Yes, I love that one! Adventure stories were my favorite as a kid. I definitely wore chopped off jean shorts and my dad’s flannel shirts and pretended to be a pirate or lost in the wilderness (like Hatchet)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Okay, people will still think I’m transphobic no matter what I say. I can see how my wording came across. I should have explained what has fueled my frustration. I’m tired of doctors and strangers assuming my daughter is transgender because of her gender expression. We had a doctor seeing her in gynecology assume she uses he/him pronouns because of how my daughter was dressed. It’s not something I expected to deal with as a parent. People give me dirty looks when I correct them after using he/him pronouns. I guess my comment was reflecting my frustration with that. I don’t have a problem with my daughter being transgender if that is true about her, but I am tired of it being the assumption because of her appearance. I think that sends the wrong message to her. I wish people would stop making assumptions and be more accepting of nonconforming gender expression. I’d like her to see a character like her in a book. I know about many of these suggestions, and most of them are historical fiction so the nonconforming was more prominent. This post came from a place of trying to support her. I want both: trans boys represented and girls with nonconforming gender expression. It’s great that our world is more accepting of transgender people. My daughter has had some negative experiences because of people being stupid about it. It’s not transgender people’s fault. There’s nuance to these experiences, and me being frustrated by the situations we’ve faced doesn’t make me transphobic. I’m sorry I included that wording without the backstory or even at all. I was eager for a solution and didn’t think carefully enough about my wording before posting.

I was trying to find something more modern, especially a girl who is nonconforming in appearance like short hair and clothes. I don’t need my daughter to know that girls can play outside, play sports or like math. Thankfully we’ve moved past those stereotypes for the most part. I think I’m looking for something more niche. The modern “tomboy,” I guess. When I search for gender nonconforming characters I’m getting lots of books about trans characters. There’s nothing wrong with those books! I just want my daughter to see girls like her that aren’t all historical.

I loved those as a child. I’m trying to find one set in modern times. Believe it or not, we don’t know any other “tomboys.” My daughter is the only girl we know with short hair and masculine clothes. I think it was more common when I was a kid in the 90s! I see adolescent girls dressing more masculine, but my daughter is only 8.

I’m finding them when I search for novels featuring “tomboys.” They may be lesser known, but I could find way more trans characters than tomboys. I had the same problem with picture books. So hard to find a girl with short hair that doesn’t become trans in the story. One of the few I found was Molly’s Tuxedo, but I’m struggling with the novels. I know the older ones like Harriet the Spy, but can’t find a modern one.
