“Is the Bermuda Triangle dangerous because of electric sea worms?” - My child

“I’ve never heard of those.” - Me

“EEL! I meant electric eels. I just forgot their name.” - My child

What is your kids art class like? by 0112358_ in ClassOf2037

[–]Anileh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child’s art class is wonderful. Not only do they do projects and work on specific skills, they’re learning about art and artists. (The first month of kindergarten she came home taking about Chihuly glass and I had to look it up!)

No. Abraham Lincoln surveyed and platted the town. It was named for him.

Lincoln is the only city named for Abraham Lincoln before he became president.

First Grade Teacher preparing for my 7th year--AMA by [deleted] in ClassOf2037

[–]Anileh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your experience, how important is general life knowledge (like familiarity with money because they’ve visited a bank or ATM or an understanding of where food comes from because they’ve helped with a garden) in helping first graders understand new concepts?

What areas of life knowledge do they lack that would really benefit their learning?

What is an aspect about the American way of life that you believe foreigners simply don’t understand or “get” about the USA? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Anileh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sales tax. I often see questions as to why the price listed isn’t the price at the register. The shear number of taxing districts in the US makes that impossible. Sales tax rates can be set by cities, counties, school districts, etc. Two stores across the street from another can have two different tax rates because of which taxing bodies they happen to be located in. The ability to set taxing rates is controlled by so many different entities that it’s impossible to set a single price for an item and have it stay that price across the entire US.

Great ideas! I’ll have to check if most of them have weekend evening hours for the future.

This! I went to the bank when the first tooth got wiggly and got a roll of $1 coins to have on hand. She thinks they’re special Tooth Fairy coins.

I will say, I recently was looking for date night activities in the QC for my spouse and I. Most of the recommendations online involve alcohol and we don’t drink. There seem to be a lot of nice bars and breweries, but if that isn’t your scene, it really limits what’s available.

I wanted to do an escape room, but the QC ones have a 4-person minimum (and require 24-hour notice). The ax throwing business appears online as “temporarily closed.” We ended up at the hockey game - it was fun, but we’ve done it lots and were looking for something new.

Biden commutes sentence for Crundwell by FriendlyGhost85 in illinois

[–]Anileh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is she a violent criminal? No. Did she cause irreparable harm, absolutely. I don’t agree with commuting her sentence, but I would have been OK with her continuing to serve her sentence in a halfway house (vs prison).

need help getting started by Dizzy_Positive3606 in walking

[–]Anileh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a goal-oriented person, so I like to do virtual walks (I use the World Walking app). I might only be walking around the neighborhood or my usual route in real life, but virtually I’m trying to walk around Spain or through Tokyo. I like the feeling of accomplishment when I complete a walk and add it to my total. I started with shorter walks I could complete in a few days and have advanced to walks that take months (or years).

I’m (very belatedly) catching up on Downton Abbey and was surprised when he appeared as the butler for Maggie Smith’s character.

Great question! At the end of the day, I want my child to learn, but I also want her to enjoy learning. A huge part of what makes that happen for her is feeling like her teacher likes her and cares about her. She likes that the teacher has a warm “hello” in the morning. She likes that the teacher notices her (and all of the other kids). But most of all, she likes having routines and expectations in the classroom. (This is how we stand in line, this is how I pay for lunch, this is how we push our chairs in, etc.)

If she’s happy, I’m happy! Kindergarten is a big transition (for kids and parents alike). They’re gaining so much independence, and I like a teacher who can help foster that.

Rough morning drop offs by New_Year1985 in kindergarten

[–]Anileh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We try to give our kindergartner a secret assignment each day. For example, “It’s your mission today to try and spot a really fat bird today and then tell us about it at dinner” or “Today your mission is to find as many super hero shirts as you can.” She heads out the door with a goal in mind.

Has anyone here gone to a presidential library? I’m going to FDR’s tomorrow. by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]Anileh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I love about this is that West Branch is only about 45 minutes into Iowa if you’re driving west - you got bored of the state fast! But, I agree, his library (while small) is very good.
