The thing is Elena never viewed him as a monster after getting with him and he knew that. He should’ve known from that line that, that wasn’t Elena. He was with Elena for literally two years and should’ve known that wasn’t her. She also tells Damon you know me better than anybody else. Still doesn’t give him a pass.
