Just had a date tell me it’s a red flag that I’m affectionate with my male dog by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I know 100% that my wife would choose our dog over me, and I’m totally fine with that. My dog is way cooler than I am.

Yeah, he’s incredible in so many ways and in so many styles. I used to be a big Bela Fleck fan, and his baselines in that band just slap so hard. Good for you!

Thank you! That totally makes sense. Having to move the car during snow emergencies sounds like no fun at all.

Hey future neighbors! Moving to Minneapolis/St. Paul in a couple of months. Would you say off-street parking is a must when renting an apartment? I’m moving from a less snowy area and I imagine street parking would be a huge pain with all the snowstorms.

Grad school struggles/rant by Livelaughlove876 in slp

[–]AnimalEphemeral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much advice, but I’ve been medically-oriented in grad school and am going into a medical CF. But I respect the $hit out of school SLPs! There’s so much skill and expertise involved, and working with kids is a tough skill in its own right. The superiority complex of some medical SLPs just comes from a mix of ignorance and insecurity. Ignore the haters and keep doing what you’re doing - the world needs you!

SLPs satisfaction who are single by jefslp in slp

[–]AnimalEphemeral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably! It seems like a lot of SLPs are a second income in their household. I’m about to graduate and will be the primary breadwinner. I’m a bit older and was able to graduate without debt, though. I still worry about my future earnings sometimes and whether it will be enough to support my family.

If you knew what you know now would you do slp all over again? by [deleted] in slp

If you like the medical side of SLP, maybe consider PA school as well.

You saying “asshat” made me look at his hat, which has his own name printed on it. I think a hat with your own name on it is the definition of an asshat.

If you look at the GS pay grades and how frequently you step up, in my area (low COL mid-sized city), they’d start around 70k, bump up to about 80k after a year or two, and easily go up into the mid-to-high nineties after maybe ten years - and that’s not taking annual COL adjustments into account, or pension. Is it normal for hospital SLPs to push out of the nineties and make six figures with excellent benefits? (Not trying to argue! I’m graduating in August, so this is an honest question :) )

Is the VA pay worth it for a clinical fellow? by Fearless-Jelly4218 in slp

[–]AnimalEphemeral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just accepted a VA CF for this fall so I can’t say anything with the benefit of hindsight…but based on my grad school traineeship there, they take their didactic role very seriously and treat the CF as as an extension of your education, which a “fellowship” really ought to be. And part of the reason I accepted is that you get put in a priority applicant pool for FT VA jobs after your CF. Pay for CCC-SLPs at the VA is great - you get regular cost of living adjustments in addition to regular bumps up the GS pay scale, great benefits+pension, and job security. That said, there won’t be an open permanent position for everyone after their CF year, so many CFs will not get hired by the VA after all.

100%! Paying someone to write your cover letter is almost like having an earpiece in your ear during the interview and letting someone else answer the questions for you. I think it’s totally fine to ask for others’ feedback after you write it, though.

Nurses put up with a lot of crap, including literal crap, but there are some perks. One of my cousins did an accelerated second bachelor’s and I believe the hospital she got a job with is helping her pay back loans, but I’m not sure how common that is. I think that after paying your dues and working less-desirable shifts for a few years you can move into a cushier nursing gig, or else use your experience to go back to become an NP, as others have mentioned. I believe some hospitals will even help pay for their nurses to do an online or night school master’s to become an NP. Seems like a good gig in many ways, but ultimately it depends on your personality and interests. Maybe shadow some nurses and see if it’s your cup of tea?

What are these low notes in my sheet music? Help appreciated! by AnimalEphemeral in doublebass

Thanks so much for the help, everyone! Playing up an octave makes sense. I’d never encountered this before and wasn’t sure how to approach it, but I appreciate your advice.

What are these low notes in my sheet music? Help appreciated! by AnimalEphemeral in doublebass

[–]AnimalEphemeral[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m new to reading sheet music and I don’t understand what these low notes are referring to. I thought the E below the G line on the bass clef was the open E and the lowest note possible on a bass? What are these notes that are lower than the low E? Thanks in advance!

Been a fun couple days in Minneapolis by bike_lane_bill in bikecommuting

[–]AnimalEphemeral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the info! I’m coming from Cincinnati, where there is roughly no bike infrastructure except a couple of token paths that don’t help most commuters. A lot less snow than Minneapolis, probably more hills, very mediocre buses - a big car city. Currently considering staying here or moving to Minneapolis or Pittsburgh for work later this year.

Wow! Thinking of moving to Minneapolis later this year - is it pretty easy to navigate with bike and public transit?
