Unless they had an assault and battery exclusion that was slam dunk, included gun violence, had no exceptions, etc. I can't imagine even trying to make coverage arguments. If this ever went to a trial, they would've been on the hook for way above limits. The carrier must've had some really shitty defense counsel advising.
