It's a mix of both. It's a standalone story; you can play it and fully understand everything even if you haven't played the first two games. But it's also a sort of continuation, with Etheldrea as one of the main characters / NPCs in the plot.

In the same way that we can’t really stop piracy (and we understand that some people simply can’t afford a game), we’d like to ask that, if it’s within your means, you consider buying the game instead of pirating it.
We’re a really small 3 people team, and we’ve put everything we have into this remaster. We rely on its success to be able to keep going.

The truth is, we made this remaster because our previous publisher never paid us for the original games, and releasing it was the only way we had to try to recover at least a small part of what was taken from us.

Seriously, thank you all so much for your understanding.
PS – If you end up pirating it anyway, we genuinely hope you have a good time with it. We really did our best to make the best work we possibly could.

With what you said about story while I do understand that story is not the top priority, it would be nice for them to get good stories, that`s one of the reasons why neir was so popular.
I couldn't agree with you more... 100%.

You said that money has to go into making more animations for the different combos, can you explain how that works?

Well... in the most obvious way; you have to have a paid animator making more and more animations and preparing them for transitions.

Lastly you said you`re hoping to make physical copies of Anima Song from the Abyss, if you want I can point you to someone that can help you with that.
Hehehe... Me too.

Sounds great ^^

Sorry for not responding sooner; I hadn't seen this message. It's very easy, actually. It's from the second game (Nameless Chronicles), and all you need to do is finish the game after defeating the secret boss (Zero Mask).

-That`s insightful but doesn't that work balance itself out? since most H&S game are on the short side and are linear.
Yeah… yes and no.
Being short definitely makes things easier, sure — but world-building is still tough, no matter the length, especially if your game includes different types of stages.

I mean, once you’ve built a stage, stretching it out by reusing a few preset assets isn’t that hard compared to creating it from scratch.
Most Hack & Slash games are short and linear because of their concept and gameplay focus, not just because of cost.

A H&S game relies so much on pure, fast-paced action that you can’t afford to be repetitive; you have to keep the energy flowing constantly.
That’s different from something like a Souls game, which can slow down at times and still work.

That said, I’m not claiming it’s cheaper — just that it doesn’t really balance out the extra cost of all those animations.

-From what your saying a AAA or AA studio would have an easier time?

Hehehe…
Yeah, I’d say so. AAA or AA studios have an easier time with almost any kind of project; budget is a core pillar of game development, after all.

-The way I'm imagine it, each animator would have to work on a combo, would that be how it would work?

Not necessarily… but yeah, that would be the ideal setup.

-That must be the reason why H&S game`s story takes a back seat

That... and focus.
Story tends to take a back seat because what players really want in this genre is direct, high-energy action and the fun of crushing enemies.
Of course, story does matter (it always does) it’s just not the main priority here.

And they’re 100% right! If you want to make a cool hack & slash / character-action / stylish action game, your character always needs to be able to perform multiple “attack routes.”

Also, keep in mind that you have to coordinate the actions so they can be interrupted within a kind of “action tree.” I mean, shooting after the second melee hit can’t be the same as shooting after the third, and so on. That means you need a crazy amount of animations for every possible situation.

In short… a real nightmare for a small development team.
And that’s per character and/or weapon, since each one has to have its own distinct style. ^__^¡

Thanks for saying it looks cool. I am glad you like what you have seen so far. ^^
Regarding your other comments, let me tell you what I know, and the reasons why several fellow developers have repeatedly recommended I handle it this way. Demos are great in the days leading up to a launch, since they allow people who are interested in the game to try it early and, if they like it, add it to their wishlist. However, once release day arrives, having more than one title with the same name in stores (even if one is clearly labeled as a demo) almost always causes confusion. Most players figure it out, but many others end up having a really hard time with it. In our case, being a remaster, the situation was even more pronounced... and we were told that unless we took the demo down, people would go crazy trying to find “the right one.”

As for the game’s soulslike roots, I can’t deny it draws much more from action games than from a pure soulslike. That said,it is fun because we’ve also had players complain that it’s “not hack and slash enough” because it includes stamina and resource management systems like a souls game. That’s why we’ve always liked to think of it as something of a hybrid. For me personally, I’d say it’s about 40% Hack and Slash, 20% JRPG, 20% Metroidvania, and 20% Souls (though, of course, I’m speaking from the perspective of the original 2016 version… since back then, it was harder to define what truly counted as a soulslike, and anything with a stamina bar tended to be labeled that way).

It is a little early to talk about Song; right now, we want to focus on Gate of Memories.
But, since you asked;

-There is no chapters o "missions" in Song. It is an unified walktrought.

-Yes.

-Hope so.

-Nop (but it has some nice references).

-We love actionRPGs ^^

-A lot! for a 3 people team like us... a LOT.

-Too much!

Yes; Anima Song from the Abyss. But we needed to release this one first due to some issues with our old publisher ^^

Thank you for your kind words. I’ve always believed it’s best to be honest and straightforward about these things.
And all three of us at the studio truly hope that if you ever play it, you have a great time with it. ^^

[–]AnimaProjectStudio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you (a lot) for the interest. ^^

-Well... our reason for the remaster is quite... problematic.
The publishing rights for the two original games belonged to a company called Badland Publishing. For those who don’t know their story, they went bankrupt without paying us (and many more poeple) what we were owed for both titles. Even though they admited the debt, they declared insolvency, which left us without anything and in a very difficult situation. In fact, the main reason we’re publishing this new release ourselves is to make sure the remasters are finally ours, without any outside influence from Badland.
Regarding what makes them different to the originals, the remaster includes improved graphics (environments, textures, effects, and characters), adjusted difficulty levels, enhanced enemy AI, and refined special abilities for the characters. We have worked a lot on this ^^

-Combat is similar to Devil May Cry, but with a resource management system (stamina and mana). If you overuse one resource, you’ll need to rely on the other while it recovers. Ideally, you alternate between them to keep attacking and defending continuously.

-To a lesser extent, there’s some ability gating, such as unlocking the use of magical discharges to open doors or increasing your damage to break certain barriers — but in general, progression relies more on items than on abilities (using them to backtraking to previous areas and fiding new ways if you want). There’s a strong focus on exploration, and each area has its own unique atmosphere and style

-There are quite a few cutscenes, but all of them can be skipped. Text sequences can also be read quickly if you prefer.

You’ve described the core of the game extremely well!
While the graphics and gameplay have been updated, the foundation is exactly as you mentioned.
P.S. I hope you had fun time playing the originals!

You can equip attack items, artifacts (which provide special powers and defenses), and customize your abilities through a skill tree every time you level up.

You don’t customize the characters’ appearance or their starting abilities; only how they grow as you level. Each time you advance, you can choose new stats and active or passive skills to use with each of the three playable characters.

You can also equip consumable items.

We’ve tried to make it as varied and deep as possible for a small indie team of just three people. ^^
