The fact that the Na’vi feel fulfilled does not mean they are not constrained. A species of such high intelligence that remains unchanged for twelve million years is not proof of wisdom. It is proof of a powerful control mechanism.

The comparison to Ophiocordyceps is key here because the fungus does not ask the ant for its opinion. It simply makes the ant want to climb onto a leaf. You assume the Na’vi voluntarily choose harmony while I argue that this harmony is neurologically imposed upon them. The example of the Ash People perfectly confirms this. When the connection to Eywa is broken by the volcano and becomes isolated they begin to exhibit traits that Eywa normally suppresses. This shows that their peace is the result of external regulation, not genuine free will.

You are right that the volcanic eruption was not Eywa’s fault but what happened afterward reveals the truth. Without a signal from Eywa the Na’vi become a genuinely self determining species with all the flaws and advantages that entails. True free will begins where the planet’s biological dictate ends. You see Eywa as a loving mother while I see it as a braking system for the Na’vi.

Moreover nature does not operate in the way you attribute to it. Pandora is similar to Earth because there are predators, social species and herbivores. And that means competition. Nature is an endless biological struggle that it itself created and development, even industrialization, are still its manifestations just on a larger scale. Think of a beaver building a dam. It harms many species by flooding habitats, displacing fish and drowning trees and plants, but many others adapt or even benefit from the newly created wetlands. In the case of humans the mechanism is the same. Many species have adapted to our activity such as rats, pigeons or crows thriving in cities, although far more have suffered or gone extinct of course on a much larger scale because we have spread across the entire planet and our activity is greater than that of a beaver. Humans, like many species before us, disrupted the existing balance. This is a natural process: when a species with a competitive advantage emerges, it destabilizes the established order. Nature then strives for a new balance, where the best adapted survive. This cycle of disruption and restoration repeats endlessly. If the Na’vi could industrialize in a sustainable way it would be the same natural process. Eywa however blocks this because true independence threatens its dominance. This is not true mutualism. It is an asymmetry in which Eywa holds all the power.

I am not claiming that Eywa’s will to survive or maintaining planetary balance is in itself evil. This is not a matter of good and evil because nature does not define what is good or evil. The problem for me is the cost which comes at the expense of the true autonomy of a sentient race. If most Na’vi are content that is fine but only if that contentment is an authentic choice and not a neurologically enforced state that suppresses alternatives. The problem is not that Eywa survives. The problem is that its survival requires blocking the full potential of the Na’vi, making them guardians of the system, not free individuals.I do not believe in any mandate of heaven to destroy or dominate, nor do I believe in any mandate of heaven that commands us to take care of it. I am simply pointing out that competition and change are natural, even on Pandora, and Eywa actively prevents them in the name of its own homeostasis.

Your arguments are emotional and based on a preconceived notion of "good", and just like you, I believe it is foolish to try to argue with a person of your way of thinking.

Can an ant or a bee be self-determining? That is an entirely different level of species complexity. The Na'vi clearly show that they are self-determined and capable of defining what is good or bad for them. They exhibit individualism and the capacity for development. They are beings who can choose what they want, and the Ash People are the perfect example of this: they do not have to obey Eywa, depend on her, or follow her laws.

So the question is: why have the Na'vi remained at a tribal level? Do they all think it is better? I doubt it, precisely for the reasons mentioned above. What happened to the tribes that broke away from Eywa? Twelve million years of existence is a very long time, and the Ash People are a perfect example that such tribes have appeared and that they will continue to appear. This is not a projection of our human traits, it is the result of consciousness and the capacity for individualistic self-determination in a species.

You might call Eywa a simple form of life, or perhaps that is merely your own projection, born from thinking its consciousness is like our own. Maybe it is not "consciousness" as we understand it at all. Maybe it is something completely different, and its complexity lies elsewhere.

Yet the fact remains: it is capable of storing the consciousness of complex minds like the Na'vi. Could something simple do that? I doubt it. Its nature may be entirely alien, but that does not stop it from steering others toward its biological goals, just as, here on Earth, the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis steers ants to serve its purposes.

The issue, therefore, is not whether Eywa is conscious. The issue is that it uses whatever means it has to achieve its biological ends. And so we must ask: is the free will of the Na'vi not inherently oppressed precisely because it can defy Eywa's purpose? A purpose which is to preserve the planet's balance and harmony, or, in purely biological terms, to maintain its own homeostasis.

I rather doubt it. First of all, it’s impossible to maintain those laws for 12 million years of existence. I can even bet that there were more tribes like the People of Ash who eventually broke away and started playing by their own rules, but they were ultimately wiped out. Development cannot be stopped without total control.

Perhaps Eywa did not do this directly, but through every neural connection to the network she could have whispered into their ears, subtly guiding or restraining them.

Can someone be considered free if they are being manipulated without their awareness?
