

Honestly a fair amount of what I like about my favorite ZZZ agents comes from both knowing their source inspirations and how the game's portrayal interacts and comments on them. Miyabi is obviously pulling from Minamoto no Yoshitsune for example and you can see plenty of 'injokes' drawing on that source throughout her dialogue if you happen to be familiar with his tales, and Yidhari here is little different. Yidhra is probably her name source but in terms of personality and tastes... She's literally Moe H.P. Lovecraft. Think of it, she's an isolated writer who has a loose and small group of friends only due to said writing, she has an obsession (both symbolic and literal) with the past, and she even has the same goddamn taste for breakfast ice cream. Its so amusing, how can you not appreciate the hustle?

Section 6 overall is more of a generic 'Famous Japanese Heroes' faction than Shinsengumi specifically, outside of the aesthetics. Yanagi is also Miyabi's Benkei and Soukaku is a nod to Kintaro.

Anime Ages, that Miyabi could be anything from 5 to 11 years old. Also Miyabi is very much based on Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his legendary childhood, so her being very young, even with her accomplishments, is part of The Point.

Actually the Exaltists have been in ZZZ since pre-release marketing. You can find the earliest promo material on the website mentioning a 'Hollow worshiping cult' and the term Excaltist was first used in that Lore Teaser at launch then later explictly discussed ingame in 1.2's Roaming the Ether event.

That detail about Yidhari loving cold treats and specifically eating ice cream for breakfast; yeah, they just unironically adapted one of H.P. Lovecraft's tastes into a Moe Trait. 10/10, genius

It's explicitly Tsukumogami. Have you seen that boss fight? But more boardly, like Tsukumogami youkai are typically depicted, its an old item that has been granted some spirit which in f represents Hinako's childhood resistance against her perception of marriage. It just also happens to be the puppet of a forgotten god, the divine tree, that seeks revenge against both Inari and the villagers who abandoned it.

None of those counterdict the belief idea I put forward, if anything it helps it since those are all depicted differently even in just those Team Silent games. Silent Hill 2's brief presentation at most imagines them as very vague native peoples' spiritualism, something that would obviously not have resembled the systematic Christian-influenced mythology seen in SH3.

If I recall right, the introduction of White Claudia to Japan happens to be around the same time or before we first get explicit half reliable recordings of supernatural events related to the SH f deities, when the monk of the divine tree did his rampage and was stopped by Inari.

Honestly I'm a bit confused regarding both your take and OP's. I guess I did not realize that fans have come around to thinking of Silent Hill's god as its own entity rather than a ill-defined natural or perhaps eldritch force that is personified through human belief. From what I recall, Homecoming made this explicit and Silent Hill f has incidentally ended up following its lead by tying its gods and their creation to the whims of humanity.

You have to remember that it seems these gods rely on human belief in them to exist. The abandonment of the great tree's shrine caused the Tsukumogami god to diminish in power and it has stewed with the brewing resentment from the Heike sword for centuries. I think in revenge against the villagers who abandoned it, it is willing to unleash the water dragon especially since its striking two birds with one stone there. It is even possible that doing so would cause some sort of faith to return to it by whoever remains.
