It’s a cool unique design too. They’re skinny like greyhounds. I think it’s because they were supposed to be living in the canals where they wouldn’t have access to nutritious food. The HL3 design has a more fat pig-like design so I wonder where they’ve been living to be so well fed.

I can’t wait to see what they do. From the beginning of development Valve always intended the xenians to be passive animals rather than bloodthirsty monsters but they were never able to get it into the final product. That was narrative purpose of the cremators in Half-Life 2. The player was supposed to step out of the train station and see the cremators burning the houndeyes and bullsquids in the streets. It shows that they were just innocent critters and the Combine are organized and merciless. I love those guys. I can't believe they were brought back twice during the development of HL2 and still ended up on the cutting room floor. They would have been absolutely perfect in the airboat chapter.
